Hi all,
Not sure if Im in the right forum. Lets say that at the last second I know the position of a card and I do not want to touch the deck(tamariz) I do not want to just say the number. Any ideas how to force any number between 1 and 52. Thanks in advance

This is a very interesting issue in relation to a MD.
The power of a MD is precisely that we do NOT have to use a force in general for choosing a card or a number (location). The moment that the spectator has the slightest suspicion that there is a force in play, destroys immediately the benefit that a MD offers relative to a magician who works with a normal deck. So I would not make use of a (magic) force but rather try to find "the" number by "accident" or improvisation in the nature of "the trick that can"t be explained" by Vernon. For example: the age from someone, a number that is called by someone in an earlier trick, a number that is printed or shows somewhere in the room, the number of characters of his name, the number of spectators at the table, the current time, tha last numbers of a currency bill that is used in a previous trick, etc. etc. |

Hi Waterloophai,
Great wisdom. I find your post to be a brief 'masterclass'. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks for the responce, Its appreciated,
Indeed, Waterloophai, your recommandation demonstrate your experience and wisdom. Also, you made me think and realize something. My routine has a story around it. The deck of cards on the table was my Grandma favorite deck of cards. And I have a story build regarding her joy of playing with this deck of cards. What I realize is that I can't go ask question regarding the spectator and count cards regarding theirs answers because of the storyline But I can make a link with the answers they gave me. Example, Let's say that I know that they have been married for 15 years... I could tell them that the first time my grandma learn that trick , she's been with my grandpa for the same time. So lets count to 15! If not, should I be doing the game of "you have been with him for 15 years and my grandma 45 years so it's a difference of 30, so lets count to 30. I kind of don't like those minus this and minus that to have a new number and stuff. Finally, If I don't find any link with previous discussion with the spectator, I could just tell a good story of the unlucky number my grandma had. And count to that number. Or maybe a letter (on the table since de begining) sign by my grandma with the number (N.Writer) on it where she says that we will find her favorite card. What are your thought? Thanks again

I was thinking today about if there is a way of doing a force where there is a simultaneous secondary (or perhaps primary) aim of giving the spec the impression that the deck has been mixed in the process.
The only thing I came up with was using the demo-ing of Balducci (e.g. pg86 of CC) with a Pheonix deck. In the demo (or demos; CC recommends one or two) you could do the two cuts lengthwise then bookwise (or vice-versa), giving an immediate re-set which looks like it is a random re-assembly. Then when the spec does it, you can re-set using the approach that Scott Cram recommended in Dennis Loomis' Smoke and Mirrors Article Number 15. Admittedly I haven't tried this on a spec. Good idea or terrible idea? |

Good ideas above.
Another possibility, if you can weave it in your story, is to bluff it. For example you could ask your spectator her zodiacal sign, let's suppose she says Virgo. You then state that Virgo's colour is blue, their gemstone Blue Sapphire, ... and their lucky (or zodiacal) number 15 (or whatever number is required). I use this ploy in a routine of mine and it goes well. |

Besides specific numbers, one can force a value range.
A small adjustment can be made after, or multiple outs used. This might seem less than ideal. Yet often times it will get one where they need to go, and keep the spectator feeling that it is completely personal. In some cases the number and deck can stand due to a direct hit or if a specific number isn't required as long as it falls within the forced range. A Book In English also has some interesting treatments on how to arrive at specific areas seemingly only controlled by a group of spectators decisions. Best, Jed |

You could use Harry Anderson's Yard Sale idea where you have a price sticker on the deck and that is the price your grandma paid for the deck of cards and NW the number onto the price sticker?

Phone numbers are also a good one to add to this list...

Using Tamariz' idea of not Hearing well, would help, too. They Name a number and somebody else a Card (you know its possition) and while you ask again about the Card, because you didn't hear (you were talking...) you do the pass. Then you put the deck on the table, go on with your Story and Point out, that you don't touch the deck. Let them Name the Card and the number again and voila - without you touching the deck, there it is...

The patter has to do with synchronicity between free choices and randomness. A deck of cards is 'randomized' by 'shuffling' and placed aside. A spectator then makes a mental free choice of any card they like which they name. Then two dice are used to find a 'random' place in the deck. Standard dice are used but a sharpie is used to convert the six-pips into a 0 by connecting them. So you have two dice with 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. One die is shaken in a closed cup to randomly in a blinded matter choose a ten-place; that is 0 = 0, 1 = 10, 2 = 20, 3 = 30, etc. Then two are put in the cup and shaken to generate the single-place number by adding them together. So, for example, a 4 and a 5 equals 9. Thus you can generate any number from 1 to 60 using dice in this manner. You tell them if we get a number above 52 we will role again (this possibility actually builds credibility in their minds). This takes a lot of words to explain but it takes just a second to explain verbally to the spectator. Miraculously the card at the random number, in the random deck is the card they named! This is very strong for scientists as it appears to be lab-like conditions. In any case, the dice are shaken in a Sure Shot Die Box http://www.funinc.com/sure-shot-die-box-royal/ro00670p/. Yes, a royal product. This allows one to f____ the position number in the manner you desire. |
