Although technically not a coin gaff I posted this in this forum because it would probably be of most interest to coin guys.
I've been waiting for Tango to restock dealers with their poker chip gaffs as these have been out of stock for quite a while.

I got the TUC chip set as well as the expanded shell set. Each gaff comes with 3 matching chips.
These are very nice sets, I was impressed.
You can buy them in either red, blue, or green. I got the green because I am partial to the $25 chips from way back but that's a long story. Smile

They are roughly dollar sized. So if you've been wanting to upsize to a larger size this is a relatively inexpensive option. Or if you get bored with coins at times these make a nice alternative to help keep things fresh. They also allow for presentations with gambling or casino themes. They would even work well as a practice set if you don't want to always practice with your expensive silver gaffs.

They're very well made and everything fits nicely. The 3 matching chips with the shell are also magnetic apparently but that could be a fluke with my set, I'm not sure.
The shell has pretty good edge coverage and is fairly thin walled considering it's a chip and not a metal coin. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality.
Perhaps the only downside (and this is just inherent to the nature of chips) is that the edges aren't a solid color like coins so the chip inside a shell will likely not line up perfectly if that makes sense. But this isn't something a spec would notice IMO. I would have no problem flashing both sides because even with the shell mouth up it still looks pretty deceptive. I'd say even a flash and a half would be fine. Similar to what you would have to do with all but the really high end coin gaffs.

Anyway, for anyone interested I would recommend these sets. A very good value for the price plus you get something new to play with.
They look and feel like genuine casino chips. I like the clink solid silver coins make but I also like the clack that casino chips make so I like these a lot.

A lot of poker chips have a metal piece inside them to make them heavier - I suspect that's why your non-gaffed ones are shimmed (they're attracted to magnets, but don't attract other metal). I'm guessing the shell does not do the same?

While I keep wanting to like poker chips, I prefer the heavier feel of a coin. But it's great to hear these are good quality!

Yeah, I think you're right. I had forgotten about the shims.
Just got the chips yesterday so haven't messed about much with that aspect.
I am certainly not going to abandon my Morgan's but I do like the chips as well (heck of a lot cheaper that's for sure.)
In fact, I just bought some new Morgan gaffs from Marcelo so they're still my first love. Smile

By experimentation many people today will accept a poker chip as "normal" to a setting over a large coin that they have never seen.

I have been planning to see if Mr. Tango can make up a set of six chips from my set so that they match the entire set of playing chips in my home.

When folks are playing games here I already just pick up chips from a pile and do some magic effects like my famous "untouched." These would allow an entire show using "found objects" Smile

the "3 chip set/shell," the TUC and a two-sided one ala C/S - possibly shaved to fit the shell since I doubt it is expanded. I already have PK ring somewhere.

I could write a book on dozens of effects using such a set.

The point is that there may be a better future in poker chips for magic effects than silver coins.

Are the chips the same clay chips that come with the popular poker sets sold today?

Most of the gaffed chip sets being produced use the cheapest, worst looking chips on the market. Well, IMO, Tango finally got it right.
He used chips that are easily recognized as standard poker chips. The sets look quite nice.

I got some today. They are nice, weighted chips of the 11.5 grams variety.

I am checking with Marcello about using the 14 grams ones if supplied by the customer so as to match a large home set.

The shell is not expanded and only fits on shaved chips of the set. Not really a problem even with a "matched set" if one is careful as to switches.

Personally, I would love to have a set of "prepared chips" from my home set of 300 with metal centers.

Possibly three different colors; 4 of each shaved. A Shell for two of the colors plus a two-sided of one and a third color. A TUC of one would be nice but not necessary.
With such a set many popular effects already documented would be possible such as C/S, CSB, 3Fly, Chips though silk and Chips through table.

During a lull in the evening poker game or family Tripoli gathering, a couple of chips are borrowed from the table and an effect or two performed.

Anyone else interested in such a project?

The expanded shell ship fits over any of the chips. The TUC Has a shaved insert.

I received two sets. One is the original size with a special two-sided chip. The other is the marketed 4 chip set with the shell.

The shell does not fit over the original chips. It only fits over those that have been reduced in diameter -- hence, the shell is not expanded and the companion chips have been shaved/trimmed whatever.

It would be great if the gaff shell could be expanded to fit over a regular chip for then it would also fit over a silver dollar.

Since the chip is not metal it cannot be heated and expanded in diameter. "Back when" all coin shells were "non-expanded" and worked OK.

Yes, to call them expanded shells on the packaging is a misnomer.

I didn't realize that. However, the shell does fit over a silver dollar.

You are right -- my bad. That feature could be useful.

I now recall that poker chips are deliberately made larger than a silver dollar so that they won't fit into slot machines and won't mix with metal tokens in a casino.

Thus, the provided trimmed companion chips are the size of dollar and should fit in a metal Exp [

Actually, my new Chip Shell fits over one of my Dollar Exp [ but I had trouble getting it back out).

Perhaps (given the language limitations) Mr. Tango used the term "expanded shell" since it is the same size as a traditional metal Exp [ and not the size of a dollar.

I have not seen the Chip TUC. Is it the same? Can the Shell part fit over a regular TUC or dollar?

Thanks to Nicholas I am now thinking of having a gaff made with a chip on one side and a Morgan on the other (could be fake one)

I have never liked a dollar sized copper coin as introducing too many unknowns, but could do a C/S type effect with chips and Morgans (or IKE)

That way, my Chip Shell and Morgan Shell would both work.

Imagine an effect in which a stack of chips is changed into Morgans one at a time -- or a Morgan apparently changed into a chip to be gifted away (you can get chips with your name on them)

A chip shell will unfortunately not fit over a chip TUC. I had been hoping it would but they are the same size.

Funsway, I love the idea of doing a copper/silver with a poker chip as sometimes it can be difficult to see the difference between copper and silver, so the chip would really pop.
I guess the downside is that the edges would have to be done well so as not to make it too angle sensitive because the same way the colors would pop on the faces (good thing) they could also pop on the edges (bad thing). But some kind of combination Morgan/Poker Chip gaffs could definitely open up some great possibilities.

Marcello made be a double faced chip (red and blue) and it does have an edge problem. This could be solved by making it thinner!

No reason it has to match an actual chip. If the MP gaff (Morgan/Poker) were the same thickness as a Morgan it would work -- and be able to hide in either a Chip or Morgan Shell!

Consider that with an MP and ChipShell of a different color than the MP, plus matching un-gaffed versions of each, you could do most CSB and C/S effects.

For me, the "Morgan" would not have to be a real one for the gaff -- one of those $1.29 Chinese ones would be fine.

But, to work really well the set of gaffs should be from my provided home set.

(the new Super TUC shell will fit over your Chip TUC, methinks) All you would need is a C/S Leaf for your TUC

The chips for http://custommadecasino.com seem to be the same as those used by Tango.

So, an entire matching set can be had for $25-50 bucks but shipping might be terrible.

Customized chips also available

They look more like something you would see in a casino than the kind you can buy at walmart.

Absolutely, but there seems to be a problem to find quality chips made in this way. I tried to find them, but I couldn't find any!
Anybody know were to get them?

I made my own double sided chips using World Series of Poker chips. Just sand down two chips to half their thickness and glue them together. Then color the rims with a black marker. They look great and they're a lot cheaper than purchasing double sided chips, if you can find them.

Tango makes some nice two-colored Chinese coins, and he's very good at responding by email.

I bet if you reached out he'd be willing to make some with poker chips for you.

And now I'm imagining some C/S Poker Chip TUCs - kind of like the US Half/English Penny C/S TUC...
