Dick, those sound like amazing times! I do love strong magic but an entire show of that has no more sculpting and dynamics than an entire show of Ambitious Card moves. I love to entertain and take the audience on a well rounded journey and for the record I would do Mutilated Parasol in a heart beat! I have a fondness for so many classics and love to see how they can fit in and resonate with each group. I loved Don Lawton's style... Billy McComb is an amazing magician as well who did so many humor based effects but could also do really powerful effects as well. It's all about balance. I do love this forum to give us a chance to discuss and hopefully create stimulating discourse. It is true however that the print word frequently can't convey intent like when we would all be sitting around the Pub at the Castle discussing things back in the day.
lol... Bill, I love your quote!IF YOU LIKE IT, DO IT. That is about all I can end up with here at the end of the day. We all have our own opinions and feelings based on our experiences and knowledge but we can only teach what people are ready and able to understand. Rather than pound our heads into a wall out of frustration, you're quote solves everything

Every time I cut the ends from my rope, new ends appear.

Yeah Stanley!
One day in a fit of stupidity, I cut off an end, and it immediately, spontaneously, --and, AUTOMATICALLY, grew a new end! I tried cutting off the other end, and it happened again! I alternated cutting off both ends, and, when the fit subsided, I had a pile of ends on the floor, and no rope! I got another piece of rope, and, this time, I cut off the middle. It didn't grow a new middle! NO! IT GREW TWO NEW ENDS! ---When I do a C&R these days, that's how I start the routine....It's silly, but, it gets a chuckle.

Wow!
I was joking. I never thought of using that in a routine. Good thinking.

Stanly, Learn the George Sands routine Sandsational Rope. That play om words is the first segment of the routine and is brilliantly written and structured!

Where to get the George Sands books on his rope magic.
Alan Sands is George's brother, and he pays tribute to his late brother with this website and new book in his honor. http://alansands.com/george-sands/george-sands-ropes |

I must have heard George use the concept in his lecture at Abbott's GTG, about 25 years ago, and then forgot it! I was the "gopher" for George at that lecture, and we had time to "visit". I will dig out the Ropesational and Sandsational books! --I don't use the routine, but, it's GOOD!

I was doing a ring and rope routine at one point and performed the trick for a relative. I wish you could have seen her reaction to the finger scissors cut the rope part of the effect. For her, that was the most amazing part of the routine. Even though a short piece was in play, to her I was just using one piece of rope and when it was "cut" with my fingers, it blew her mind.

That's the "kind' of person that one would love to have in EVERY audience!
I don't think much of the finger scissors" bit. >>>>>>HERE COMES THE "BUT">>>>>But, if it "plays" for you, DO IT! (You need to realize that, that may not happen again!) W. C. FIELDS, before he was a comedian, was a juggler in vaudeville. He did a talking act. One night, in the middle of the act, something fell back stage. It was a loud noise, and, whatever had fallen, made the "in one" traveler MOVE. Fields paused, glanced into the wings, faced the audience, and simply said, "MICE!" The audience roared with laughter! Later, backstage, he said to the stage manager, "Tomorrow, at that same point in the act, drop something, and shake the curtain!" The next day, the stage manager did as requested. NOTHING! They tried it several more times. It never got the laugh again!

While it may be true that I just got a good reaction once, I would think that the finger scissors part being strong or not depends on how it is routined into the overall presentation. I'm certain it could be poorly placed, because as you say it has not really worked for you. But I believe that if a rope is shown and demonstrated to be one single piece and then "cut" with the fingers, it would go over much better and look more magical.
But I've learned that a magician has to believe in an effect and like it to be able to sell it. It's the reason that I could never perform true mentalism, because I just don't believe in it. By the same token, I can wow adults with my sponge ball routine where others just see it as a kids trick. So to each their own... Quote: On May 6, 2016, Dick Oslund wrote:

To go back to the rope with no ends, Tabary's routine demonstrates a wonderful way to do this and has never failed to get giggles and jaw drops at the same time in my performances over the last several years. It all depends on the order and flow of the routine.
