I recently watched a video with Joshua Jay performing magic on what I think was a news show, he performed the charming Chinese challenge but instead of finishing the routine with the last coin vanishing off the silk ribbon and reappearing in the spectators hand he chose to end the routine with the mid air link.
So my question is do others finish with the mid air link or do you prefer to finish with the last coin appearing in the spectators hand ? |

I pair the moves with a story. A story of how Chinese made their coins with holes so that they could carry them around their waste, and how a thief was trying to get the coins away from me.. so,..

The answer is "yes." The choice is driven by the setting and "what comes next."
There are other options besides these two, of course -- the key being the idea of "ending" or "transitioning."

With that effect I would have thought the settings were perfect for an in the hands finish. I'm not knocking the performance and the mid air link is a great way to end the effect which is why I asked in anyone else closes their routine with the mid air link as it's a lot easier.

I use this often and I always do the "in the hands" finish. I approach this from the point where this is an accidental happening.
Basically I end with saying that I will make the "last" coin pass off the ribbon but instead it vanishes and then appears in the spectators hand. Instead of calling attention to the placing of the coins into the spectators hand I hand them off as if to keep them because I do not need them anymore. One really great point to this is that everyone forgets about it because I focus on the last coin so tightly and I think it actually makes it stronger. I have even had people pass them from hand to hand without noticing that anything has changed. |

Maybe Joshua decided to end his performance with the mid air link just in this case. When I perform this I do the whole routine.

I was using thicker coins and at end of CCC routine had someone say I felt the extra coin when you put it in my hand.
And I do a display of the two I am putting in their hand. But put three in their hand of course. So I went back to the thinner coins.

The last coin appearing in the spectator's hand is a strong effect, but: 1) it's already the finish to most coins across routines; 2) it really has very little to do with the effect of the Charming Chinese Challenge; and 3) the effect of a coin appearing in the spectator's hand is great for a small group, but for a larger group, the impact tends to dissipate over the time it takes for people to realize what happened. There are many fine effects in coin magic that do involve penetration, that are visible to all, and hit every one at the same time. For instance, I use an ending that's based on Gregory Wilson's marketed trick with a dog tag. I'm sure anyone interested can put the two together, but if you'd like to get the details, catch up with me at the Rocky Mountain Session or the Genii Convention this year.

There Joshua does the same routine with mid-air link AND ends with the appearing coin The coins that joshua sells when you buy the routine on Vanishing inc are very thin Not the most beautiful ones but the best for putting in the spectators hands, and good size for audience view |

Drolleric that's why I asked my original question as I had already seen that performance so I was surprised to see him end on the mid air link, in the performance where he ended with the mid air link it was for only two spectators in a close up setting rather than the situation in the clip you kindly provided. My conclusion was that perhaps he finished on the mid air link due to time constraints.
Curtis you make some interesting points as always some of which I hadn't thought about Thanks for everyones input. |

The coins that comes with Lance Pierce's "Recharmed, I'm sure" are more like to real coins, and they're much more conformtable to use among this routine
