Responding in order...
Dick, I wish you would tap out your thoughts. You have seen more change in our art and industry than several of us combined. Ken, I cannot deny that people today and in the future will never have the chance to enjoy things which we can and did. But I will not offer them my regrets. Why? Because they will enjoy things which we will never know. Their world is their own. It comes with both bad and good... no different in that sense than our own. Ray, I think you get it. It was not uncommon to have people ask me in rather sheepish ways, as to not insult me, "What should I call you? Magician does not seem enough. Are you an illusionist... or a prestidigitator...?" I would respond with a smile, "It doesn't matter to me what they call me, as long as they do." Bob, I love the movie, Gran Torino. Clint Eastwood delivers the line, "Get off my lawn" better than just about anyone. Danny, I don't agree with his point either, but I try to validate my thinking. I must say though that you have been rather civil and I appreciate it.

Lol... JNeal, I believe that title has already been appropriated... by force if I remember! We can only aspire to bask in the afterglow of their virtuosity.

Magic is higher than the realm of the physical world we call reality and it is in effect a magician’s job to bring it down to earth.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Have you never heard the phrase "This is where the magic happens"? Its fairly common.

Magic is viewed as good and is used to point out that the thing happening is also good. It's not to be taken literally and has no bearing on the public perception of what we as magician do. Plus, if a person does get their view of magic from a mayo commercial, and therefore expects a magician to do something as mundane as cook bread, wouldn't that lead to a more amazed reaction? "Man, I thought mayonnaise was magical, but this is the real deal!"

When one does not entertain well an excuse is needed for the poor reaction. This fits nicely.

TOP DEFINITION
this is where the magic happens This is my bedroom. I do sex here. I am good at sex. Phrase popularised by MTV celebrity show "Cribs" where celebrities show a camera crew round their house or apartment. It became customary for the "celebrity" to use this phrase when leading the crew into the main bedroom. Used in the same way by people in their own non-celebrity homes or ironically in other contexts Over there is the toilet, that's my Mom's room and here, this is where the magic happens. Sorry about the smell http://www.urbandictionary.com/

"The Magic of Tahiti", "The Magic of Dove Soap" etc. I could easily decry the public abasement of our art through the misuse of the word magic. The reality is that if it didn't have still retain such mystery and romance, why would they want to use it so badly?

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but this sandwich looks a lot better than most magic tricks I've seen.

Actually, I can create the expectation of an event and resulting astonishment - whether or not it is magic is up to the observer's experience and expectation. Yet, the observer can be instructed as to what is impossible and what magic looks like. Such instruction may be the future of performance magic. I offer no "argument" - just an opinion that the dilution of magic away from the concept of "impossible" makes it more difficult to create the long term memory of "must have been magic." Yes, I can do tricks for entertainment and scientific demonstrations of exciting things and puzzles to confound -- but they are not necessarily magic. It seems that most here feel that magic is what magicians do or what advertises claim it is. As I asked before, what word do I then use in a discussion of phenomenology? Saying, "there is no low as this is now standard" hardly speaks well of the future of performance magic. If there is no astonishment, no sense of awe, no affect and no art, then anyone can perform anything they wish and call it magic. And I guess they do.

Is the new standard of what is good magic just to be better than the terrible stuff on YouTube, or more appealing than a sandwich? I have no problem with this ad you posted - magic not mentioned even once. It details how to make a superior looking sandwich. Hoozah! Nothing astonishing, though, as anyone can do it. It will be amazing perhaps is folks feel you must use Best Foods/Hellmans mayonnaise for the result.
