Guys,
My wife Belly Dances and sometimes with a troupe (3 girls). I help them with sound and lights. I want to add projections of different backgrounds to their performance. Does anyone care to share their setup of a portable projection screens or some advice. Looking to be able to back project and front project. Also it must also cover up to the ground, full body. Light weight if possible, portable and cost effective. Thanks, GR

Fast Fold Da-Lite screens still seem to be the standard in the industry. I have a few 9' x 12' units. One FP, 1 RP although they do make a duel surface that might be the best for your situation.

Ray,
Yeah, that will definitely work. The cost will be an issue with them. Do you know of a DYI system?

Not that will be as practical or as good.... but if you want to make a DIY system, sew an 8' by 11' (or whatever size you want) piece of china silk, then sew some sort of heavy border on the edges. Mount heavy duty grommets every 6" on the reinforced border. Get four 1 1/4" speedrail elbows, and two 9' lengths of 1 1/4" OD Alum Tubing and two 12' pieces. Assemble them into a 9' x 12' frame using the elbows, then lash the screen to the frame. Yes, the frame will bow in some in the centers of each side but the lashing allows you to even out the pressure assuring even tension on the screen. You will be able to front and rear project on it. You will not get the transmission you will from a da-lite dual surface screen, but you'll get something. You can even try ordering a replacement screen with grommets from Da-Lite. just do your research and see where you're willing to draw the line on cost.

Ray,
I scored a Da-Lite 9 X 12 on Craig's for $300, includes the dress kit. The screen is good, but the case and frame have seen better days. But they work. Will use the DIY for a smaller screen size. Thanks for your help.

That's a GREAT deal... especially with the dress kit!

Ray,
What would you use to tie the Da-lite down for outdoor shows under slight windy conditions??

I am looking for a low cost solution for a projection screen to do CGI magic similar to that done by Hara. He was on America's Got Talent.
It is a rear projection screen but becomes invisible when the lights go low and the stage lights are overhead. Pretty High-Tech stuff...
May the FORCE be with you and have a magical day!

Da-Lite 9 X 12 used.
Or two used 9 ft trusses. 9X12- 4 way stretch rear spandex lycra. Buy samples till you find one that you like and then find a local supplier. Sow in your own channels and grommets.

This rear projection screen with stand is amazing. It's raised up 2' and is 5' by 9' which gives a 10' diagonal. Sets up in less than 5 minutes. My projector goes behind it about 11' and it fills the screen.
