For fans of the 3 shell game, Pop Hadyn has just released a new video on the way he presents the shell game for a magic audience: Pop Hadyn's Exhibition Shell Game.
Video features some excellent discussion about the differences inherent in performing the shell game on the street vs in a magic performance. Pop tips his full Exhibition routine and offers a lot of very interesting theory on how to create a magical presentation for the shell game. Basically its a quick (whole video is just over 70 minutes) master class in routining and presentation with the added bonus of some nice work on the 3 shell game (The Hadyn turnover in particular is a great move that I had never encountered before). Definitely recommended for magicians looking to add a performance of the shell game into their repertoire. Available as both a DVD and a Video Download. |

Is this the same routine that is covered in the other shell game DVDs that were previously put out by School for Scoundrels, or is the routine and material new?

As always, I am very (and in this case, VERY) late to the game. But, better late than never...and this production is DEFINITELY better! Wow, this is has to be one the finest instructional videos I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Doc's teaching of the routine, and the moves necessary to perform the routine are just terrific. His thoughts on why the routine is structured as it is are invaluable. I've been performing the three shell game for years using plastic shells. This video has inspired me to purchase the School For Scoundrels metal (I got the gold ones) shells, and take my game to the next level. Can't thank 'Pop' enough for releasing this!

Well, I've been 'working' with the Golden Shells for almost two weeks now, and I'm not having much luck with them. Just can't seem to get a sufficiently secure grip on them to do the moves. As suggested by Whit, I've washed them with soap, but still no luck. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Being a diabetic, I have extremely dry hands and share your exasperation with getting a good grip on the shells, especially metal shells. Al Lamfers at 3Shells.com called "Clip and Grip" that helps in getting a secure grip on the shell and reduce slippage without being overly sticky.
Constant practice also helps. When I first started with the shells, I would constantly practice stealing, loading, lifting. When I started with the shells (SFS Golden Shells) they were always scooting out from my fingers or I couldn't lift them smoothly. They were just too heavy for me as a 3 shell novice. I purchased a set of SFS Street Shells and started working with them. The reduced weight helped me a lot in controlling the shells. I believe this helped develop the fine motor skills and hand/finer muscles used in the shell game. After a couple of months I started back with the golden shells and could control them better. The main thing is do not give up! I am sure others will chime in and give you more suggestions. |

Rosariorose9:
I noticed in your post that you do have experience with the shell game using plastic shells, but not the maker. Starting with the SFS Street Shells may still help, since I think both the Street Shells and the Golden Shells were based on the same molds. |

Thank you, LeoH! Your description of your problems handling the Golden shells describes my problems exactly - too heavy, and too slippery. The plastic shells I had been using were the Vernet's. Am thinking of getting the SFS Street shells. Since you have had both th Goldens and the Street shells, may I ask you how the grip is on the Street shells? I've tried the La Maggiore's. GREAT grip, but a little too big for my hands...

Too late to edit my post, but wanted to add that the La Maggiore shells are too big to use for the shot glass finale (which I use).

The SFS Street Shells and the SFS Golden Shells are made with the same molds, so they are the same length, height, and width. The difference is the materials each are made and the weight. I have a set of the La Maggiore shells, too, but found working with the SFS Street shells helped me best with working with the Golden Shells because my contact points were the same for each shell.

Thanks so much, Leo! I assume from your answer that the grip (texture) on the Street Shells is 'better' than on the Golden Shells, since the Street Shells are not made of shiny metal...so I'll give them a try!

BTW, Pop's "Exhibition Shell Game" is a masterpiece!

I agree! His teaching is superb. By the way, I would KILL for shells with the texture of the La Maggiore's, but in the size of the SFS shells...

Rosariorose: With my metal shells, I also wash them again if I am practicing/using them a lot in order to wash any oils or dirt that may have rubbed of my hands and transferred to the shells.

I think the metal shells may be harder to master than the motorcycle! I started the latter with a Honda 50 in college, and then rather quickly realized how dangerous that under powered bike was...at which point I 'upgraded' to a Triumph Bonneville 650. Only laid it down once in four years

By the way, I ordered the Street Shells. Will, as you suggested, see if I they can help me transition to the Goldens. Should arrive this week. Also ordered 'Clip & Grip'. Al Lamfers (owner of 3shells.com?) sent me a nice note confirming my order. Thanks again for your help.

We are lucky to have good guys like Pop and Chef Anton with SFS and Al at 3 Shells. All are wonderful merchants, and have offered me great customer service.
A suggestion on the Clip and Grip: Grip the shells and observe which areas on the fingers are coming into contact with the shell. These contact points are where you need the clip and grip, and use the clip and grip as sparingly as possible. It should not take much. Good Luck! |

Just received the SFS Street Shells, and have started working with them. I really, really like them. Perfect size (as you said, same size as the Golden Shells) and pretty good 'texture' - not quite as good as the La Maggiore's, but infinitely better than the Vernet's. Waiting for delivery of the Clip and Grip, and will follow your suggestions using it. Can't thank you enough for your guidance through this process!
