Now that's a tough one to solve with so very little to go on...it could be "Shave and a Haircut" but then again with only your description it could be anything.

Did the best I could.
I you ever heard it you would know what I'm writing about. Make sense to me. Shave and a Haircut is one less Da.

In another lifetime I was music manager for a large multi-media chain. Nine out of 10 times I could identify what the staff and customers asked of me (as long as it fell in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.) But there were many who came to me and said, "It has the word 'love' in it."

Shave and A Haircut Two Bits sounds right to me. Give it a listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUaMyl9flps and see if this is the tune you seek.

That sounds like the intro to "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors... not originally theirs.. a snippet of a melody used in many songs and cartoons, etc that want to set a stereotypical Chinese tone. Or, I could be completely wrong... chords are G-G-G-G-F-F-D-D-F
IF that's what you're looking for, a better youtube example is here: https://youtu.be/zJJ8zbdVIiI You can buy a much more elaborate production of this short theme here : https://audiojungle.net/item/chinese-riff-with-gong/2903115 |

There is a variation of this same tune on freeSFX.co.uk which you can download for free. http://www.freesfx.co.uk/rx2/mp3s/5/17744_1462211975.mp3 Their site titles the tune as Sum Yung Guy. I found it on this page of their website: http://www.freesfx.co.uk/soundeffects/world-music/

I know Eggsactly what song you mean, Neznarf! :0 It its the tune that became famous back in the late 60's, where the guy humming it would hold up one finger on each hand (ie. his index), proceed to know his closed fists together (still with the single finger extended on each hand, then "magically" then finger on the left hand would "magically" transfer over to the right hand causing the right hand to "mysteriously" have two fingers! :0 He then would proceed to continue humming the same song while continuing with a multitude of hand finger manipulation/transference variations. I also am quite certain that back about 6 years ago, this gentleman that created this comedy piece, was alive and living in Copenhagen, as my friend who also lived in Copenhagen was in regular communication with him. I cannot recall his name, nor the name of the song, unfortunately. Perhaps a search on youtube of this comedy skit will turn it up. I seem to recall he performed it on shows such as: The Smothers Brothers, Laugh in and perhaps even on the Red-Skeltoon hour. Hope these tidbits of extra info help you to locate it. Let us know, if you do. Jonathan

I seem to have found an old "fuzzy" clip of this comedy routine with the performer (and I believe the originator) of this skit and song, Art Metrano. Let me know if this is the tune you were looking for Neznarf... or not.
IN any case, I hope that you and other Café members will enjoy seeing this skit, once more, after so many years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-SNrvHdZJE

Voila! As played by the amazing and legendary Jazz musician, Chet Baker! Wonder if he composed it l, as well? Great work Stempleton!
Now we just need to hear back from Neznarf, if my hunch about the song he was in search for was correct....

Art Metrano was his name. I never knew his name but me and my buddies when we were kids were doing this all over the place.
I laughed really hard watching the youtube clip. Made my day. I put it on FB to see what comments I get. You guys went off track and found the stuff I already found but thanks anyway. BTW I found the perfect MP3 for free so I downloaded it and it won't play. I'll keep looking.

Nez -
Did you find that ancient venerable song called, "Chinatown My Chinatown", which is what I believe you were originally looking for?
