I also noticed something in the "Drake" portion (with the frogs)
At one point when a frog gets loose and the camera pans down while he retrieves it. The table is covered with a deck of cards torn in half. I would be willing to bet he performed Rick Lax's "Binary Code 2" just before he led up to the frog stunt. Why not show a nice effect like that on tv? (This leads back to why I liked his first two specials). He did things that any decent magician could do without the use of camera trickery and a production crew. I really would have liked to see that effect performed (assuming that is why most of a deck of cards was ripped in that fashion).

I usually like David Blaine, but I was pretty unimpressed by this whole show. The trips to the dentist, doctor's office, and training with the sword swallower took up way to much air time. Also, part of the reason I loved Blaine was that he would take tricks (wont name them here), and do them to regular folks. The trick I was referring to was one he did in an earlier special and changed the one dollar to hundred dollar bills and actually handed them out for keeps (something I wish I could afford to do lol).
But to me, David amazing the people on the street was entertaining. Actors and actresses, the media is so saturated with them that I am honestly not interested in seeing them that much. Only trick that I liked was the Jennifer Lawrence one, but pretty sure that was prepped. |

After his opener I was really excited to see more, the content was great just not enough of it imo. Little too much on his bullet catch, would have liked to see more card tricks with the celebs.

Yep, the effect he did on Ellen looks like a version (at least the same method) as Binary Code 2. It certainly was a different handling though.

Anyone have a list of all the consultants and advisers for the show?
It went by so fast I couldn't catch it even on pause since Spectrum / Time Warner blocks out the bottom of the screen during pause. I think a lot of it was editing and/or PSW. Some of it was simply impossible, but... Personally, I thought this was a pretty great special. But, as some have said, I liked the magic more than the stunts and geek stuff. The ACAAN with Jennifer Lawrence was amazing. I know the method must be disappointing, but I would love to know. Loved the card catches (no palming?!?) and the iPhone trick where the spectators sprung the cards at the phone and the selection stuck. The phone "book test" was good. Obviously PSW was involved (?) but still great. MOABT or the latest Steve Dela book test on an iPhone? Now... is any of this going to be for sale in the next few days like past Blaine specials or is it all unmarketable? Robert |

Even the ring / hangar trick, showing it to just one celebrity would have been enough instead of everyone who gave him a ring. Stick to card magic and forget the geek magic and you will get more magician followers.
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

While David is good for magic, just way too much editing and in fact all his specials seem to have had camera trickery. Why resort to such chicanery when there are so many good magicians and mentalists.

Did anyone catch if David is given a producer credit? The reason I am asking is because I wonder, given the format of his previous specials, how much footage they had that never made it on the show, mostly because the producers want it to be seen a certain way and capture a certain audience. Remember, this is not produced to capture the magic crowd. It is produced for entertainment, ratings and laymen.

The catching selected card effect he did in the special looks interesting and clean.

I'm normally not a huge fan of David Blaine but I found that to be incredibly cool. I think that special was really great for magic, continuing to bring it back into the center of public focus.

I have been a Blaine fan since the beginning. Even being criticised ON HERE for arguing he was great magician, and being notified by another member of a Café-wide e-mail shaming me for being a 'Blaine-iac' and having a photo of me and him as my avatar for a while. Seriously no joke!
But, while I wouldn't say I was disappointed by this special. To me it felt like half a special. Definitely something missing, which as many said, was more actual magic. Maybe Blaine is moving away from this as now there are so many 'clones' now. He wants to separate himself, show what he does is 'for real' not stooges or editing. While some of the mentalism segments may have been 'trimmed' down, remember a 10 minute mind reading effect would seem to drag on forever on TV. I think we should view all the magic he did promoting it on talkshows etc as the missing pieces. |

Usually I hate stunts as magic, but that bullet catch was very intriguing. Many mixed feelings about it.

The ACAAN with Jennifer Lawrence looks exactly like Peter Turner's ACAAN that he did for Morgan Streibler over Webcam.
Pete, Did you consult with David on that piece?
Find out what you cannot do.., Then go and do it!
