Wonderfully made and very clever gimmick. The DVD explaining and crediting was cool too.
The first effect in the video it not the best use of the thing and I guess they put it on the teaser because its appealing visual aspect. IMHO the best use of the thing is an offbeat (as it is explained by in the DVD). The effect is potentially very strong and appealing but it is up to the performer to make it so. If you have a card selected and signed and right away approach the deck to the tie to display that the card is impaled in the tie tack it will most likely feel as a trick, with no meaning leaving no magical feeling whatsoever. I will customize it to convert it in a pin since I didn’t even know what a tie tack it. I intend to customize it as a pin from my “magic society”. I see it much more as a strolling magic piece. I would present it like this. - After a magic opener I proudly announce to my audience that my magic society accepted me back after that shameful incident that I won’t comment why further. (how would I that was a wig??!), then I produce the pin from my pocket. - I say they gave me back the “magic pin” for people to see I am worthy magician (which I think it funny because it is true in many magic societies) I hand out the pin for a closer look as I comment that is manufactured in China and only a few thousands of magicians are allowed to wear it. I put in in my lapel in a little ceremony and they all clap and make noise. I throw confetti at the end of it. - So I have a card selected and signed and I perform a perverse version of the ambitious card routine. I intend to lose the card in the center to begin the trick but I am unable to do so all the time (the card rises to the top/bottom). I never “start” the trick. - Desperate, I will spring the deck to the ground and I say I am not worthy of the pin. The selected card appears impaled in the pin but don't care. In tears I remove the pin from my lapel and hand out the impaled card as I apologize and I put the pin back in my pocket. Alternative ending (card on the ceiling) Best Pipo |

I'm very interested in this effect. One question, if I may. Do you need an additional piece to perform the penetration effect ? Put it otherwise, before you do the penetration, can you show that your hands are only holding the cards and there is nothing in your hands ? And are the cards (notably the signed one) examinable ? Thanks.

Cards are examinable - your hands are not
Title: The Gold Standard Creator: David Regal Publisher: self published MSRP: $ 56 Skill Level: DVD Run time: 27 minutes Type of effect: Signed card appearing to a tie tack Manufacturer's Write Up: What is The Gold Standard? It is an 18k gold-plated tie tack or lapel pin that does something special with great economy: a card is returned to the deck, and an instant later it is seen impaled on your tie tack. You can pull on the card, and spin it on the post. Best of all, when you remove the card from the tie tack, there is a hole in the card! The card can be signed. The effect can be performed at any time in your act, with a deck in play. And it doesn't have to be a playing card. The Gold Standard can just as easily cause a signed bill to become impaled, or a business card - imagine handing out your card only to discover it pierced by your tie tack. When you remove the card, there's a hole running through it. You can then give that potential customer your business information with a permanent reminder of the effect he just witnessed. How accurate is the ad copy? this is exactly what happens What's in the box? Gold standard gimmick and the DVD Key points: This is an elegant quality prop, custom designed from the ground up, with attention to detail. If you don’t wear a tie – this could be a gold pin on a lapel. How are the production values: Mr. Regal is standing at a card table in front of a red curtain. He does appear to have a live camera person, but maybe not a lapel mic. His voice sounds a little echoey. At one time he says that they we are shooting in his “living room” and in fact he’s probably in a live theatre (like the Magic Castle) and the ambient noise could be an adjacent theatre. Mr. Regal does a few “pick up” shots outside – and again, you hear ambient noise of birds and wind in the camera’s mic. Is it well made: Looks like brass, but is made from stainless steel. Treated well, it should last you a lifetime. Is it well taught: Mr. Regal performs this for a live audience in a parlor setting. He goes over multiple phases and endings for the card to tie routine. Mr. Regal also gives full credit for inspiration as well as credits to previous talent who have created similar effects. Storage? Does it "pack flat?" Wears easily on your tie and the gimmick can easily be hidden in a finger palm. Does it "play big?" I’d say any effect that David Regal uses in his own performance – is good enough for you and me. Difficulty / Skill level required: A well versed magician with an intermediate level of card skill will have no trouble with this routine. How much arts and crafts are involved? None – everything is built for you. How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Absolutely, and I think this would work great for corporate and restaurant magic – where many magicians typically we a tie. Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand. __X__ Very Satisfied _____ Somewhat Satisfied _____ Neither Satisfied or Dissatisfied _____ Somewhat Dissatisfied _____ Very Dissatisfied _____ No Opinion My thoughts David Regal is magic royalty and pretty much anything he puts his name on is going to be “gold.” + Hey do you want to see my full review with even more of my opinions and ideas? Thanks for the review. No problem if I have to finger palm the gimmick. I don't wear a tie, and I never will, but I'm certain, given Regal's video, that you can have the tie tack attached almost anywhere you want. Ali Nouira did a review recently, and he said you can have the tie tack attached on your back, which is pretty cool. Personally, I'm thinking about attaching it at the level of my waist. I guess I will have to ask Regal himself if it's doable or not.

@davidpaul$ it's 56 on Penguin
@mh1001 it's a working tie tack - so where ever you can place a tie tack you can place this item. You can wear it as a lapel pin on your jacket. |

Pipo -
I just saw your post - what a lovely routine! Mh1001 - As for hands being empty, the gimmick starts out in a pocket and can be gotten hold of mid-trick, after the selection. A subtlety of the gimmick is that it "marries" itself to the selection in the action of a second or two, and that fact allows for very clean handling, and empty hands. It's a nice thing, and when I explain it to magicians who think they understand the entirety of what's going on (the trick is based on a known principle) they all go "Ohhhhhhh..." That Penguin price of $56 is very low, but I will match it if you drop me an email at david@davidregal.com and you mention the Magic Café. |

I love Pipo's idea too! This is a really well made and thought out prop. I do share some of the hesitation about using a tie pin (that's what we call them in the UK!) - but think the lapel idea easily gets round this. Perhaps another version could be produced that looks more like a lapel badge? I've done a full review here: http://www.bicycle-cards.co.uk/2017/05/2......-review/
