Hi guys,
What is the name of the effect Blaine used on Jimmy Fallon recently? The trick I'm referring to is the 'Now count how many cards you have routine' - where he got the guy to hold the cards against his chest. Thanks James |

The original effect is Las Vegas Leaper, which is found in the books by Pau Harris: "Las Vegas Close-Up" or "Art of Astonishment 1" (a series worth reading, btw). AoA's 3 volumes have 3 different versions of this effect, and there are plenty others that have added on to it or used the main principles. Blaine's handling however is different from the original in significant ways. This segment renewed my use of this effect, and I have to say - it really is a great one!

The one in card college doesn't have the vomiting up a frog kicker though.

Not to be confused with the blackjack dealer with bad skin known as the Las Vegas Leper.

This is one of those tricks that often is forgotten, but very very powerful. It is something I started doing many years ago, but it is my wife's favorite trick I do. I almost got kicked out of Hooter's restaurant for performing this trick!

Just for a little historical grounding:
Cards Across (or Thirty Card Trick, The Flying Cards, The Ten-and-Ten Card Trick, Passe Passe Cards) is a classic plot in card magic wherein an amount of cards disappears from one pile (of cards) and reappears in a second pile. Typically, this is performed with 2 volunteers, each of which holds a pile. Performers known for this effect: Leipzig, Paul Le Paul, Al Baker, Howie Schwarzman, Derek Dingle. Some publications: - "The Multiplication of Cards while in a Spectator's Hands" by J.N. Ponsin in Nouvelle Magie Blanche Dévoilée (1853) - "Mene, Tekel, Upharsin" by Robert-Houdin in Les Secrets de la prestidigitation et de la magie (Secrets of Conjuring and Magic) (1868), translated by Professor Hoffmann in 1878 - "To pass several cards from one person's pocket to that of another" attributed to Mdlle Patrice in The Modern Conjurer by C. Lang Neil (1903) - Thirty Card Trick in Cyclopedia of Magic by Henry Hay (1949) - Thirty Card Trick in Amateur Magician's Handbook by Henry Hay (1950) https://www.geniimagazine.com/magicpedia/Cards_Across Paul Hallas has written a 100+ page book surveying various people's approaches to Cards Across. There is a new print edition of this book available here: http://www.thebookpatch.com/BookStoreRes......dl=title It's a 'classic' effect for a reason. Devant's "Three Cards Across" version is even good for restaurant workers and older kids. I know I've used it that way myself. |

Almost everything in the Paul Harris books is outstanding! Las Vegas Leaper stands out as being not only amazing, commercial magic... but also so easy to perform.

What is the Cards Across version in Vol 2 of Art of Astonishment? I see Las Vegas Leaper and Big Time Las Vegas Leaper in 1 and 3, but I don't know the name of the version in vol 2.

Those two, and then the one right after Las Vegas Leaper in book 1, called Leap of Faith by Bill Malone. That's the third one. Also, Darwin Ortiz had a nice idea of using red/black cards with Bill Malone's idea in Leap of Faith. Darwin's is called Triple Cross and can be found in Scams & Fantasies, I believe.

Blaine's performance of the effect was superb. I really enjoyed it.
The performance is worth studying as much as the effect. |

Does anyone know the name of the first trick David does, where he has Jimmy take out 5 cards? Here's the video for reference:
