As the old hustler said ‘If one of them would once fall in love with me, then I would really take advantage of him.’
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

VOGON CAPTAIN: So, what you're saying, is that I write poetry because, under my cold heartless exterior, I really want to be loved? Is that it?
ARTHUR DENT: Well, yes. Don't we all? Deep down inside. VOGON CAPTAIN: No. You've got it all wrong. I write poetry to bring my cold heartless exterior into sharp relief! I'm going to throw you off the ship anyway!

I want my audience to love me because of a mix of: I'm an egoist; I'm insecure; adoration is power; it feels good to be loved.

The audience will assume that the magician is looking for approval, and put themselves in the role of your judges, if you don't dispel the idea that you are there to show them "how good you are" or to "win their love or approval" from the beginning. You need to love your AUDIENCE, and let them know you are there to give THEM something: You are going to pull their legs, tickle their thoughts, scare the bejesus out of them, make them laugh, show them something amazing, etc. etc. When you scare them, they will applaud with real applause--because you did what you set out to do and gave them a scare! When you amaze them, they will applaud with real applause--because you caused amazement. You need to know why you are in front of THIS audience and what you are trying to GIVE them in order to succeed as a performer, much more so as an artist. Winning the love of an audience comes from connecting with them on an intellectual and emotional level, and giving them something of value. You want them to understand why you love magic so much. You win their love not by impressing them, but by sharing with them the experience of magic that has meant so much to you--by creating a wonderful magical experience for them. I don't want my audience to love ME. I want them to love the beautiful present of the art I make and bring to them. I connect with them by helping them to love the experience of magic. "Isn't magic wonderful?" rather than "Aren't I wonderful?" |

I am there with an audience I owe a debt to. They have graciously concented to spend their money and more importantly their time with me. I OWE them something big.
I want to communicate to them why what I am doing means something to me. I want them to appreciate it as much as I do. I appreciate them even being in the room more than can be expressed. I do not want desire or need to have 5hem love me. It may end up being a byproduct, but not the goal.
