Dick.
How did you manage that? I want whatever you're drinking. Give me a double. OK I think it's time to ask my all time favorite questions for people who've been there and done that. 1. What inspired you to be a magician full time? (Fill in) could be your mentor or a job that turned the key. 2. What's the strangest thing that's ever happened I you? (Fill in the top event please) could be a happenstance or unexpected result. 3. What's the most dangerous thing you ever encountered? (Fill in with one answer) agents don't count. ----------- I know that its a tough decision just to select one but were looking for the ultimate dangerous, strange & motivating events). Ok a 4th (if this if possible) What's the most live-changing event you caused to a single person who now thinks you have real powers. (You could have explained that you only perform physical tricks but they're not believing it, they think you have real power). (Fill in)

Dick usually takes a few days to think-through answers to questions so I'm just assuming his response will be epic.

On Dec 6, 2016, jay leslie wrote: Hi Jay! Well, I became a part time pro'. at 14 (October, 1945). I had done a couple little shows. One, for my dad's lodge, and, that led to a booking for a church group. I made 3.00 for each of them! Thus inspired and motivated, I had the chutzpah (didn't even know that word, then!)to approach the principal of the Junior High School, where I had first seen Stanley Susan present his magic show in 1938, when I was about 6. The principal was a nice guy, and set me for an assembly show! (Admission: ten cents!) In about 35 minutes, I made $25.! I became a part time professional that day! All through high school, I was getting $15.00 shows for a 30 minute program. My buddies were bagging groceries for 50--75 cents an hour. In '51, I joined the Navy. In Norfolk, VA, I got an agent (well, actually a "vest pocket agent"!) He got me enough work, that I could send my Navy pay check home to the bank. I lived on the show money. After the Navy, I did shows throughout my college days. TV had "arrived", club dates were scarce. I spent a few years, working for the Boy Scouts as a District Executive, and, did club dates on the side. My mentors, as a youth, were school assembly professionals (C. Thomas Magrum, Roy Mayer, Stuart Ross). I discussed the possibilities with them, auditioned for a school assembly "bureau", was offered a contract, and, for the next 50 years, I was never out of work. I didn't need to ask for a tour. The managers called me! 2. I just wrote a 400 page (8 1/2 x 11) book, FULL of anecdotes! I've thought about it, and, there have been so many "strange" things, that I just can't single out ONE! 3. I honestly can't think of any "dangerous" things! 4. In the early '70s, I had started booking some colleges. I was experimenting with doing some mental stuff, in the high school program. It was playing well. So, I tried it in the college program. A student walked up, after I had just gotten a standing ovation, and complimented me on the "magic". Then, he followed up the compliment with, "I regard that mental magic as a 'religious experience'!" I dropped the mental stuff!!! Hope this gives you a little idea of a lifetime playing the "knowledge boxes on the kerosine lamp circuit!"

Of course back then, you could get a nice motel for $5.00, a ham and egg breakfast, with toast and, coffee, for $1.00, and, gas was less than 15 cents!
