Bonjour
I have been thinking a lot about this competition over the last few months. About how to improve it? In analysing the results of 2015 and 2016 it is clear that there is a group of creators which cluster around the top places. Is it fair that these creators don’t receive special recognition? You can also see some creators were selected for many of their effects but their total number of votes per effect is therefore low. Is it fair that they also are not recognised? There has been a lot of discussion between Prof BC and I about how to improve the system. As I said earlier, the system can always evolve. The only idea behind improving the system is to encourage, to stimulate as well as recognise amazing bizarre creations every year. Firstly, I would like to insist that an effect on the final list of your best top 5 effects purchased in the year is already a great kudos when you realise the quantity of bizarre effects on the market. Many members told me that maintaining this final list is very useful. Secondly, we decided to create two new Prizes in addition to the first prize (Trophy): the Légion d’horreur and the Paw d’horreur. The Légion d’horreur is a medallion designed by Prof BC, which references La légion d’honneur, which is the highest decoration in France. I will leave Prof BC to explain the background to this medallion and its symbols ….I saw the first draft, you are going to love it. The Paw d’horreur is an original kangaroo paw holding some Emu feathers. Neither kangaroos nor emus can walk backwards, and this prize will symbolise the author moving successfully forward. So how does it work? 1. Winning effect = Trophy (a tie is possible from year to year, and multiple trophies can be awarded if needed) 2. Top 3 vote-winning effects = Légion d’horreur (medallion and certificate) 3. 4th vote-winning effect = Paw d'horreur (paw and certificate) We will also give the Légion d’horreur to any creator who earns as many (or more) votes as the 3rd-place winning effect. Every prices will come with a personalized certificate with the name of their effect. In conclusion, here the prize for the 2015 and 2016 competition: 2015 Bizarre Effect of the Year = Trophy Spectre (Prof BC) 2015 Légion d’horreur = Spirit glass (Adrian Deery), More Gh*st (Prof BC) 2015 Paw d'horreur = Witch Hazel (Steve Peebles) 2016 Bizarre Effect of the Year The Faerie Shilling (Prof BC) 2016 Légion d’horreur = Pearls of the Passed (Evil Eye Workshop) , The Roxanne Effect (Brynmore) Prof BC (for the total of votes), Gemini Artifacts (for the total of votes), Darkness (for the total of votes) 2016 Paw d'horreur = Vade Retro Satana (Gemini Artefacts) Obviously, all winners will have to wait a bit to receive their prize this year but we didn’t want to wait any longer to announce the good news… Voila… Please join us in congratulating all these great creators, amazing craftsmen and bizarre inventors. |

You will notice that the number of awards can fluctuate from year to year. This is because the Legion d'horreur will be awarded to the top 3 effects (by vote) and also to every creator whose *combined* vote total (for all of his/her effects taken together) is greater than or equal to the number of votes won by the 3rd-place effect.
This year, Gemini Artifacts and Darkness each received a combined total (from all of their effects) exceeding the number of votes cast for The Roxanne Effect (which won 3rd place in the 2016 competition), and they will consequently be inducted into the Legion d'horreur. It is a bit of a misnomer that I should appear twice on the list. Each year the creators whose effects win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be automatically inducted into the Legion d'horreur. The anomaly of my appearing twice is only because, after factoring out The Faerie Shilling, your votes for the other Prof BC effects qualified for the honour again--but I will be inducted just the once for obvious reasons. This will remain the rule in future voting years: winners will receive recognition for each of their accomplishments, but they may be inducted only once (per year) into the Legion d'horreur. My very deep thanks to Dr. SH for taking on this extraordinarily difficult task and for being so flexible in rethinking a way to make the vote honour everyone whose contributions received significant attention from the voting public. Thanks also to Darkness for challenging us to think again and ensure recognition was representative. My profoundest thanks to everyone who voted--not only for my effects but for every effect that won recognition. We are a small community, and appreciation is always the best spur to propel us into ever greater fields of inquiry and endeavor. Now, with FATHOMS and ORACULUM already off the 2017 launching pad, I think we are already seeing a red-letter year in our art form! Thrilling times! IMPORTANT NOTICE: Would all of the announced winners from Dr. SH's list (above) for both 2015 and 2016 please PM me your land mailing address. As soon as the medallions are ready, I will ship them to you along with your certificates. These are still a month or two from completion, so I crave your patience and indulgence--oh, and CONGRATULATIONS! so very well deserved to you each and all. BC

The medallion will be golden with enamel colours as pictured. The front features the wording you see and an image of Trivia (pronounced TRE-wee-ya in Latin btw) in blue, silver, red and a touch of green about the hair. The back depicts a victory wreath of laurel surrounding an area where will be engraved the year of recognition.
I am currently working to make it a hefty, large medallion rather than merely a coin and, if I can manage it (and I think I probably can), it will come on a ribbon. My intention is to make it beautiful, collectable, desirable and above all a fitting tribute to the magnificent work done by so many in furtherance of our art form. Trivia is the goddess who "haunted crossroads, graveyards, and was the goddess of sorcery and witchcraft, she wandered about at night and was seen only by the barking of dogs who told of her approach." She is also called the Queen of Ghosts. Her name indicates her association with the crossroads (Tri-via, or three-ways/paths) which represent the ways of life, death, and the shrouded path between. Wow chaps, you really have gone above and beyond. So thank you. This is an unexpected treat.
Prof when you stated that Trivia can only be seen by the barking of dogs, it made me wonder if this was in Lovecraft's head when he wrote " We shall see that at which dogs howl in the dark, and that at which cats prick up their ears after midnight." in his story, From Beyond. |

Not raising feathers, but it needs mentioning because it keeps getting lost in the mix...
Seven Sins is a creation of both myself and Darkness. He created the plaques, and I gave it the method. Hope this is not interpreted in a mean-spirited way as that is not the intention. |

Congratulations to Darkness (and everyone else as well.) I do realize that there is more than just the "7 Sins" that he has been mentioned for.
I just want to make sure that it is understood that he and I do NOT have any "beef" with one another. |

This is a great surprise. Many thanks to Prof. BC and Dr. SH. for their efforts to elevate our art of bizarre magick.
Even if there were only one mention, it still is a big deal for me. My excitement is not just for the award but for the point I am at which was not even something I ever dreamed of. I also would like to acknowledge Aiden Sinclair for making Pearls of the Passed a sharped, focused effect and putting in countless hours of performance. Without him it wouldn't be what it is now. |
