HI all:
Has anyone seen this kind of scam in US or Europe? I've seen quite a few when I was a kid on the streets in China. The performer scatters some sunflower seeds on a rug. He picks up a random number of the seeds and slaps them into a shallow bowl a few times and on the last time, he quickly covers the bowl with a board. Now you guess how many seeds are left in the bowl. Of course you can't guess it right when the bet is high. Here is a video of the real thing. The hustler got arrested as you can see in the video, and he exposed his methods in the police station. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnvB8YbGnq4 I hope yall enjoyed the videos I shared before and I hope they are related to the topic of this forum. |

Good post. What will they think of next?
I am not familiar with this particular "hustle." However, surreptitiously stealing a seed or adding a seed during the maneuvering should not be too difficult (as shown). I can see where it could be quite confusing to the observer if the operator is picking up seeds, tossing them in the bowl, removing some, tossing some more seeds in, etc. - something akin to moving or tossing the cards in Three Card Monte to create confusion. And of course, if someone guesses correctly on a big bet, I would assume the operator's confederate will make a bigger bet and only one bet is allowed so the sucker can never win. |

The expose he did also shows he can choose to either add one seed or not by a magnet and a gaffed seed when he removes the board.

What a weird scam. I have never seen anything remotely like it.
