Greetings! A thank you is in order first as I have been reading the Café for many years without signing up. I have learned a lot through the wealth of knowledge here and hope to be able to add some value myself in some small way.
I started out like a lot of folks getting hooked at an early age. By the time I was in high school I was doing paid shows. Built my own Zig Zag and Sub trunk that I used throughout high school and college. Dabbled in escapes, carnival stuff and traditional close up magic. Went through the school of hard knocks with walk around restaurant work and kid shows. My taste in the last several years have turned to bizarre magic. I have followed and made friends with a lot of folks in the Spooky forum and look forward to being more active in the discussions there. |

Welcome Dr. O,
I wish I'd started early. It seems to have given you a lot of time to explore different genres in Magic. You'll be glad you joined. It is more fun once you can take part in the conversation. -Mary Mowder |

Welcome to the Café Dr. O!
You sound like an interesting character. You have played with quite some genres already! Would you say you know your character very well, or do you still find you are changing and discovering everyday? I would like to start practicing more for children or maybe even retirement homes, to eventually go to, as you put it "the school of hard knocks". I'd definitely have to say there is something very intriguing about bizarre magic. Are you currently still doing paid shows or have you moved on to something else?

Thanks for the warm welcome Mary and ThSecret. Never to early to start Mary. We need to be thankful that we received the 'spark' that got us started. I was late to the game joining the SAM and IBM since I didn't have a magic shop where I grew up so was mostly self taught. Thank goodness for books!!
I went through several character 'regenerations' through the years. I finally settled on being myself which is very liberating. I guess I am lucky being an 'interesting character'. ThSecret I would encourage you to explore doing magic for children. I still do some children's shows and they can be very rewarding. I'm fortune enough not to have to rely solely on magic for my livelihood so I pick and choose where I perform. Bizarre magic has always fascinated me perhaps because a lot of the presentation focuses on the 'story' and less on the 'trick'. Sorry for the long winded answer. Glad to be here. |

Hello Dr., A fellow bizarrist here, great you joined the Café'. I find I get so much out of generating an interesting story, sometimes even just a single line of the story making some finely tuned remarks and watching people react. I view bizarre magic as NOT just something with a macabre theme but one mostly based around a story; while not all story driven magic is bizarre it makes the magic seem more of a real act and not just a "tricky puzzle".
Most magicians I have seen tend to take that comedy road, being fun and likable, cracking some well timed jokes and puns.... and having some of the high points in the act be the revelation or presentation of the magical effect. I found I was often telling a lot better stories about magic or magicians then the "magic" I was trying to perform. So, how you say, when you settled on being yourself and found it lucky you were already an interesting character is a good thought for anyone new to magic. I wasted time trying to emulate magicians I liked instead of the magician I already was. But maybe this comes with age also. Ok just a few thoughts. See you in the SPOOKY section. |
