On our cover this month is Katherine Mills, a household name in the U.K., having co-starred in a long-running hidden camera type of TV series about magicians who are disguised as substitute teachers and befuddle their students. She’s also the first female magician/mentalist to have had her own TV series, Mind Games. She’s an adept magician and her mental work on TV belies the influence of the production company, who also produce Derren Brown’s shows. There are also a number of videos of her performing in our digital edition.

On December 1st I attended the last of three shows which Ricky Jay did in New York City. His performing style has evolved over the years, a natural thing with age (and a good thing, too—there’s nothing worse than seeing a senior citizen pretending to still be 20). He received a standing ovation and I’ll tell you why in this issue.

We have an abundance of excellent columns this month with something for everyone. Jim Steinmeyer’s “Conjuring” explains “Mad Marketing,” a stand-up or stage mentalism effect that’s easy to do. * In “Cardopolis” David Britland teaches his Spin Change, a visual color change of a card as it spins in the outer end of the deck. * In the “Chamber of Secrets” John Gaughan makes a dove and a cannonball transpose. * In “DaOrtiz ala Carte!” Dani DaOrtiz describes “Four Coincidences.” A wonderful effect. * Harrison Greenbaum continues his elucidations of how comedy can be used in magic in “You are all Terrible!” This month Harrison delves into the construction of jokes in magic. * Helder Guimarães offers a bold and deceptive handling of the classic “Pocket Interchange” plot. Using no difficult sleight of hand, his “One Clean Transposition” may well find its way into your repertoire. * Why Zombies Attack is the catchy title of David Kaye’s column on children’s magic this month in “The Expert at the Kids’ Table.” David’s unique understanding of the psychology of his audience is no full display as he attempts to corral the little zombies into being an attentive audience. * Tom Stone does what he does best: invent! In this month’s “Lodestones” he creates a new routine. It’s a classic—a stand-up beauty worth the price of your subscription to the performer who uses it. And it requires … a Change Bag! * Eugene Burger’s entry into his notebook this month talks about how to build a coherent show, accompanied by a video in our digital edition. * Bob Read’s escapades as a collector and observer of the absurdity of life continue in this month’s “Hidden Treasures.” * Harry Riser died in December, and his friend and student Johnny Thompson memorializes him. * Todd Karr covers magic world-wide in “The Eye”; Jon Racherbaumer covers literature relating to magic in “On the Slant”; Daniel Ulin covers life at mecca in “Knights at The Magic Castle”; David Oliver, Joe M. Turner, and David Britland cover the latest tricks, videos, and books in “Light from the Lamp.”

Subscribe for as little as $35 a year and you can buy the $95 book “The Vernon Touch” for only $25 plus postage.

The Katherine Mills article and multimedia were fantastic! She'll obviously be a name to watch in the future.

On page 11, Max Maven's "Speaking of Max" multimedia file is missing, as is the multimedia file for David Britland's "Cardopolis" column. Will these be available later?

I'm off to study Jim Steinmeyer's "Mad Marketing" in further depth.

Max had the flu, and David Britland forgot he told me that he was going to do a video. So, those won't be coming. Very tough to juggle all this stuff!

I imagine so. I hope Max gets better soon!
