"Why should I be worried about dying? It's not going to happen in my lifetime!" - Raymond Smullyan

This is unverified beyond this one facebook post, but it's sad if true: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_f......46943160

His best-known book is "What is the name of this book?", which starts out with, "You have two coins that total 15 cents. One of them is not a nickel. What 2 coins are they?", and works up progressively to Godel's Incompleteness Theorem.

Here's his 1982 appearance on Carson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E27v83WWiGo

Here's a video made for G4G in 2006, after his wife passed away: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDdx9N-Nxlc

He will be missed.

Thank you for posting this. Is his friend, I can confirm that these reports are true. Professor Smullyan passed away late Sunday night. He died near his home in upstate New York with friends and family close by. All are deeply saddened that this great man is no longer with us. He was 97.

Here is some of Raymond's magic. This video doesn't do him justice, as he is much older here and the camera angles are poor. Nevertheless, being that it is magic, it feels relevant to this group:

The answer is a nickel and a dime? I love it. Never heard that one. Which book is it from?

Raymond, I believe it is from "What is the name of this book?". See amazon link below.

Not quite magic (although some of the solutions came close!) but he also wrote two of my favourite chess books, The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes and The Chess Mysteries of the Arabian Knights, collections of retrograde analysis chess problems. Absolutely wonderful.
