His best-known book is "What is the name of this book?", which starts out with, "You have two coins that total 15 cents. One of them is not a nickel. What 2 coins are they?", and works up progressively to Godel's Incompleteness Theorem.

Thank you for posting this. Is his friend, I can confirm that these reports are true. Professor Smullyan passed away late Sunday night. He died near his home in upstate New York with friends and family close by. All are deeply saddened that this great man is no longer with us. He was 97.

Not quite magic (although some of the solutions came close!) but he also wrote two of my favourite chess books, The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes and The Chess Mysteries of the Arabian Knights, collections of retrograde analysis chess problems. Absolutely wonderful.

So bummed that THIS is how I learn about someone this awesome. Spent some time reading up on him and now have to order some books. RIP
