Got a tiger by the tail here. Just too much to handle by myself. Need help! This is set up so anyone who has the list can make changes if they ask me for permission with the doc open. Bill Hegbli has joined the team and has been adding his wealth of knowledge. If you want to help punctuate, spell check, ad a name, Fill in history that's great. Follow the guidelines and keep it short "Just the facts Mam" No links please. Spend 2 min helping or 2 days, all help is welcome.

All you guys forgot Mr. Robert Stull and his Stull Magic Company that ran about 4 years in the 1940's. He also had a magic shop also. He was a master mechanic and magical inventor he created the Stull Fish bowl,Stull watch,Stull cigarette gimick,Jumbo cups and balls among others. He is a unsung maker.

Another maker that is seldom mentioned is Robert Nelson the mentalist,he was located in downtown Columbus,Ohio on 336 South High Street. The magic shop name was Bob Nelson's Magic Shop, also home to Robert Nelson Enterprises, where metal and wood products where turned out such as rice bowls (brahmin style-I have a set),Frank Ducrot style. He also did paint work and repair work of apparatus.

I think that Nick Ruggerio needs to be on the list, too.

I agree! It's tough, doing a list like this! Ya gotta "narrow" it a bit. --I'm just glad that the only "magic props" that I ever made was a homemade tambourine when I was in high school. I bought a used Merv Taylor, "Tambor" from Harold Martin, a few years later.

Don,
I am having a Thayer invitation sent to you to the email address you show in your profile here. Regarding keeping the list reasonable, might I suggest that any names be given minor cross-over details if needed. Example would be Okito. Could say, "also worked with Joe Berg, Don Redmon..." Worth Magic, owned by Jim Simon later became Milson-Worth, now owned by Lyn Johnson. The name Worth Magic is derived from Fort Worth, TX. Resor Magic should also be added to the list. Born and raised in Lima, Ohio, Richard D. Resor opened the Resor Magic Company as a part-time magic company in 1947. He ran it full-time from 1962 to 1969. He won first prize and international recognition at the International Magicians Conference in 1965 with his Buzz Saw Through Arm. He died on May 28, 1979 at 55.

Like must have passed away, but that leaves to many out. Not collectible, but who am I to say that. Must have built for more than five years, don't even think that information is out there. Didn't Okito stop building stuff for sale after 4 years? The list is coming along nice and am thankful for help I am getting from others. If you have the link take a look at how we are doing.

I would be hesitant to edit the list in any way at all. As long as the list can be modified, and is not subjected to actually being physically printed, such as a book, it could become the most comprehensive work of it's kind. It kind of bothered me that coin makers were to be omitted. Yet, many coin makers also make one or two non-coin items. Johnson, Tango, Sasco, Sterling, Pressley Guitar, Eddie Gibson are all examples. Jamie Schoolcraft and Todd Lassen deserve to be recognized on the list... IMHO.
Regarding Okito, I'd have to check the timeline, although Bill Trotter should know off the top of his head, the years that he built independently. But... he also built for other dealers, who were themselves, also builders. Companies like Abbott's hired builders like Babbs, West, etc., besides doing much of their own in-house manufacturing. There are many dealers who farmed out exclusive items from a variety of builders. Joe Stevens does this. Gimpy, George Ledo and I on that list. The Trickery also has, but sometimes the actual builders were not named or recognized. I did several items for Howard, but my name was never on the work. I imaging that there are plenty of these unknown builders out there. Who is FAB Magic having make some of their stuff? I doubt Rick is doing it all himself. Paul Diamond and Daytona Magic both did/do this. I worked with Tricks 'N Treats in Birmingham. We made a lot of stuff in-house, some of which we even supplied to other dealers, often in trade for stuff they made. The Silkolas that Magic Masters was selling came (at least partially) from us. Horse-trading was quite common among the old-school dealers. I saw it happen a lot at conventions, I still get approached to do this.

We may ad the coin guys at one point and ad more names that are primarily dealers. I would like to put this thing some place where it can be a growing document so it is always current.

Why not name the builder? If I had a favorite builder and I knew a dealer commissioned him to build an item I would, A. seriously consider ordering it since I was a fan of that creators work, and B. have more faith in that dealer's taste since they were pursuing the same craftsmen I was pursuing. Instead, as a buyer/collector I'm left at looking at a prop thinking..."Hmmm, that looks like it could have been made by Magic Wagon, and I love Magic Wagon. I guess I can contact this dealer to find out if it is and then...Oh, what's this post on Facebook?"...sale lost. In other words, if a dealer is going through the trouble of partnering with a specific builder, celebrate that fact and promote it. Otherwise, buyers like me will question why the dealer is NOT mentioning the builder. We know the dealer isn't in the back making the prop. So that's sketchy. And if the prop is made with a iconic style, e.g. Magic Wagon, why isn't the dealer bragging about working with them? Is this an inferior product that Magic Wagon doesn't want to be associated with? If you are a dealer and went through the trouble of partnering with a builder to produce a custom item for you, brag about it! Embrace it! Collaboration makes everyone look good.

I can't do this, but I just wanted to put it out there. Perhaps the list can ultimately be filterable, so visitors choose from from a menu and narrow his or her search?

I have found when searching for magic related items or people to always have the last word in the search Magic when looking for tricks, and Magician when looking for a person.
As in - Johnson Products Coin Magic http://www.johnsonmagicproducts.com/shop/ In Johnson Products, I don't know why, but it comes up listed under as Zen Cart, The Art of E-Commerce. So you have to read the details. |

Fantastic. I'm hoping to contribute with additional information, just trying to find the time.
Even without embellishment, what you've accomplished so far is amazing. A great resource!
