Fair points Drew.
I can totally understand where you are coming from and I am perfectly willing to address James brilliant thinking on the subject, as it is a similar style of effect. I can also tell you that his effect was not necessarily an inspiration on mine at the time of its creation as it wasnt on my mind. But I can publicly give credit to his work here and now. I still stand by mine being original and different enough to warrant its own release, but I acknowledge James Brown's thoughts. Hope this clears things up. -Watkins |

My apologies if my comments were interpreted as meaning that your handling of the plot wasn't worthy of release - is IS solid and workable (and "Severence" is a GREAT addition as I mentioned before). I was just advocating for a bit of crediting and trying to understand what I would get out of studying "Separation Anxiety"
I'm planning on picking it up in the next week or two and hopefully I'll recognize the differences that you've mentioned as well as increase my toolbox for such effects. Thank you again Watkins for addressing my questions/comments in a positive, friendly manner! Best, Drew

Hey guys,
I've made some personal modifications to Dark Entries as I've been using it at my corporate events in place 4DT. It is a brilliant thing to use in the Jazz Q&A format ala Cassidy or on its own! I've had such a blast using this material, hope you all have been enjoying too. XX, -Jakob |

I picked up "Separation Anxiety" (the single release PDF) and can now address a few of my previous comments in more detail.
THE GOOD: This is an extremely well thought out routine. It definitely shares aspects of some work already available to the community but that doesn't diminish from the legitimacy of the release. There are a number of subtleties that are welcome additions to the plot - most notably how Watkins goes about acquiring the "PIN" in an ethical way. The scripting shared for the amnesia sequence is also extremely clever. I feel that this is a MUCH stronger framing and treatment of the plot than "When the Sky Was Opened" (taught in "Jhana") - that's obviously a subjective opinion but I was impressed by Watkins' application of his "Severance" strategy with regards to a PIN divination. Watkins also shared links to two videos to see the routine in action - one of them even shows how the routine plays in a "worst-case-scenario" when the amnesia doesn't take. I felt this was a GREAT thing to include. THE (NOT SO) GOOD: The only real comment I have to say in the negative is: WHERE IS THE CREDITING? I noticed a lack of crediting in "Jhana" and it was reconfirmed in this manuscript. While reading I saw a number of principles and concepts from the work of Michael Murray, Jerome Finley, Fraser Parker, Peter Turner, and James Brown. As I've mentioned before - even if they aren't DIRECT inspirations I believe there's still an obligation on the part of those who release material to have a working knowledge of what has been shared before (regarding specific plots) and recognize the work of others who have come before. Barring that issue I found "Separation Anxiety" to be a thought provoking read and something I'll definitely work on integrating into my repertoire. Thanks Watkins for sharing it. Best, Drew

Much appreciated Drew,
I actually did try to include as much crediting within the text of "Positive/Negative" as I could, however I didn't include a specific section for crediting (which I plan on doing from now on). All of the creators you mentioned above (Michael Murray, Jerome Finley, Fraser Parker, Peter Turner) are most certainly mentioned throughout the book, (aside from James Brown) but as I said from now on I will definitely put more effort to include a section specifically for credits looking forward. Thanks again for your comments and review! -Watkins |

I can't speak for the rest of "Positive/Negative". But, I have had the unnerving privilege of being on the receiving end of "Thanatos", performed by a friend of mine. That is a very well-thought-out piece of dark and spooky mentalism, and the reveal of the date is rather unsettling - I had the feeling of: "hmmm, there might be some truth in this..."

Finally finished this bad boy, and would have happily paid $80 for it (I won a contest in this thread).
Even if you don't like all the premises, a lot of the value here is in how Watkins squeezes maximum effect out of simple, direct methods. Subtleties, subtleties, subtleties. In this sense, there's probably something you could take from every effect here. Also, something cool about this material is it's mentalism with a mysterious, magical feel; maybe because of the premises? Not entirely sure how Watkins achieves this, but it's pretty unique to him. When I have the finances, definitely plan on buying Jhana! Thanks Watkins! |

I first heard about the mastermind of Mentalism that is Robert Watkins through his book release with Fraser Parker, called JHANA. I was very interested in one of the routines described. Robert did not disappoint! He is a fresh breath for the world of Mentalism, utilising classic methodology in great new ways.
So, I later found out about this book, and ordered it the moment that I had the money saved up. Once again, Watkins did not disappoint. You know those times as a performer where you are reading through the methodology and cannot help but smile or laugh? I've found that happen a lot with Watkins' work (and not just from me)! Thanatos is one such effect (included in the negative portion of the book). The premises in the routines of this book are very unique and interesting, and the fact that Watkins has performance videos online on his YouTube just is another bonus really. Overall, this is a great book, and if you can secure a copy then do it!! You will not regret it! |

Hi All,
Im so late to the party on this but thanks to Warren Thackaray for mentioning this otherwise it would have passed me by! I contacted Watkins to see if he still had any copies left and luckily for me he did, So I ordered this and cant wait to receive this as its sounds really interesting considering the story work and twists/turns to conceal the methods - or this is what I learnt from an interview he did with Kent Axell. For those who don't have this can I advise you to contact him at watkinsmentalism@gmail.com to grab your copy while you can. Warmest regards Dr Rob |

What can I say. I purchased this from Watkins what is almost two years ago now. I loved it then when transitioning more so into mentalism, and I still love it now. It’s one of those books that I continually go back to.
The material in here is top class. Some very thought provoking and interesting ideas! The write up is very engaging, and the material practical. Watkins combines modern thinking and mechanical approaches to create some very fantastic performance pieces. Thanatos is such a different concept - I’ve spoken recently with him and he shared an alternative application of the principle which had me guffawing and shivers sent down my spine. VERY hard hitting mentalism. Watkins is a top guy and this is probably one of my favourite books on mentalism. Probably one of my favourite fellow mentalists too. The image on the cover of mine was a little pixelated which is the only minor downside, but not a huge thing that worries me at all because the material within eliminates any worry about what the book looks like. Overall I’d rate this at 9.5/10. You’re missing out if you have an interest in mentalism but don’t have one. |
