Just curious what your favorite packs flat/small routine is?
Mine would probably be silk to egg and mental epic. Sketch-o-magic is also a pretty nice prediction effect.

I'm not proud of the method but I do a great Blendo routine with a Marble type change bag I made and a line if Silks that become a Butterfly "silk". It runs 7 minutes of FUN and is my featured Birthday effect. I bring it up because the writing is what makes this a good Trick. My partner Tom and I came up with it over time from a simple blendo effect to a fleshed out bit. Doing some writing can make something plain into something fun.
I made the "silk" out of white butterfly lining (an acetate type liner used for coat linings at one time). I made a handkerchief and traced the butterfly from a piece of cardboard underneath with permanent felt markers. The cardboard helped wick extra ink from bleeding too far. You should practice technique on a few scraps before using a hemmed kerchief. Design a simple bold picture for best result with the medium. Do it in bits in a well ventilated area. I originally made the silk with real silk and silk dye (using dye resist to stop bleed) but it just couldn't hold up to the constant use. the "new" one wears like iron. Do not fold the acetate silk over on itself for storage for several months. Mine left a ghostly image well after one would expect. Just put paper towel in the fold. Acetate is not good for packing like real silk but is great for "Silk on Rope", the top rubber-banded silk in silk through glass and such. Please let me know if you try this. I'd love to see a photo of other peoples work. -Mary Mowder Click here to view attached image. |

Lately for me, it's been Tommy James "Hide and Seek" house. The built in fun and humor is non stop. First you show your beautiful "family" who are hyperbolically ugly. Then you have the kids play "find Shelley." Of course, she's gone. Then the kids yell out "come out come out wherever you are!" Finally, the Shelley card appears in a flash inside the house and you can remove the card. It literally fits into an envelope and is visible to kids in a gymnasium.
I've been using it as an opener to talk about my childhood and when I started to love magic |

Squaring the circle packs flat.
Though I have an extra large and heavier gauge it qualifies to fold and pack flat. It is not a production device. A metal circle visually changes to a metal square. These days I say "Now appearing in H D", as it changes to a TV like shape. "Harris DEUTSCH , that is Also known as Dr. Laugh" http://www.abra4magic.com/Merchant2/merc......icTricks

I love this post because I'm tired of packing my Lefler case around and trying to travel with just a "suitcase". My biggest hit is the paper hat tear, done to music. Everybody loves it. I also do a bank night, with just 5 envelopes (and a TT). Again, it gets great responses. For kid shows I do the coloring book, using a routine by Silly Billy. Packs flat, and the kids love it! I also do the twentieth century silks done to a story (the three little pigs), but this requires a palmo ball, so technically it's not "flat". But it's pretty close! Jim

Aside from puppets, my entire act fits in my pocket. Not flat, but certainly packs small.
Eating a balloon. Sponge balls. Thumb tip and ribbon vanish. Egg bag. Six card repeat/cards across. Etc.

Not necessarily my favorites, because some I've used, some I never have... but here are some other ideas...
Although I don't have the book any longer, Joel Bauer's "Hustle, Hustle" had a list of tricks that could mostly all fit within a reasonable case, yet provide about 2 solid hours of working material. Worth a look. Sponge Balls are great for stage, but be sure to use very large ones (at least 3"). David Ginn has a really nice manipulation-type routine using large sponges in one of his older books. It could easily be done with patter or to music. Anything with silks or rope packs very small, yet appears showy on stages. The Rice Encyclopedia of Silks and any book on rope magic should be in every magician's library anyway. Hundreds of possibilities there. Cords of Phantasia uses both ropes and silks. Add a couple of audience members and it fills a stage, yet everything would fit in a package the size of a soda can. Color-changing records are very showy, yet pack extremely flat. I know some magicians will turn their noses up and say that kids don't know what they are. They will, if you TELL them what they are. For those still not convinced, Tricks Co. from Japan used to make a set of color-changing rings that were basically the same as their color-changing 45 rpm records, minus the center. You can occasionally find these on the used magic sites. If a kid doesn't know what a ring is, he probably doesn't know his own name! Torn & Restored Newspaper packs about as flat as, well... a sheet of paper! Linking Rings - Eight rings (any diameter) packs down to about 1". Too big? Use smaller or fewer rings. Multiplying Bottles - Compared to what they look like when they have all been produced, the entire set packs rather small. Almost any of the silk-screened cardboard stuff that Supreme Magic used to produce. Temple Screen - The prop itself packs flat as day old beer. The items produced can be collapsible/compressible items, or stuff you pick up on the way to the show and give away so you don't have to cart it home (fruit, candy, soda or water bottles). Cardiographic or the non-card variations. Visible Coloring (Instant art) Anything that nests - wands, clocks, etc. Anything that collapses - Sponge items, spring flowers, feather flowers, rubber production items...

They call theirs the Russian Rings. https://www.laflinmagicstore.com/product-p/mrr.htm So, that might be a source for a variation of the trick, if you can't track down the one from Tricks Co. from Japan that Michael recommended. The Laflin version is different from the standard version, where plain records / discs change to solid colours of red, blue, and yellow (or red, green, and yellow). I think in the Laflin version several plain rings change one by one to become multi-coloured. - Donald
