A nauseating video.
1. Why are there no regulations requiring airlines to honor tickets sold? Are corporate profits really worth this? 2. What kind of "police" action is this? Absolutely sickening.

I know that if you buy a cheap ticket you are subjective to being bumped, but that takes place before you even board. This is the first time I've ever heard of randomly picking people to kick off.
I've been offered perks/upgrades/money before to give up my seat on a plane before. I would hate to be the United staff that took that seat after all that. It would be a very long and uncomfortable flight....

It's apparently common. We had a (non-violent, but) similar incident with Air Canada last week.
Apparently, airlines are free to deny service to anyone they want if they have over-sold flights. IMO, a perfect example of a situation where we need to regulate the market.

Poor united, look up the video on you-tube United Airlines Breaks guitars. I want to say they can't get a break, but in both cases they seem to have asked for it for unprofessional behavior.

The doctor deserved his treatment. As the United spokesperson said, he "refused to volunteer."

On Monday, United released a statement from CEO Oscar Munoz: "This is an upsetting event to all of us here at United. I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened. We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation." sorry to have to re-accommodate those customers? remember to make sure they don't have cameras on address that to "first class - or else" for traveling. can anyone claim exclusive rights to the video/audio clip after it's gone viral? Folks, this week is off to a rough start.

The policy may seem unfair (I certainly don't like it), but that's what you agree to, whether you realize it or not.
If policy states that passengers can be removed after boarding, then this man refused to act according to the policy he agreed to when he purchased his ticket(whether he bothered to read the fine print or not). When he refused to leave his seat, security were well within their rights to remove him. What followed was all his fault. And the hysterical woman seems to think that right/wrong is determined solely by what makes her uncomfortable to watch - she didn't like watching him being removed forcibly, therefore, it was wrong. Please... When I was traveling a lot, I would cringe when I would get a United ticket, as I've had far more delays and cancelled flights with United than any other airline on which I've traveled regularly. I wish nothing good on United, but in this case - again, if their stated policy is that they can remove passengers post-boarding - they were right to forcibly remove him when it became clear that he was not going to move. Somewhat unrelated - considering what the passenger did after the fact, I'll wager every passenger on that plane was grateful he was gone (if he's a doctor - as he claimed - then I'm the pope).
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

A greedy company greedily deliberately overbooks and then throws off a paying passenger? Get your priorities straight, man. Hysterical woman? She was appalled by the brutal treatment the man was getting, caused entirely by United. I will never fly United again.

If you're never going to stay at a hotel that overbooks, I hope you like park benches.

If anyone, ever, physically touches me in an any way to remove me from a seat which I have payed for on an airplane, I will sue and I will win. I actually hope this happens, because I'd like the money.
Anybody (Mark?) wanna bet against me that this guy will receive a settlement? |

If in LA, I already have a lawyer in mind. And I will sue and I will win. Again, wanna bet? This story isn't really about the policy of bumping, but the physical force used to removed the guy bumped. He broke no law, but his lip got broke "by an armrest". Right. Find me a jury who will believe that, Lobo. |

Part of the problem, at least, comes from the often-overlooked policy that allows airlines to stop passengers from boarding a plane if it's overbooked. You agree to it when you book your tickets.
It's standard practice for airlines to sell more tickets than there are seats. Carriers calculate how much wiggle room they have based on past stats that track no-shows and offer passengers vouchers if flights end up too full, and no two airlines have the same approach. -------------------------------------------------- I've seen lots of people in standby because they got bumped, but that happens before they get on the plane. I bought a no frills flight to the Philippines for next month ($248 round trip) which I expect to be a middle seat, in the back, without a reclining seat back. Though I don't fly to the U.S. that often, I've decided not to ever use United.

OK, let's place the bet.
It's a bit difficult, because I can't find the name of the Asian doctor. (Maybe Balducci can find it.) You and I will meet for lunch in CA, and if the doctor has received a settlement, you pay. If not, I'll pay. (I have more conditions, but those are best worked out in a PM. I'd hate to miss the chance to have Bill there for our lunch, but he has no skin in the game, so I don't know who should pay for his lunch.) |
