Does anybody know where to buy a decent TV Card Frame that will fire the card accurately every time? Thanks.

Owen's Magic Crystal Card Catch: http://www.owenmagic.com/Card/card.html Look to pay around a $1000.00.
I have found that it is the person not paying attention to details that is the problem every time. Only use perfectly straight cards, do not riffle shuffle the cards causing them to be bowed in any direction, and see that it is lined up exactly. It is just easier to blame the prop, for most magicians. |

Hi Paul
Just about any of the less-expensive-than-Owens T.V. Card Frames (including Grants/MAK, Magic Masters etc.) work well in my experience. As in all cases of buying something like this, it is best if you can actually see the item in person OR have a definite return privilege with the seller. As I noted a couple of years ago, the made-in-India version that found its way into my hands, while it works great, produces a loud TWANG when the magic happens. Not good. The heavy metal springy motive source is the reason. Similar designs having a lighter metal gimmick for the springiness are much quieter. Consider, too, that many of the older (vintage & collectible & very effective & reliable) Card Frames (not necessarily called "T.V." Card Frames back in the day) used a simple rubber band to slingshot the concealed card into place. You might check Jim Gerrish's book on T.V. Card Frames for a ton of additional information. Happy hunting! Julie |

I LOVE MY Abbott's TV Card Frame. Works like a champ every single time.

Never seen that Abbott's Card Frame in all the years I have visited Abbott's. They must have found an estate model, and made some up.
I have to day, that works like the one I had that was held between the magician's hands. Can't miss at zero distance. Looks like it uses a bridge size playing card. Nice to see the classic Abbott's Magic back once again. |

Paul, I have a mini-collection of this prop and can honestly say that I have not seen a recent version of this worth owning in years. I would suggest going to a modern builder like Michael Baker here on the Café, or others, and seeing if they can build something for you custom. It may cost more up front, but will hopefully pay off in the long run.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Thanks for the nod Oz. I have not tackled this because I was never sure how I'd deal with the actual mechanics inside. I've seen a couple different methods to shoot the card. I have examined several, but have only ever owned one. Not sure who made it but it is beautiful hardwood. The problem is... (drumroll)... it isn't 100% accurate. I have yet to figure out why. Sometimes the glass panes tilt and the card misses entirely. Other times it shoots the gap so hard that it flies completely through and off into outer space. Neither are desirable results. But, it's a pretty prop...
To date, the most clever I have seen looks like a hand holding a crystal ball. For some reason, I just love the look of that thing! If I did one, I'd like to do similar with a skeleton hand.

My Abbott's hand held model, only used 2 sheets of glass, rubber bands, and the shooting gimmick.
With my model, 2 rubber bands were used, running from diagonal corners, from opposite sides of the glass. The loader was inserted in the bevel sheets along one side. The glasses then formed a "V", closing one end, so the card was caught by the closed off section, no chance to shoot straight though. |

Maybe, the hand held metal card shooter, only had about a little over a 19th of an inch thickness. The glass was ground rounded on the edges on one side so it slipped in easily.
That is most likely the problem with yours, the pins on each side are to thick, or the plates drop to far down and widen the plates further. I never really studied the stand model, so I don't know if the pins are beveled or just the same thickness the full length. |

Bill Hegbli:
As you know, once upon a time, many, many moons ago....you would take the annual pilgrimmage to Abbott's in August for the Get-Together, and the little stage in the Showroom there in the Grade School would literally be CHOCK FULL of all-things Abbott Made......All manners of beautiful Flowers and flower tricks, Abbott's Multiplying Bottles, 10 and 12-inch Hallow Linking Rings, virtually every prop you could think of including Jumbo Find the Lady Cards, Die Boxes, Coin Buckets, Card Swords, Various Tables, Birdcages and the list goes on and on....... I've learned from experience that If I saw a prop there that looked "Troup-Able", I would check it out further and start asking questions about it's make and determine if I need a few extra "special somethings" for that prop at that time, while Abbott's had them in stock, since it made sense to "get getting while the getting is good" so to speak. When I've found a GREAT Abbott prop......and the Abbott's TV Card Frame I have is one of those "REALLY WELL MADE" props.....I just had to buy it and make sure I could get some mileage out of it. These things don't "last long" out there......It's worth spending the bucks on the good ones. "Cause when you go looking for one down the road you just may nor find one, or find one that is less than satisfactory. that's the thing about Buying Magic Props........sometimes you do great, sometimes, not so great.......so enjoy the great while you can. The GREAT ones out there....are pretty darned GREAT! |

In retrospect it may be Spellbinder who offers a book on the T.V. Card Frame and such. See what happens when you get old(er)?

To answer your questions....For your first question: The answer is YES and NO, if you catch my drift. Second question: Poker Size..... |

Rainboguy,
Thanks for the response. Glad to hear it is poker sized. Not really sure what you mean about yes and no. Sorry, I must be slow on the uptake.

Can the card be signed, in most cases no. only with good card skills and a little tomfoolery that you would probably not be satisfied with, could the actual signed card appear between the glass.
Only with the obsolete in the hands version could it be the actual signed card, but with some pre-planning setup. I wish they would have mentioned that in instructions, but magicians were not as demanding that everything be signed back then. I would have worked it out and not sold mine. See, there is a reason not to get rid of your magic props, never know that 50 years later, someone would make a suggestion that would be useful. |

Hello Paul.
There is a "gimmick"/tool that will enable you to have a spectator tear off a corner of their actual selected card and that card (exact duplicate with torn-off corner) will reappear between the clear plates of glass or plastic. I cannot recall what it is called right now. This handling will require you to steal the original torn corner card from the deck before the reappearance, IF you are going to spring the deck towards the prop. The removal from the deck is necessary so your audience does not see the original torn corner card amongst those on the floor. Julie |

I believe you are think of Gaetan Bloom's Intercessor gimmick.
There is also cards sold that are perforated for doing the same kind of tearing without a gimmick. I am sure, being you have to assemble the plates and bands as part of the effect, there may be an opportunity to load the card with some thought. |

Paul (and others):
What I meant by "Yes and NO" in my response above is that there is a "throwoff" than can be used in a pinch if YOU the performer, signs the card that the spectator selected. Without revealing any specific details, my "throwoff" came in the instructions to the Collector's Workshop Card on Seat. This is both a Bold and Convincing bit...and has no relation to the Intercessor gimmick. |
