Weird question here... do you know of anything I can put on the outside of a dove pan or chick pan so I can pick it up from the bottom and remove the lid after it's been burning for a while and become very hot? I don't want to put on an oven mit or use anything external while doing so.

The Dove pan or any fire pan is not meant to be left burning for over a couple seconds. Your experience is the reason why. It is only aluminum, and thing aluminum will melt.
Fire was never the intended use for the dove pans, it was magicians who decided to use fire. There were fire bowls and pans, they were lined with fire heat resistant material so the metal did not get overly hot, but they still did not let them burn for over a few seconds. Just like any household pot and pans, fire is never directly applied to them without a food product is to be cooked. Same for any metal container, including magic metal products. I don't know if it available any longer, but I purchased a roll of what is called "Fyrrex Paper" by Grant Wilson's, from the hardware store. It is meant to be used in the bottom of outdoor grills, that use charcoal. This does have asbestos locked in the material. I used this to put on the inside of a chick pan I had once, not on the outside. Be responsible, and if you don't know, ask your parents or knowledgeable people how to handle fire. You should also always have a fire extinguisher available as well, it is the law in many places. Hope this information helps you make the correct decisions, that benefits everyone you entertain. |

Not sure if this would work or not. I know the stuff that Bill mentioned. I had a roll decades ago... before asbestos was outlawed. Here is the Grant Wilson product... http://www.ebay.com/itm/vtg-1950s-Grant-......48.l4275

I have seen a chick pan (import?) that was made with a pedestal...

It should only burn for a couple seconds.
Because it will expand and the lid will not come off until it cools. |

Melting point of aluminum is 1,221F... It's not going to melt with regular fire.
It may distort, but that's about it. Your best bet would be to combine Michael's and Julie's advice and get one with a pedestal and is a shallow version. Randi |

You can make a pedestal of wood and mount the pan on top of it. You could also use pottery clay from a craft shop to mold a pedestal, but that would be heavier.

Do you have insurance? Does it cover "burning for a while?"
