These are my top 5 silk tricks and they are pretty slick too.
Silk Cascade (Fountain of Silks) 20 Century Silks (a non-gaffe version). Snap-a-Silk into Silk Through Glass Crystal Silk Cylinder Double Color Changing Silks (in acetate, don't judge me LOL). This is great for parades and as a quick visual effect. I like the acetate because it wears like iron and can be done in the sunlight (if you don't display it at length). With proper handling this can be much more graceful and Magical than typical handling I see. (thanks to my partner Tom for the handling). What are you looking for? You can have some real fun with just a silk and hank B**l and you don't have to fold or pre-set. Where you want to use it and what you want to carry is a big part of your choice. If I had it to do over again, I would not become so fond of Crystal Silk Cylinder (with two opaque tubes). It is a lot to carry. I happen to enjoy folding silk but not everyone does. The fact that I'm willing to do it makes my show look different in the Birthday biz but if you don't like it don't do Silk Cascade. -Mary Mowder |

1. 20h Century and it's descendants (e.g. Marconick's Prisoner Silk; my Third Millennium Silks)
2. Red, white and blue silks to American Flag (or a flag Blendo) 3. Silk Through Rope (as described in _Scarne's Magic Tricks_) 4. Production of silks and a 24-foot SKS streamer from an Alumascreen 5. Cane to Streamer You can see 1,2 and 5 in my promo video at this link https://www.facebook.com/338764602812514......3993505/ Here's a link to a still photo of my streamer production from the Alumascreen: https://www.facebook.com/338764602812514......&theater The Alumascreen was a Fabjance product and unfortunately is no longer produced. Jonathan Neal Brown does the "Silk Through Rope" at the 1:50 spot in this clip from his "Tonight Show" appearance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdUaDxXt84A&t=61s ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I'm not telling you what my "top 5 silk tricks" are.
At this point, you probably wouldn't think much of them, anyway. One of them came from Scot's "Discovery of Witchcraft" published 500 years ago. Another was "invented" (note the " "!) by the late T. Francis Fritz, a hundred years ago. The late Burling Hull "invented", almost a hundred years ago, the method that I use to vanish a silk in Fritz's classic! My opening trick (with silk[s]) goes back about a hundred years, too. If you're seriously interested in tricks that use silks, INVEST in Rice's "Encyclopedia of Silk Magic". Perhaps you'll find YOUR "five favorites". My good friends, Mary and Sonny have generously tried to help you, with some suggestions. However, I doubt that you are familiar enough with the "names or titles" to be able to understand much. In 50 years of mentoring young people, and, older folks, too, I've never recommended a specific trick or prop, 'cuz MY Favorite may, very well, not fit YOU.

Hello impulse
The first favorite silk trick that popped into my mind does not present a typical effect you would expect from utilizing silk handkerchiefs in a magic act. I don't remember the name of it either, but it's been a feature part of a longer routine with us for years. Are you curious? Okay, here goes. The performer has a card "freely" selected. An attractive silk handkerchief approximately 24" X 24" imprinted with bold oriental characters is displayed. The audience is told this is the exact name of their card printed in Mandarin. They are understandably not very impressed. The performer continues to insist this is the name of their card. He encourages them to look more closely at the oriental writing. Suddenly the script on the silk visibly transforms to the name of their card clearly printed in English! I don't know if this is still available or where it's explained (Rice. Dick?), but we've had a lot of fun with it. Julie |

I have to agree with Dick Oslund... what possible good could it do you, to know what I enjoy performing?
As a full time professional, my 'favorites' are things that reset quickly, don't require frequent replacement, that garner gasps and generate applause, and are not overdone (rarely seen). There is another group of favorites... and they are tricks I work on for my own enjoyment. Characteristically, they share none of the attributes above: they are weaker effects that I want to make stronger, silk tricks that use a gimmick that (perversely) I am trying to accomplish by sleight of hand alone, or 'pipe dreams' that exist only to test my creativity. As Dick suggests, get the Silk Encyclopedias and study the plots, variations, and methods of these classic tricks. Each of the volumes contains more than 5 plots ... any of which could make a performer's reputation .

I just love to know what other like what makes you guys connect or seem so different just by the tricks you perform or just right out like. I like to watch silk magic more then do it but its fun regardless. I use to use the Ultimate Dancing Hank by Sean Bogunia till I traded it.

My guess is Julie's effect works exactly like Rabi-duck and the scarf is at a 90 degree angle using some ersatz 'Chinese' calligraphy that is unreadable as it is sideways and in 'reverse'. fortunately,a conveniently held 'slack-taker-upper' does it's job of shortening a thread.
I don't recall seeing it in any of the Rice volumes either!

Yup!
If it's "in" Rice's Encyc., it's "between" pages one and two!!! I think so, too Jonathan. (Rabiduck).

My "Rabi-Duck Surprise!" from The Wizards' Journal #33 describes how to use a special font to write card names or other short messages that you can then print or paint on silk to make your own version of the trick Julie describes (sorry, I don't know the name of the original or its originator, either!). It ends up looking like this:

The top 5 SELLING and the top 5 WELL RECEIVED inevitably end up on different lists -- and depend on venue of presentation. I always figured a cabaret of 100-200 people (wedding reception) seated around a dance floor would be the minimum size I wanted to play -- even though when kforced (usually by relatives) into smaller venues the same tricks worked but overpowered the room.
My favorites by far were the new, larger twists on older effects -- such as using P&A's very limited (only 12 made) Space Voyager to produce a six foot silk. Mis-made flags -- I varied between the 60" flag finish or the multi-step, multi-mis-made wrong colored large version switching the fields, stars and stripes several timea before the finish. Snap silks using the Mr. Electric versioon for fold & roll always worked well, grabbing an off-handed silk founntai ntoward the end and fir the end of the sequence. I have worked with and love well made Blendo Bags for 36" silks, and fiound use for 35-50 foot long streamers for productionm gathers and concealmewnt of various appearancve pick-ups. And yes, doing it right is expensive -- but with well made silks colors last, no tears or pulls unless you are stupidly careless (and at those proices you MiGHT make that mistake once. Oh, yes, the stand-up version of Billy McComb's Half dyed Silk, with proper timing and patter is great! So, unless you are stuck only doing kids shows or occassional amateur appearances, get the best you can afford and care for it. Look for used P&A silks guarenteed in good condition, props like the late Peter White's Birds of Burma, his new principle Space Voyager for six foot silks -- and remember -- display the silks after production, do not just dump them out of sight. BTW - I write in the past tense because I have had to retire from my corporate shows and travel on MD's orders so my sales of props and such aon line do not turn into "Estate Sales."

My top five are still
1. THIS 2. 20th Century Silks 3. Silk to Egg 4. Knots-Off Silk 5. Mis-Made Flag If we were allowed 6, #6 would be Crystal Silk Cylinder. Of course this old dove magician still loves doves from silk. It is unreal the numbers of different routines available from these props. |

I will tell you what my Number One Silk trick is, based on decades of audience response:
Duke's Dye Version by Abbott's Magic. In my opinion, it is THE most under-rated trick in the entire Abbott Line-up. Beautiful, highly visible, colorful, deceptive, fills the stage, customizeable for different audiences, and at the end, you've got plenty of "Cover". I keep the Abbott's streamer as a backup and use Rice's 12" by 25 foot streamer as the "Standard". Your magical journey is just beginning!
