Title: Canes Magic
Artist: Fabien Solaz Producers: The Real Secrets Link: Available At Your Favorite Murphy’s Magic Dealer Demo Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qerQLYl-3Kg Retail Price: $29.95 USD Learning Difficulty: Easy Notes: DVD does not have a play all option. Instead it’s broken down into individual segments. Here’s an interesting DVD. It’s all about how to use appearing, disappearing, and dancing canes. The DVD is from international headliner Fabien Solaz, and footage in the DVD was shot from his cruise ship shows, TV appearances, and street magic sets while in China. Cane magic can be very visual, very nice selections for attention grabbing acts, be it street or stage, and Fabien is a master performer with them. The DVD is broken up into four sections. The Introduction, The Effects, The Secrets, and the Bonus section. Introduction is self-explanatory, and the Effects portion is Fabien just showing the different productions and vanishes in isolation. The Secrets is where he breaks down what he’s doing and how. What’s taught in this DVD? A wide range of productions, flourishes, and vanishes. He also teaches a fire cane, cane to diamonds, cane from balloon, and a dancing cane. If you’ve never worked with canes before this is a wonderful primer. If you’re looking for ideas on how you can include canes into your act this may give you some helpful hints. The downside is that the video does not have a play all feature. So you’re going to be doing a lot of remote surfing through the different chapters to rehearse and review the things that appeal to you the most. Take from that what you will. Are there any hidden costs? Oh you bet there are! Cane magic is not cheap! If you already work with canes it’ll give you some cool ideas on what to do with them. If you’re going to get into this, expect to pay a pretty penny. Canes can be as little as $30 bucks for a cheap one. The canes Fabien recommends costs around $155 per cane. Within the body of his cane act he produces nine canes, so if you’re doing the math a that’s a sizable investment. However for the visual element, you can’t beat it. Its stunning to watch and fun to play with. Appearing canes feel very much like some kind of exotic James Bond prop, and they do add a lot of visual pop to your stage act. Overall I think the DVD has done a respectable job teaching cane magic, and it’s a great reference point. It does teach you how to do the various flourishes, productions, and vanishes it just doesn’t really show you anything about routining. Maybe that’s going to be something expanded on in a second volume? The cane magic has been shown to be versatile enough to play on the street or on the stage. The types of canes available, and Fabien’s preferences are well explained and I feel like this DVD is going to hold a good place in anyone’s library. Check it out for yourself. When I give my product scores below I am measuring them on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 Being absolute the worst score possible, and 10 being the absolute best, making a score of five average. The four points that I grade upon is Product Quality, Teaching Quality, Sound & Video Quality and Overall Quality. Product Quality: 7 The price is okay. The DVD is a great resource, even if you don’t plan to do a lot of cane magic you’re bound to get inspirational ideas from it. Teaching Quality: 7 It teaches what it shows. Wish there would have been more about how to incorporate it into your act more. Or how to build an act with using canes. Video & Sound Quality: 8 Nothing out of place here. Overall Quality: 7 Well worth the buy. Do you have a product you want reviewed? Want to see if it will stand up to the Draven Seal of Approval?
