I was curious if someone could recommend some books that are non-card related? Close-up/Parlor magic is really what I am looking for. I am open to any recommendations even if it does have some card stuff in it.

The Art of Close-Up Magic Volumes 1 and 2 by Lewis Ganson were written specifically to be card free effects. A variety off effects using a variety of items by a variety of performers.
I bought mine in the late 1970's, but I believe I've seen them still for sale. Take a look at some of the magic supply houses. Gary |

Parlor Magic is generally more along the lines of small Stand-Up.
Are you more into Close-Up, Close-Up that will play big or...? -Mary Mowder |

Thanks Chaterbox41! I know some of Lewis Ganson's work and I haven't read The Art of Close-up Magic. I will definitely look into that.

Hello Mary, it is nice to hear from you, as you were the first person to reply to my first post I really have so much material on card magic and then a bunch of newer type effects that are just one-off things. I was looking for close-up that can be versatile so some that plays big and maybe some that is not so big. I want something that has other than card magic only and not stage illusion type of stuff either. Hopefully that is a little better description of what I am looking for. Really, it can be any format wether it be a DVD, Book, or Lecture material.

If you are seriously interested in learning to be a MAGICIAN, you would be wise to read--no--STUDY: T A R B E L L.
Tarbell correspondence course (1927) is available in pdf, FREE. Written almost a hundred years ago, the patter, and, often the presentation is archaic. BUT, you will learn PRINCIPLES!!!

Bobo. There's quite a bit that can be done with a few coins, but someone pointed out on this forum several years back that many of the things you can do with coins can also be done with balls or almost any other small object.
And Bobo is cheap. -Patrick |

Take a look at the Karl Fulves books published by Dover. SW Table Magic would be a good one to start with, but they're all excellent.

Here's a couple of suggestions:
"Tricks" by David Ben, if you can find a copy. Karl Normans "40 Years at the Forks" "Spectacle" by Stephen Minch "Carneycopia" by John Carney, has a good mix of card and non-card magic. There's several food DVDs as well if you're interested.

Have a look at Daryl's Fooler Doolers DVDs and Danny Tong's DVD set.
Right up your alley.

Honestly, your best bet at this point are Penguin magic downloads. Just being realistic here.

Commercial Classics of Johnny Thompson, Volume One
Balls and Net (Silent Mora - Dai Vernon) Coins Through Table (Al Baker) Winged Silver (Dai Vernon) Copper and Silver Transposition(Dai Vernon) Vanishing Glass (Glass Through Table) (Max Malini) Benson's Bowl Routine (Roy Benson) and maybe volume 3 if you would consider the 3 ball routine, because Thompson's is a good one.

The Benson Bowl routine is included in Bruce Elliott's "Classic Secrets of Magic", which would be another useful resource.
