Cliff.
I do enjoy your publication however I feel a need to address a comment or two you made in July issue concerning ball and chain underwater and you calling ******** on it. I have extensive and long history using the cinder blocks you mentioned in your article and I have also used 60 pound ball and chain around my neck at bottom of lagoon in World Magic Awards. I disagree with you calling ********. True, you can carry the weight relatively easily on the edge of the water, its not that big of a deal,,,,where you are wrong is that you say the water helps buoyancy with the weight and lessens the danger... I don't think the weight has ever been a danger,,,rather its a great psychological angle in the peoples mind "dragged to the bottom by a ball and chain or heavy cement cinder block" it creates great mental imagery. I know ive asked many people at my stunts about it. The fact of the matter is I would much rather do the underwater stunt with a heavy weight rather than without for one huge reason - that weight gets me down to the bottom fast and helps keep me down while I work saving me so much effort and air and quite often long after Im out of the cuffs I curl up and hold onto the weight to keep me down,,,boy does this help make the escape play well. Like Houdini said, often the more difficult the escape looks from the front, the easier it is from the back and its certainly the case with underwater and heavy weight. Here is a short clip of underwater escape from shackles and heavy cement cinder block at the bottom of a wave pool ,,,,audience loves it, and the block is great for getting me below the waves and keeping me down in the current.

OK Michael, Since I don't personally do underwater escapes, I am going to take you word on the mechanics of the situation. I do agree with what you have said about psychology. Bottom line; if the audience loved it.. that's all.
I guess the point I missed, and it does make sense, is about the weight taking you down fast. The thing many don't realize about buoyancy is that it either takes you down or keeps you up, there is no middle ground. Sorry if I offended, perhaps this can be re-addressed next issue. On a positive note... Michael reads The Chainletter!

I agree with Michael on this. Completely.
