Hey all, I'm curious, what would you consider your top 10 best close up Magic Tricks?
Some provisos,I'm talking about instant resetting tricks. So ambitious card would apply as would Three Card Monte whereas The Chicago Opener would not. I'm also opening this up all all magic not just cards thanks. |

I love a nice chop cup routine; it's simple and does not require many props. You can make the routine as long or short as you want, and the reset, of course, is quite simple.
Coins are always great as well. I usually do a simple "Coins Across" routine to get everyone warmed up. |

Card to impossible location/ Bill Switch/ Coins across}( I like Paul Gertner's "A Familiar Ring)/ Finger ring on ribbon/ $5 to $1 transpo.
/Messado Rings/ Gregory Wilson's Pointless/ Sponge Balls or rabbits/ Paul Green's 2 card transpo./Richard Sanders' Mr. Stickman (card routine/. There are sooooo many card routines that fit your criteria. Wayne Fox's Secret Soldier is excellent. Anyway that's my list. But there are literally thousands. You just have to find ones that fit you and are enjoyable as well as interactive with your audience.

Sponge Rabbits
Professor's Nightmare (or Cut-and-Restored, or lots of other rope routines) Rapid Transit (from Royal Road) Circus Trick (also from Royal Road - and in Mark Wilson's book, I think) Lots of stuff from Diamond Jim Tyler's wonderful "Bamboozlers" series I JUST got it (literally, yesterday), but Rick Lax's effect "Calendar" looks crazy promising |

Any padle trick - you can make several versions -(some swizer sticks - make good paddles) - Blackstone SR. showed me a good way to present the paddle- instead of having the paddle 'out' from the hand - hold it so the paddle is near your palm- I also have on made from the 'old' decals,on a clear paddle- where a model in a bathing suit is on one side and shes naked on the other side - though it IS tastefully pictured. Helps?? Ralph

Ralph, I remember Ken Allen selling his "Pin-Up Paddle" with your choice of three differently clad girls each applied to a single clear paddle. He even furnished a poetic presentation:
"Daisy the dancer, danced with elation This way and that way, she was a sensation 'Til an extra high bound, sent her gown to the ground And with it, her good reputation!" That's my cultural contribution for today. Julie |

"that's the one" - I bought mine at Joe Bergs -50-60's, upstairs on Hollywood blvd. Down the block was the Hollywood MagicShop (which was also a toy/hobby Shop) was where I first got effects, in the early 1950's- there was a BIG, sloff eyed, very nice gentlelman - who always was willing to help a teen ager. You're talking instant resets, so my faves include coin tricks. I'm not a "coin magician," but my "go to" instant tricks are (1) a coins across routine I do that is all sleight of hand and does not use any gimmicks or extra coins, and (2) a single coin "coins across" transposition followed by the STS Vanish taught to me by Ben Earl. Both are super strong, and you're reset as soon as the coins are in your hands.
And speaking of resets, I reset the Chicago Opener in less than 3 seconds. I've done Pop Haydn's version of it (called the Chicago Surprise) in a strolling magic competition where I performed it 24 times in 90 minutes, and reset it while I was walking the three steps from one table to the next. And while I can't describe the reset here because it would reveal the secret, a little thought and you can see how it's really pretty much an instant reset, given where the two important cards end up.

Could I hazard a guess that would be the one in Tarbell volume 2 that you're talking about? I've been playing with that one of late. Magically Aus |

In trying to add to the list without repeating too much, I'd include:
Finger ring material like Ring Thing by Garrett Thomas. Rubber band work. There is a wealth of material out there - Lazy Man's Handcuffs being a close-up fave for a lot of people. Of course, a ton of mentalism fits the bill. I particularly like "Hands Down" by the Other Brothers. Rostami's Ipredict app is another. |
