I see no mention of it here, so I thought I should inform the group that Eugene has passed after a short struggle with cancer. Surely, he will be missed.

There are two or three threads about Eugene's passing.
I will miss him greatly. Eugene was more than a magician. He was a beautiful soul. He was perfect

I was fortunate enough to be from Chicago and knew Eugene. We would go to lunch.
One time stands out when we went to a relatively new Planet Hollywood. The whole day was interesting because he seemed pretty out of place in my car. It was a 1978 Tans Am with T tops and he was probably the last guy you would expect to see. So we finish lunch and the server brings the bill. I had to ask for a pen to sign the credit card slip. I simply said "thank you" and the server said "oh no you don't get to keep it". Eugene looked at him and said "don't worry the absurdity of a gift from this place has already occurred to us". He was definitely fun. I was fortunate to know him.

When someone of Eugene's caliber passes, we often have reports in multiple threads. It's the only time we allow the same post in multiple forums. Regardless, Eugene was a friend and he's going to be sorely missed.

This just in from Jeff McBride's Magic and Mystery School's McBride's Magic newsletter:
"It is with heavy hearts that we, friends of Eugene Burger, inform you that Eugene has passed away in Chicago at the age of 78. Eugene enjoyed a long, healthy life, but was very recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Even so, his death today came more quickly than expected, and we are deeply shocked and saddened by his loss. We know that in the days, weeks, and months ahead, countless things will be written and said about Eugene, and we will share more information, too. But for now, we want to tell you that Eugene embraced his situation with great clarity, humor, and peace of mind. As he said one day, "Now I am on the way to the ultimate capital M Mystery of life." and, from ME: Eugene was one of a kind, and, he was a friend. I've known him for over 3o years. He was one of those Magicians whom you "Really and Truly Need to Hang out With if you're going to even hope to be a better Magician.......the other being my dear friend and mentor Dick Oslund. The last time I saw him was about 3 years ago, with both of us sitting next to each other commenting on the stage acts performing at Abbott's Get-Together in Colon. He loved the Art of Magic, and it rubbed off on everyone he met. I have never known another Magician in my life who so deeply impressed me with his close-up presentation, especially Eugene's Secret Realm: THE THEATRE OF MAGICAL PRESENTATION. Please join us in remembering and celebrating Eugene, a rare and wonderful person who has meant so much to us and to magicians all over the world. We will dearly miss him. |

I am so sad
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

Very very sad news...
Long time ago, I've made his Wikipedia page for french audience. I would try to spread his views on magic for french magical community, where he's not well known. Perhaps you could help me, I look for "non magical" papers or book of Eugene. I think he gave course or lecture at Yale before he dedicates his life to magic ? I'm interrested in his philosophy. He speaks sometimes of Tillich, Marcel or Heidegger, I would like to go further on his understanding. Did you have some information of this part of his life ? I would to ask directly to him, but sadly I wait to long... So thank you very much in advance for your help in this research. Azoth (@the admin: sorry for multi-posting) |
