Lists of tricks, no matter how well intended that the writer is/was, are especially at this point (less than four weeks to D day) virtually useless. For you, and, those well meaning contributors, who submitted lists of tricks, I submit the following statement. It was written, a long time ago, by a very well qualified magician. He was not the world's greatest performer, but, he understood magic. "THOSE WHO THINK THAT MAGIC CONSISTS OF DOING TRICKS, ARE STRANGERS TO MAGIC. TRICKS ARE ONLY THE CRUDE RESIDUE FROM WHICH THE LIFEBLOOD OF MAGIC HAS BEN DRAINED." Dariel Fitzkee, author of a great trilogy: "Showmanship & Magic", "The Trick Brain". and, "Magic By Misdirection", put it this way: "I must insist that tricks are but tools. This eagerness to add new tools to the workshop, at the expense of learning how to use the tools we already possess, definitely results in overcrowded workshops, but unskilled artisans." As this thread progressed, you have explained a bit about yourself. I think that you are beginning to understand that, "it's not the tricks! "It aint WHAT ya do, it's HOW ya do it!"

I understand this. However, most people have seen ropes, sponges A BA-ZILLION card tricks ! I don't want to be seen as "another magician at a kid's party." Though I understand showmanship is the KEY... I want performances (tricks) that are not run-o-the-mill.

In studying "argumentation" and debate, we learn that there is a "condition" known as INVINCIBLE IGNORANCE. Persons that suffer from this condition, literally, stick their fingers in their ears, so that they can't hear the facts. It appears, I'm sorry to say, that you are suffering from INVINCIBLE IGNORANCE. (i.e. You don't want to hear the facts!) cbguy, Stanyon, davidpaul$, Mary Mowder, and Dick Oslund, (that's me) have all taken time, voluntarily, to try to help you to know what you are facing. All of us KNOW what we are talking about. For myself, I've had 70 years experience performing. 50 years of that, I was a full time magician, touring coast to coast and border to border, averaging 400 45 minute shows each year. I was never "at liberty" (that means "out of work".) I entertained in high schools with 1800+ in the audience. Ditto for some elementary schools. I also worked as a professional circus clown. I did colleges, too. At 644 AM, referring to our comments, you said, "I understand this." SORRY, but, it is evident that you don't understand! PRESENTATION, NOT TRICKS, is what differentiates "magician A" from magician "B" IT AINT W H A T YOU DO, IT'S H O W YOU DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cbguy responded to your statement, this AM, YOU responded with a very insulting comment. I can now understand why you spent lunch hours in detention. WE certainly do not NEED YOU! YOU, NEED US, BUT, INVINCIBLE IGNORANCE is keeping you from accepting the truth!

If you take the time to learn a top card cover pass, you will get more repeat bookings than you could ever imagine. Pick up Derek Dingle's book and you'll be good to go.

Deek, not all good advice is fun or what you hoped. You can still make your own decisions. We all have to get the experiences we need to find our own path. I haven't done everything my mentor told me but I didn't have to fight with him about it (well... mostly). The people here were trying to save you time in the long run. We may take it a little personally when that advice is ignored but still, it is your choice to make (and a choice you SHOULD make for yourself). By the way, Dick often uses all caps and doesn't know how it comes off to a younger crowd (being so old and all) but his advice is good. Please don't just watch YouTube to the detriment of your Magic (it will mislead you). Just take the advice here to the extent that you wish and with some grace. Keep in mind that some of the things you are saying sound a little offensive. I do Classic Magic and Card Tricks and Birthday Parties. I believe that I can also blow you out of the water doing Non-Card Close-Up Magic (I have a large repertoire and a lot more experience). Some of the things guys talk about in small Magic enclaves don't fly so well in a larger more diverse and experienced group. You may be surprised at how many people have never seen any Magic in person. Just because you have seen something doesn't mean everyone has. Magicians see way more Magic performances than "normal" people. Take the lists of tricks as something to look into after the coming gig. You are new here and many people falter a bit when learning the ropes. I've had some poor experiences with some here that I consider friends now. If you let it rest for a while it will all pass over. As a full-time professional close up performer, what I have learnt over the past twenty years is that your magic needs to be strong, but it's MORE IMPORTANT how you make people feel.
As a young man learning the ropes, looking back I realise that my performances were all about me... Look at me, look how clever I am. There was minimal audience interaction, and I used the typical cheesy magicians lines which were smarmy put-downs which I heard frequently delivered at various magic clubs where non- performing magicians would frequently laugh at! What makes your magic different and special is YOU and how you make your audience feel. Although I know and can perform hundreds of tricks, there are probably around 10 that are my go-to routines which have been tried a tested. My advice would be to put together three sets of three effects each. And make sure you are super confident in performing these, technically yes, but more importantly how you engage with your audience with these routines. Personally, I think performing magic to real punters should be a bit like having a meal - balanced. Rather then having card trick after card trick, I will have a mixture of different magical genres - for example, cards, coins, mentalism. Finally, one massive tip is to remember people's names, and use them throughout your performance. Good luck, hope it goes well.

Well, Mary and simplymagicweb, I can understand your thinking. Sorry, but, I have a good memory, for a guy my age.
You can be sure that I won't forget "DDs" attitude, not only because of the way he responded to cbguy, and, indirectly, to me, but, also because of his attitude, in general. I have "86d' him.

So, here is what MAYA ANGELOU (a "rather well known" poet) said: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." So! the jokes, and, the tricks, will be forgotten! --After 70 years of performing for paying audiences, I can attest to that. I can attest to the "...how you make them feel", also!

I just re-read this thread. With the exceptions of those who just "suggested" a list of tricks, there were some very worthwhile comments, which could help almost anyone "just starting", except, of course, Dirty Deak, who decided to spend his time, learning tricks (not principles!) from YOO TOOB.
That old "wise saying" on the wall, in the club rooms of the Showmens' League, in Chicago, "You cannot smarten up a chump." has been proven, again!"

You are looking for tricks that are simple to learn and easy to perform, with big impact. Off the top of my head, Eraser by Rick Lax is a pretty easy trick to do with great impact and lots of room for audience interaction. If you were to learn one easy one between now and then, this might be it.
I've had a good time with Deceit Treat lately. I taught this one to my daughter, who is just starting out in magic, and she was performing it competently in a weeks time. Again, mechanically pretty easy with room for audience interaction. Another suggestion is The Extractor by Peter Nardi. This is a bit expensive but the gimmick does practically all the work and you can perform as excellent seemingly impossible but simple routine using it. The Known by Thom Peterson is also a simple yet strong effect that can be learned fairly easily. A nice prediction effect that resets quickly and has good impact. Monkey in the Middle by Magick Balay is also one you could quickly learn if you have even moderate card handling ability. One simple sleight that you may already know for a strong sandwich effect. Also, a gimmicked bill effect like Bill Breaker by Bizzaro could be something that is easily added. If you are a competent performer and know how to work a crowd, engage people and be entertaining, then these are a few tricks which you could pick up quickly. If you were to practice and perform these in the remaining weeks leading up to the event, you could add one or two of them. Of course, you would have to be willing to practice them, but I don't know you or how quickly you pick up routines, so how much practice you need is something only you could judge.
