Pendulums have fascinated me since I first held one in my hand...and felt it move of its own accord. I remember being so freaked that I nearly threw the thing across the room. There could simply be no other explanation for why that little weight moved in my hand even though me (being me) was certain I was doing nothing to make it move. That fascination led to the generation of three books of pendulum routines from Cassidy, Osterlind and other pendulum aficionados.
There is always the question: where do you point the spectator and their new found pendulum skills once they've learned how to handle a pendulum? I imagine Christopher Taylor had the same question in mind because he has come up with a perfect answer. The premise? Your spectator becomes a detective in a turn of the century murder investigation. The spectator is armed only with a pocket watch pendulum and a series of photos of the suspects and the victim. Why do I like this one? First: It's a utility effect. You can make it as spooky as you like. You can play it as a straight up murder mystery. You can have fun with it. I imagine the proper performer could also create something very comedic. You aren't locked into a set routine. I like that. In the package you get ornate photos of the victim as well as the suspects. The photos are lovely. You get a couple of special photos as well, a few envelopes and the pocket watch pendulum. There is also a link for profusely detailed instructions on everything from how to train your spectator to use a pendulum to each phase of the routine. In the end your spectator will pass the pendulum over each of the face down photos and THEY will find the killer. There is also an additional optional presentation where they have correctly 'guessed' the precise time of the murder...inside a sealed envelope. Christopher has come up with a method for 'helping' your spectator 'find' the murderer's photo that is surefire. I like that too. I get a lot of pendulum effects -- primarily because of those three books I've worked on. Most of them have been done before. But Penny Dreadful Detective is a fresh take on a presentation that will leave them scratching their heads and asking themselves that delicious question..."what IF it's real?" David

Penny Dreadful Detective provides a number of fantastic mentalist principles. I have blown people away with this effect. Its simplicity is simply amazing. If you do not own this effect you are missing a trick!
Taylor imagineering after sales support is outstanding, it was great to see the stand at Blackpool 2020. |

I’ll check out Chris’ offering, but I have to say that Sidney Friedman’s “Harmony” pendulum routine from his book “Mental High Notes” is the best pendulum routine I’ve ever come across. It’s absolutely beautiful. And actually, his book is the best mentalism book I’ve read in a decade. It’s extraordinary,

I just have to add, this is one of my all time favorites! I haven't been doing much lately in the way of mentalism, but just thinking about this has sparked my muse. I'll have to go to the park and find some people to blow away tomorrow.

I was just on Christopher's website. Penny is now offered in two sizes--closeup and parlour. (Notice the Brit "u"?)

I have received the kit, and it is very good. The pictures of the victim and suspects are excellent, and the watch-pendulum is very classy--exceeding my expectations.
Christopher gives us plenty of room to develop our own storyline and distinctive approach, and I am enjoying doing that. Wikipedia's article on the penny dreadful magazines of Victorian England was especially useful to my aging imagination. George |
