Now I'm confused about the meaning of this thread. For most of the mentioned hated types of card tricks, I can at least think of one version that is fantastic and mind blowing.

Dislike:
Gambler theme or skill effects w/o proper context (a 10 year old pseudo teaching "cheat" techniques, isn't "right"). Cheating theme. -if they bite, one of you is the "wrong" kind of person. Oops. Sandwich tricks...all of them! Hideous. -They're too "tight",suspect and unimpressive. Magician "wins". -Usually isn't funny to everybody. The need to do "down under deals". -It's presumptive, unless you really are a genius. Are you? Burglar or Royalty stories. -Too old tymee. 6 card repeat. -Let me see the cards at some point...oh, no I can't. clock tricks. -Too narrow a theme. Spelling, when no justification is given for "spelling".
It's not their senses that mislead, it's their assumptions.

Oil & Water - particularly when accompanied with the inane drivel of "do you remember your science teacher at school saying.....blah, blah, blah......".
Well I remember my Science Teacher very well - I had the massive hots for her! But had she actually ever started blabbering on about oil & water not mixing, I think my eyes would have glazed over nearly as quickly as when I see a magician perform their latest 20 phase routine (18 of which usually consist of an absolutely dire, unconvincing Elmsley Count). And before anyone refers to René Lavand and/or posts a link, please don't. I've already seen it. And his version made me want to stick pins in my eyes as well (I don't care if you "can't do it any slower" mate.....in fact, I wish he'd have done it a bloody sight quicker - so he could have moved on to something else more entertaining!). I'm also not into Ambitious Card IF the plot goes on. And on. And on. And when I see the 'Ambitious Card' (what an utterly ridiculous term) finally appear in a wallet, I could literally SCREAM! When will some magicians realise that these are two completely DIFFERENT effects? Finally, not an effect as such, but I hate seeing cards signed. To paraphrase Paul Gordon, "it destroys the beauty of the prop". But again, tell that to some magicians who seem to make it their goal in life to deploy a Sharpie at every given opportunity. "But you need to get cards signed for some card magic to be convincing". Really? Someone clearly never told Dai Vernon. End of rant.

From what I've seen, a performer only has to fart at The Magic Castle to get applause. They are a captive audience; paying to see magic.
Hardly some 21st Birthday or Stag Party in the UK; with the audience half sloshed and numerous distractions elsewhere. Or a Wedding - whereby you are fighting to get heard against the backdrop of a DJ banging out deafening music. So you putting up a couple of narcissistic clips of yourself trying to prove a point won't change my (nor possibly others) opinions.

Merc Man , Tommy Wonders one of the greatest magicians ever he was finishing his ambitious card appearing in the ring box. As with the wallet that you mention is a different ending. So what??
the routine is amazing and building to a brilliant climax. You already say that is boring if goes on and on. So it is an interesting twist.... Which rule (every rule can be abolished by someone who knows how and why) says that we must follow a plot in a strict way? Real art shines when someone surpass the basic rules. And what about signed cards? for me a signed card is more beautiful than a new one. So? You know, everything is so subjective n this thread, so you have to realize that when you don't like a plot is mainly a matter of taste, not an objective opinion. I dislike some plots but I realise that is just my taste! your personal subjective taste hates signed cards. But the audience see better magic in some cases with a signed card. Magic is not for you and your likes but mainly for the people who are watching. |

A signed card appearing in a wallet suggests to anyone with half a braincell that you've 'palmed it in there somehow'. Or even 'its a trick wallet'. Possibly even both. I've heard both comments on more than one occasion when working with other magicians.
Or do you really think people believe in real magic? Maybe folk in the UK just aren't as gullible as elsewhere. Their chosen card appearing unsigned, gives them another edge to ponder on. Just my thoughts. This thread started off asking for people's personal or individual dislikes. To this end, I take umbrage at others trying to tell (or indeed try to prove with video clips) that me, and others, are wrong.

I was offering mine in reply. I didn't mean to insult. Sorry, if you took it hurtfully. The Magic Castle is a lovely place to work, with excellent and usually friendly and receptive audiences. But because I work there doesn't mean I haven't worked for tough audiences as well... I started out as a street performer in New York City in the 1960's. I have worked strip joints, biker bars and carnivals as well as cruise ships and casinos. I have made a living entirely at magic my whole life. You may not agree with me about this trick, but I don't understand why you would disrespect me in that way. The Ambitious Card and Card in Envelope are two completely different effects. They are combined as Maskelyne and Devant said they should be. Narcissistic? Maybe self-promoting, but I don't see what is narcissistic. |

Whatever point you were making is better made without you being part of it. The Magic Castle is too good for you. I haven't seen a single trick performed well that I haven't enjoyed. I have seen very few poorly performed tricks that I have.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

The thread title is "What card plots can you not stand? "
This is an individual thing. Some people like pineapple on a pizza, some think it's awful. The point is people should be able to express what they don't like without being challenged by others. No one is saying your trick sucks. We all accept their are exceptions to every rule. But if I don't like something, it doesn't mean your version of it sucks, it just means I don't like it. And that's ok. It's your trick. Enjoy it. If you do a trick I don't like I'm not attacking you by saying I don't like it. That's what's narcissistic about "defending" a trick you do, in this instance. |

Having performing both, my experience says that the reactions are better with the signed card. The magician who goes out from his knowledge and he really understand his audience way of thinking , he can manipulate them into thinking realy weird things. this is the history of magic. |

As for the signed card to wallet, I think he has a point. It goes back to the whole top perfect theory. I watched AGT last night with my girlfriend where that guy claims to be a real life Sherlock Holmes *rolls eyes*. He actually pretended to deduce a random woman's name based of her body language. Seriously? Grfo here with that nonsense. My girlfriend just rolled her eyes and said "this is obviously set up." I can't stand Magic that is so over the top it just screams the method.
