Hey thanks 41, that's an old one but it was fairly popular and the name, "JumpManDu" was pretty catchy.
As to the lair, well, all I can say is that in my day (not that I was banking on it, but it was a nice by-product at times) magic can be a tremendous icebreaker and door opener...I will say no more. The best set to use is what works for you...I have sets from the big craftsman (Kuepers is a great guy and does really good work), the silver stuff and it was great. But I have also had the much cheaper stuff, like Johnson's, and been pretty happy with it...I mean, a beautiful girl is great, but a pretty girl is pretty great too. And the newer wave now is the replica Morgan stuff, and I tell'ya those coins can be as well done as anything sold by the big craftsman. A guy named, John Jurney has done that with some spectacular offerings, as both a craftsman and a pretty darn good magician. He can probably craft with silver just as well but uses replicas to help keep the prices low and affordable. That's some good lookin' out IMHO, and the work is stellar! Anyway, in the last couple of videos, I think I might've been using an old Johnson's coin, had it for years...I've loved that coin from the first day I got it. I'm in the northern NJ area, at least when I'm not anywhere else.

MB, I am with you. I do not own any of that high end stuff for the simple reason that back in the 90s I read the book the Millionaire Next Door...always ask myself...do I need this...was surprised that millionaire buy used cars....I do as well....changed my entire outlook. I would bet, and I am not a gambler because I am a sore loser, that there is not an audience in the world that would notice the difference or better to say, have any different reaction if you used anything else than the Johnson set. I moved to DC in 78 and after the first time I saw ring flight, I simply picked up a key wallet from a street vendor, some fishing line, and a round key gizmo from a hardware store and made my own for a few dollars. Used it for 25 years and fixed it from time to time.
I figured you for a north east guy...I am sure you crossed the Hudson and not on rare occasion. I lived in Newark for a period of time. Long story. When I was in High School read a Cool Million by Nathaniel West. I will never forget this line: "God knows how tired I am of using the insanity of Van Gogh and the adventures of Gauguin as canopeners." Let's face it, there are very few women who do not respond to levitating a dollar bill! |

41, I actually grew up in the Big City and worked there all my life, it's been quite an experience, good - better - best!
I can remember when people were buying all the silver stuff from the big craftsman like crazy, for crazy money too. I just kept thinking it was a lot, even though I could mostly afford it, but why I would often ask myself. Most of these sets usually did one thing. But they are baubles, and people like baubles...they shine! I know that silver feels good and looks good, but there is an alternative, not to mention that what's more important is what you do with the coins. Seriously, specs don't care, that's just the gosh-darn truth. I do have a few things, but have spent more time with the cheaper stuff and have been just as happy. But happily such is the option of choice, aka, "To each his own." I'm really just happy that there are levels of coins to match everyones pocketbook. Any y'know, my most favorite set of coins was done by hand by a friend here on the Café years ago, A 4 coin Morgan set, hand softened and aged with a perfectly matching shell...It's beautiful, but really I don't use it much. I find myself usually using some worn old Morgans my grandpa gave me, or some replica Morgans or some half dollars I'm very comfortable with. Anyway, I too like the simpler things as to magic, heck as to life itself. You seem to like those self-help books...Best one I ever read was "As a Man Thinketh" and "The Secret." Both changed my life.

I am familiar with As a Man Thinketh by James Allen and the Secret for which I have the DVD. I am more aligned with the Allen paradigm then Byrn's. Byrn's has more of a New Age quality to it. Interestingly, Hubbard who wrote Dianetics which evolved into Scientology was on to something which is closely related to Allen's thinking. Freud talked about the unconscious....feelings affect thought and subsequently behavior. Both Allen and Hubbard believed that thoughts precede feelings. What Scientology training was about initially as to do what was called "auditing," where the subject was hooked up to a device that measured skin resistance. The Auditor would ask questions...or read a list of words. For example..."Father, mother, brother, sister." The Auditor would look at the subjects response. If sweet increased there would be a movement of the needle indicating an emotional response to a word. Say it was mother...then the auditor would read a list of potential thoughts associated withe mother. This would go on and on trying to get to the root of how the subjects distorted thoughts affect behavior. They would eventually reach a state called "clear." The analogy to an old adding machine where you press the button and all the buttons clear. When clear...you were free of wrong thoughts. The ANA accused Hubbard of practicing medicine without a license. Hubbard than turned Scientology into a religion to escape potential prosecution. Hubbard died and that is how Scientology wound up becoming rather crazy. The original concept, though flawed, was actually in my opinion, right. There are practitioners today who do a form of this with a biofeedback device that measures the same thing.
What was the city of your youth? Let me ask you something. I have been teaching inner city kids and teens magic intermittently for many, many years. It is a combination of mentoring and character building. They have to signa Magician's Code contract. For years religious organizations gave me some help. Recently, I have gone directly to manufacturers to obtain effects wholesale. I am not interested in being a distributor or profit. I just get effects and either gift them to the kids or for the teenagers that work part-time, the wholesale price. What has changed over the years resulting in my changing the contract is the availability of downloads and DVDs. I had to make the kids understand that they were never permitted to share digital information purchased from those who develop effects. So, I may have five kids want to learn the same effect and they ask why I can't just download one. I explain that one day they may develop effects. How would they feel if people did that to them. They got the idea. Anyway, you have a lot of good stuff. Why don't you have your own site? Who is the person that owns the site? Do you wholesale any of your effects? I have never used "flipper" coins which I understand are weighted. Do you use them? |

Glad you got better back around to magic here, as all the "science of mind" stuff is a total different kind of magic, perhaps better for another forum...
Anyway here, I'm a NYC guy, and thanks for the good words on my work, glad you like it. I started on that website, first one to give me a chance, so I'm loyal to it. I have been asked many times as to other websites and given them real consideration at times, but always end up staying where I've always been...It's all just easier at this point, and if people really like your work, they'll find you no matter where you are. With that, I've had good response over the years and enjoy putting together the little packages, it's like I'm a whole production/publishing dept. Haven't done any wholesale work, just provide my work from package to plate. Seems to work well enough. I have had a flipper coin but never used it much, much more of a SOH guy than gaffs. The Gravity Flippers were the new rage a few years back and that's what Eric Jones used to great applause in his stellar work.

The owner of the site http://vinnymarini.com/ is none other than ... Vinny Marini. He has more information about himself on his site.
Flippers aren't "weighted" per-se - they work another way. Since you don't know how (or else you wouldn't be asking), I think it's best not to reveal. |

Darko - I always like a false expectation premise. Some fumbling/stiffness in the moves, but I appreciate this is a demo of an idea and not a polished routine.
I am wrestling with where such an effect might fit into a series of magic demonstrations - perhaps an ending to another C/S transportation As a "stand alone" effect it seems too much work for the result. Yet, your idea leads me to thinking of a more complex sequence with an actual C/S switch in the two hands. On the repeat attempt they disappear. Thanks for that!

I love copper silver routines, and have developed many of them. Here are a few of them:
The Substitution Trunk Mystery. Two versions, one with a card and one without, where a half dollar placed into an Okito Box switches places instantaneously with a visible english penny. Old version NYCMS dvd series, newest version on the At the Table lecture. Copper Silver Transposition using Stealth palm. On the NYCMS dvd series and At the Table lecture. Matchbox Treasury from the NYCMS dvd series. Copper and silver coins change places, then keep appearing in a matchbox. Copper or Silver Extraction, Copper Penetration, and Copper Silver in a spectator's hand. Old versions, one by Roth and one by myself on the NYCMS dvd series, and a new version using JW grip on the Penguin Live lecture 2. NYCMS dvd series vol 2,3,and 4 on Copper Silver. See great routines by Roth, Gallo, and Latta. Almost forgot to mention Oil and Water, newest version on the Penguin Live lecture 2.

Great list there, Doc.
And Darko my friend, I like that little set...That's pretty clever. I hope you keep building on it, because I think you got something there. I was always thinking as to C/S, if you used 2 C/S coins, one in each hand and make them change places back & forth the regular way the coins work...And then be able to give the 2 coins out or show that they are legit. Just how would one do that...Hmmmmm?

Marion, you migbt want to check out Kaps routine where he does just that, then after a faux explanation of having extra coins that he switches, he opens his hands to show 4 gold coins.

MB, you can't be a NYC guy. I like you.
All kidding aside, I bet there are many of us from "small town USA (or wherever)" Who would have loved to grow up around "The magic scene". I was fortunate to hang out a lot in Minneapolis / St Paul with a decent "group" of magicians that were always up for a session. Around here, where I live now... Not so much. The nearest (what I would call an "active" group) is a 75+ mile trek for me. I still may eventually start making the drive once a month to their meetings. To have been in either New York, Chicago or LA (at the Castle) during the golden years would have been awesome. Given my choice though, I really think I would have chosen Chicago.

OK Doc, yeah I remember seeing that one from Kaps...Nice take on it.
And yeah PD, I'm a City guy, born in the south and raised in the north, but in NJ now for the last 25yrs. Lot of good magic in the City area, you can see the big, small and all of them depending where you go from the streets to the stage. It really is quite an amazing place...Still is as to magic and a lot of other interesting things..

Not to derail the thread, but it was fun here in NYC back in the 80s. I was here in the summers, and would go to the Saturday magician hangout, then at a deli on Madison Ave and 38th street. You would walk in and see Sol Stone and Gerald Deutch having lunch, then enter the back room. At one table would be Harry Lorrayne, Ken Krenzel, Bob Elliott, and Gene Maze. At another was Mike Gallo, Geoff Latta, Richard Kaufman, and sometimes David Roth. Bob McAllister would come by on roller skates. At other tables you could find Jon Townsend, David Regal, Eric DeCamps, Derek Dingle, and so many other guys you may not know, like Lenny Greenfeder, Rene Clement, Fred Baumann, and others. Great times with friends and magic.

Yeah Doc, I used to hear of those great weekend get-togethers. Just to have been a fly on the wall would've been good enough for me. At least I got to catch guys like Earl "Presto" Johnson up at the Apollo Theater, out in front and then inside on that famous stage. He was something to see, quite a performer and a miracle of a closeup magician
Also, I remember seeing Chris Capehart in the uptown subways, and in later years down by NYU. I would miss class to watch him work...He was that amazing holding a crowd mesmerized there on the streets! I saw a lot of others, many on Saturdays down at Tannen's Magic Shop, near Times Square. Man, those were days.

I saw Craig Petty perform an excellent Copper /Silver routine on Monday evening at a lecture that was very good, both coins are borrowed ie no extras are used it's multi phased and finishes with a transpo in the spectators hands.
For those interested I'm sure he said it's going to be on his soon to be released At The Table Lecture. |

Thanks Warren. Glad you liked it. I also published it on Dave And Craig Hit The Road a few years ago (which also happens to have my colour changing deck routine - the best card trick I ever created!!)
