First, I've been waiting for this for a long time-- Elliott's first major "post-switchcraft" release.
I couldn't be more surprised or delighted to discover that it's devoted to Practical Spooky Effects! I know there will be discussion in the Switchcraft thread about this but it's my feeling PSEV1 deserves a thread of its own. The title says it all-- these are Practical and Spooky Effects which build on the foundation of the work in Switchcraft. Volume one highlights "slate effect" using blank and business card and offers a huge variety of techniques and approaches. Like Switchcraft Elliott leaves it up to the performer to determine what that spook appearing message may be but if you have a single business card you have an amazing effect you can perform. Again-- most of you will know many of the methods discussed, and if you're a student of the late Mssers Burger and Cassidy, you have been using them for a while-- however this a tremendous resource bringing together classic, updated and new methods pulled together at your finger tips... it's a huge pool of inspiration. thanks Elliott! can't wait for Vol. 2! Best dave

Thank you so much pacozaa.
Kuroth, sorry I was a little lax in formally announcing this, or making it 100% clear how to get it. A major family event came up, and I have been dedicating almost all of my time to it. "Practical Spooky Effects Volume 1" is the 9th supplement I sent to the people who generously bought Mind Blasters USA from me. It is huge, took about 5 months to write, and is my favorite of all my supplements to both Switchcraft and MB USA. It has tons of content and many videos. It is also part one out of several planned volumes. But it is very much a niche topic, so I am trying to get a sense of whether there is sufficient interest before continuing the work. If people aren't really into the spooky stuff, or don't like my approach to things, I can always switch back to billets and impromptu mentalism. A bunch of people requested that I create a new product to make my MB USA supplements available to those who may have bought MB USA from one of the other authors. The new product is called: International Manual of Mystery The price is $9.95 Here's where you can get it: https://sites.google.com/site/manualofmystery/ Anyone who buys International Manual of Mystery within a set period of time, gets an extra bonus e-book. See details on the web site. Practical Spooky Effects includes the following topics: How to Present Spirit Writing What Sort of Message Should Be Written? Handwriting How to reveal the information? Thanks Elliott.. I am very excited about your "spooky stuff" and hope you will continue with it.. You have my Vote..
I was confused about all the different eBooks and what was what, but now I got it. Later this week (When I get paid) I will get the Mind Blasters USA from your web site to get all the bonuses you are offering. Sounds like the best deal and best way to get your Practical Spooky Effects Vol 1.

Manual of Mystery and Switchcraft are very much complementary. If you have one, you'll want the other too.

I should mention that there is only 1 day left to get the bonus e-book "Pipe Dreams or the Next Big Thing?" with your order of International Manual of Mystery

Just a few more hours until the clock strikes 12.
Although, in all honesty, I am not staying up until midnight to take down the bonus e-book. I will probably do it sometime tomorrow evening, and it will do it in this order to ensure there are no misunderstandings or bad feelings. 1. Announce that it is down on this thread. 2. Remove mention of it from the website. 3. Remove it from my server or something like that. |

Bonus e-book has been removed, as promised.

While I opted for the full Mind Blasters, the Practical Spooky Effects supplement is well worth the price of the at least the Manual of Mystery if not the full Mind Blasters book. The expanded spirit writing with business cards is by far my favorite section right now. Very simple moves and great ways to communicate with the beyond anywhere you go. Absolutely fantastic book so far!

I have been slowly working on several sequels to Practical Spooky Effects.
Practical Spooky Effects Volume Two is planned for my MB USA list, and also for my "International Manual of Mystery" list. Practical Spooky Effects Volume Three is planned for Switchcraft. I am also working on "Pipe Dreams or the Next Big Thing - Volume 2". It is almost done. As usual, no promises. That being said, I have a pretty good track record with these supplements. Elliott |

Elliott is possibly the most generous author and creator in this field. Certainly the most value for dollar I've ever had comes from Switchcraft.
Full disclosure: he gave me a copy of Practical Spooky Effects. I felt odd reviewing it here when it was a gift, so I want to make it clear that I'm reviewing it to encourage others to get it, not just to give props to Elliott. If you want to show anywhere from two to a hundred cards as completely blank, then have writing appear on them, Elliott has the method for you. Not a lot of routines. None, really, but every sort of method I can imagine there being to show your cards blank on both sides, then show writing had appeared on one or more (up to 99 of them, if you use 100!). A lot of Practical Spooky 1 is spirit slate moves with cards instead of chalkboards or moves that emulate spirit slate moves, even if they are only practical with cards (in some cases). If you have Switchcraft, you know that what Elliott is great at is every feasible option for doing a move. If there is any reason at all to make writing appear on the back of a card, you will have methods for every conceivable occasion with this book. (I grabbed a graphic of a Ouija board off the internet and printed up my own cards. Feel free to run with that idea if it appeals to you.) Elliott's work tends to balance out some of the other material I've seen or re-seen recently, which is very heavy on performance and gives one method. He doesn't do a lot of performance suggestions (at least in Practical Spooky 1), but sets you up so if you have the creativity to present a piece, you will now have all the methods you could desire. In short, if you want a toolbox to do a very specific thing, get this. If you want a dozen routines and one tool, this isn't for you. I find more utility from a toolbox and remain grateful to Elliott for this e-book. -Patrick edited to correct grammar and clarify one sentence that was ambiguously worded |

Elliot was kind enough to share a copy of this with me, and I think it's only fair that in exchange for his hard work and time that I to put in some time and effort by talking about it in a public forum. The challenge then, is what can I say that hasn't already been posted in the comments above. It is a toolbox, but in a world of Harbor Freight tools, it's a Snap On.
Instead of rewriting what has already been said about PSE v. 1, I thought I would do something a little different. Upon completing my first read through, I came up with two routines that went straight into practice and performance. One routine ties nicely into my Seance show and the other helps to make for a nice opener to my ghost story show. Here is my presentation for my ghost story opener, for the method, you'll want to check out Practical Spooky Effects. I like to use a fairly known story as my opener to help establish expectations, and to allow people to get familiar with my western PA accent, your millage may vary. I have always been a fan of scary stories. New stories, old stories, they are all entertaining to me. I love the tingle of the shiver that goes down your spine, the feeling of the hair raising on the back of your neck, or the way your heart skips a beat at the climax of the horror. As the story progresses, I start to question myself, did I really hear that? Did I imagine it? Should I go check it out? Our warm up story is a popular tale, you probably have heard it; some of you may have even told it. The year was 1954. It was a warm October evening, and the movie just ended at the drive-in. Our young couple pulled out and made their way to lovers lane. The leaves were changing colors and Lois was going on about the beautiful scenery shining off the headlights. - Ma'am, do you mind helping me, you will play the part of Lois. Please, have a seat right here.- They drove along listening to the radio. "Secret Lover" by Doris Day came on, this was Lois's favorite song, so she cranked up the volume. Johnny was not having that. - You sir, you are a dead ringer for Johnny, please, have a seat next to our Lois. Oh, you know what, we need a car, hmm... here, lets use these two cards. Johnny, please hold out your hand, we will place these cards in your hand, and Lois, will place your hand on top of the cards? Thank you. Perfect. - Now, back to our tale. Johnny was not a fan of the mushy Doris Day song and started surfing channels. Bill Haley came on with "Shake, Rattle, and Role". Now that was a song he could get behind. Just as he started to sing along, the song was cut short. The radio announcer broke in with a news bulletin. "A man being referred to only as Hook Man by authorities has from Westgate Pennitentary. Hook Man has been convicted of five murders and remains a suspect in several others. People in the region are warned to keep watch and report anything suspicious." Johnny joked to Doris, "Maybe we can pick him up and give him a ride." Lois smacked him, and said "Don't joke about that, it isn't funny." "It's okay," he said, "it's probably just a prank for Halloween. Besides, we are here and I don't see anyone around." Lois cuddled close to Johnny, a little nervous, but started to relax. Johnny changed the station and they kissed to the sound of romantic music on the radio. Then another announcer came on and repeated the warning of Hook Man. "An insane killer with a hook in place of his right hand is loose in the area." Suddenly, the dark, moonless night didn't seem so romantic to Lois, and the realization they were the only car parked that evening started to steal her attention. The lover's lane was secluded and off the beaten track. A perfect spot for a deranged mad-man to lurk, she thought, pushing Johnny away. "Maybe we should get out of here," Lois said. "That Hook Man sounds dangerous." "Awe, c'mon babe, it's nothing," Johnny said, trying to get in another kiss. "No, really. We're all alone out here. There aren't any other cars here. I'm scared," Lois said as she pushed him back. They argued for a moment. Then the car shook a bit, as if something…or someone…had touched it. She gave a shriek and screamed: "Get us out of here NOW!" "Jeeze," Johnny said in disgust. He turned the key and went roaring out of the lover's lane with a screeching of his tires. They drove home in stony silence, and when they pulled into Lois's driveway, Johnny refused to help her out of the car. He was being so unreasonable, Lois fumed to herself. She opened the door indignantly and stepped into her driveway with her chin up and her lips set. Whirling around, she slammed the door as hard as she could. And then she screamed. Johnny leapt out of the car and caught her in his arms. "What is it? What's wrong?" he shouted. Then he saw it. - Did either of you feel anything weird happen to your car? Pull your hands apart and open your car doors, yes, just spread the cards apart. - (obviously, there is a hook on the back of one of the cards.) Hope you enjoyed, Bradley |
