Have you ever experienced this sad moment when you took a too little pinky break and lose it xD?
I was wondering what you usually do? Personally, I turn over the first card pretending that it should be their and I missed my trick (which is rather true in fact ) and then I ask them what their card was and go through the deck (only I can see the cards) and when I see their card I say 'I can't find it are you sure bla bla...'. Then I cut their card to the top using the misdirection, top palm it and load in my back pocket showing them the deck and once they examined the deck show them it was in my pocket... |

Your question gives me another chance to give a heads up on one of my favorite books in card magic - "Outs Precautions And Challenges (For Ambitious Card Workers)" by Charles H. Hopkins.
It is not a book of tricks, but rather talks about an approach to card magic that, with a little forethought and a change of mindset, prepares you for the times a spectator screws you up ("Hey, let me shuffle those!") or when you make a mistake...like losing the break...and still stick the landing without the spectator ever knowing you were it trouble. And, like in your solution, you always finish the trick, even if it is not the one you started. Hopkins addresses your question as well as other common ones like when you ask the spectator to name his card and he refuses...what to do when you lose control of a card and have no idea what/where it is, as well as when there is a complete train wreck and your final revelation is wrong. It was written 75 years ago so it looks and reads a bit dated, but it is filled with great ideas for common moves and gaffs that make you “spectator proof”. I’ve always thought it should be required reading for anyone starting out in card magic. It's available on Ebay, Amazon and I think Penguin sells a reprint...best $6 you’ll spend. |

I tend to ask them what their card was whilst 'trying to find it' secretly culling it to the top and then palm it off and say it has vanished or go into another routine and bring it back later on.
