David Mead, the mentalist, performed a routine at TEDxStormount about innovation. Basically he started of with a square jigsaw with a template that fitted precisely over it. Mead then restructured the jigsaw and in the process added an extra piece to the jigsaw, it remained a square and the template again fitted over it. Once more he deconstructed the square, moved bits and pieces about added another piece, again it formed a square and again the template fitted over it.
I have a reasonable idea how the routine is done but wonder what the prop is called. Can anyone help. You can see a YouTube video HERE |

Merlins Elixor is the name of the version I have. I believe I purchased it from Stevens Magic Emporium. There is a stage version that used to be available. Very neat effect and fun to perform.

It was invented by Winston Freer and can be found in The Magic Nook's Mini-Mysteries Book 1 as "Winston Freer's Tile Deal Puzzle" with instructions on how to make one out of cardboard or wood.
