Rope was kind of expensive in 1584, when Reginald Scot wrote the Discoverie of Witchcraft, but the tricks he reveals that were performed with cords or string went on to become rope tricks using the same basic principles.

Check out the Magic Café section called "Knots and loops" that is in the "Stage, Platform and Parlor" subsection that is about 10 green boxes below this "New to Magic" section of the café. There is a lot of good info there. This forum can be overwhelming to new users because there are so many many different sections, each devoted to a different area of magic. A great tool is the search box. Typing "best rope trick" or "favorite rope trick" or "easiest rope trick" will find specific posts that apply directly to what you are interested in.
Have fun exploring!!!! |

I apologize.... I misread your question. You want to know about the history of rope magic. In that case you would want to check out the café section "Everything is Old Again" that is under the subheading of "A Family Tradition" that is located about 19 green boxes below "New to Magic". You can also try the search engine.
Like I said above, there are a lot of subsections on this board Good luck with your research!! |

Hello Starting Out~
I'm happy to note that you are interested in the history of the craft! --Far too many beginners are only interested in TRICKS! Those who don't study history, are "condemned" to repeat it! "Those who think that magic consists of doing tricks, are strangers to magic. Tricks are only the crude residue from which the lifeblood of magic has been drained." --S.H. Sharpe Don't be afraid to continue to ask questions! The only "dumb" question is the one that you didn't ask!!!!!!!!!! However, there is an old Latin proverb that you must keep in mind: "Nemo dat quod non habet!" (No one can give what he does not have!) There are 60,000 "diners" in the Café. Some "...think that magic consists of doing tricks..." I would suggest that you do some more reading. The original Tarbell Course (1927) is available free on "pdf". The patter and presentations are archaic, but the PRINCIPLES are "there". Doc Tarbell "invented" the Tarbell C&R rope trick, back then, and even managed to mystify a "few" magicians! Abbott's published, eons ago, the "Encycopedia of Rope Tricks". If you have a special interest in tricks with rope, you may find it worth your time! Archaeologists have found primitive rope used by our ancestors, EONS ago. Scot's "Discovery of Witchcraft" (500 years ago) had a few rope tricks! (I do a few of them!)

Thank you for the reply Dick, appreciated.
So true. Reading up on the arts history gives a better insight, and not forget our fore-fathers of magic. Only been a member of my local Magic Circle since February this year, 8 month prior to that just learning slights palming etc. Now out doing various small venues. LOL wished done this years ago, trying to cram in so much for lost time |

Dick's response should be a sticky, everyone who joins the Magic Café should have to read it to get in.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Probably the first fascination with rope for early magicians, was the various ways knots could be tied in it. We start our Wiz Kids out by teaching them a complete routine performed with a single length of rope and various knots:
Catching a Knot Sliding Knot Slip Knot Slippery Knot Bow Knot Lotsa Knots Impossible Knot This routine, plus others that go beyond knots into more advanced rope magic, can be seen on The Wiz Kids Rope Magic DVD available from them HERE: http://wizkidzinc.com/DVDs/rope01/wizkidsROPE01.htm Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki learned all of that in his first year as a Wiz Kid, and then went on to create his own rope routines by his third year as a Wiz Kid. It's available as an e-Book in his own Corner of the Magic Nook under the name "Super Hero Rope Routine." http://magicnook.com/Qua-FikiCorner/QF02-04RopeRoutine.htm

Thanks Jim but moving away from the subject as not looking for how to do rope tricks but more on the history.
I am quite conversant with ropes, as have my own routines taken ideas from Sanders Fiber Optics, Darlys rope magic, Michael Finney, also Colombini ringing around. Thanks |
