Dear Magicians,
I'd like to create a collection of colorful vintage jokers (the kind with harlequins and jesters in body-suits, often holding a stick with a jester-head at the top, wearing a three-horned hat, and up to zany antics) that I can use in my card tricks. Bicycle decks show a King riding a bicycle, which is cute but not what I want, and Tally Ho show a gentleman horseman, which doesn't appeal to me. There are lots of cards of the sort that I like on eBay, but the problem is that they're bridge-sized, whereas I want to use Poker-sized. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest an easy way that I could incorporate bridge-sized jokers into poker-sized cards. I'm not handy, so I would need a really easy method, or a suggestion of who might do the work for me. I could glue a bridge-sized joker to a blank poker card, but then I'd have a sort of gaffed thick card (or at least partially thick). Or I could scan the bridge sized card and print the image onto a blank poker card, but, from what I've read on other threads, the ink would smear unless I first removed the coating from the blank card. (And then reappied the coating after printing, I guess.) Another solution would be to try to find the kind of joker I like in poker size, but I haven't seen such a thing for sale. And even then I'd have to glue a bicycle back to the original back if I wanted to use a bicycle deck for an effect, thus creating a thick card. I'd love to hear people's ideas of how to proceed. Thanks, Bob |

P. S. I'd also be happy with modern cards that were in the old style that I described, especially if they were bikes or tally-ho. Bicycle used to have a deck that consisted of nothing but jokers, but it seems to have been discontinued, and I don't know what the jokers looked like.

I think the best approach is to make a high quality scan and use it as the artwork for the face of the card at a custom card maker such as Card Shark.
I' think it will be the easiest and have the best result. |

You have to steam-off the Joker-Layer and affix it to a steamed-off Bike-back. Lotta work.

Thanks, LesL. I was aware of that deck, but Bicycle doesn't produce it anymore. Do you happen to have the deck? I was curious what the designs look like. Do any of them fit the description I gave? If so, I'll look for the deck on eBay.

The joker deck is currently available on Art of play (as far as I'm aware)

Saw it on Amazon last nite. YouTube reviews show joker designs but all 52 different pips. Not exactly what you are looking for but might give you a head start.

Huh! You're right, LesL. I've discovered that this deck has special backs, whereas I want jokers with Bicycle rider backs to use with my regular decks. And I haven't been able to find pictures of what the jokers in this deck look like. Still, if I can't arrive at another solutions, I suppose I could just glue these jokers to rider backs.
Thanks again. |

I reckon your only option (for a workable deck) is to get a pack of blank faced Bicycle poker cards modified. I suggest you contact Bernd Maucksch (email below) who would understand the technical implications and may be able to do it for you. It would not be cheap!

I again, Chris and Darko,
I did contact Bernd, and he agreed to adapt the jokers to Poker size. I sent him the images and told him what I wanted, he sent me preliminary adaptations to Poker cards, and I asked for a few changes. He's now going to make the card. I left him a lot of latitude to make decisions because it quickly became clear that he has a good artistic sense. He's great to work with. So, I'm excitedly waiting for the jokers once he has time to make the cards and send them to me. All of which is to say: thank you for recommending him! Bob |

Really glad to hear that - the Café community is a fantastic resource for answering obscure questions. I must admit when I first read your post I thought the man is mad!
Hope the effort bears fruit..... |

Ha! Well, I dunno if I'm mad or not. For me there's something evocative about the more old-fashioned harlequin/jester jokers. In case it might change your evaluation of my sanity, I'll tell you why I wanted jokers that pleased me. Although I want to use the jokers in a variety of ways, my initial impetus was to use it in Color Monte. I'm changing the story a bit to be a (fictionalized) account of a trip the the Illinois State Fair when I was a kid. A guy approaches me, we play the game, and, at the end, when he says that I owe him $14, I say that he took pity on me when he saw the look on my face, and he says, "Ah don't worry, son, it was just a joke." And he shows me the third card, which shows a cute little joker laughing his head off.
So there you go, Chris. Thanks for contributing. You're right about the magic Café -- it's great, nearly as addictive as magic itself. |
