Check out "Rose Colored Glasses" for Southern CA (Orange County) fires! In North CA, there is massive devastation. (0% contained after 2 days, 1500 homes lost, 11 deaths, 150 missing, 100's of businesses including wineries, no power, 2 hospitals evacuated, smoke haze and ash drifting 100s of miles south, etc). Much of Santa Rosa looks like a post-war ghost town. This is effecting Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Counties and beyond. The smoke has blotted out the sun here in Albany, 54 miles south of the fire. Are people receiving news of all this in other parts of the country (I occasionally see some news crawl on CNN)? Lynn

I’m in the OC and this is the first I’ve heard of this devastation. I’m gonna go dig around.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

We're under mandatory evacuation in OC and in a hotel, but hopefully getting home tonight or tomorrow.

I live in Sebastopol Ca., a small town just west of Santa Rosa. I work in a hospital that is handling the ER patients that would normally go to the two that have been evacuated. Our Med/Surg unit is full to capacity as well. Local grocery stores have donated food and water. We're working 'round the clock with all hands on deck!
Sebastopol seems to be ok, but the wind can change at any minute. The smoke is extremely toxic and folks are advised to stay indoors as much as possible. It's literally minute by minute here, however, it's a blessing to be able to help! My wife has family in Santa Rosa and Sonoma/Glen Ellen. So far everyone is alright. The OP is correct in their assessment of what it looks like around here. I've lived in the North Bay for 12 years and nothing remotely similar to this has ever happened. We're a mess up here and (as also stated) the percentage of containment is still low. I personally know five different families who have lost everything. If that doesn't change you, what could? What breaks my heart is the defenseless creatures who have unfortunately found themselves in harms way. We have an animal kingdom (sanctuary) up here that will take any animal that needs a safe place to be. This man is saving all the animals and at the same time is dealing with the loss of his home. The outpouring of love and support is amazing. Those who can help are bending over backward for those in need. We'll get through this, but we're still not outta the woods (pun intended). Thanks for letting me ramble. . . Jorey

Well done Sir and yes it blessing to be able to help. I mean, I do wish I could do or say something more helpful when these tragedies happen, than just feeling sorry for the people and wishing them luck. It seems to be one terrible thing after another in the USA recently.

In a country of over 300 million something bad is always happening somewhere.
California folks please be careful. Fire is such a scary phenomenon. I can not imagine being in the path. Be well all.

I personally helped Tom move from the East Bay over to this neck of the woods a few years ago. I do know the extent of what was in there.
I'm so sorry, Tom. Keep me posted, my friend! Just listening to the news: 500 people still missing, fires still burning, etc. This situation is far from over!

I'm not personally involved, and can not imagine it happening.

It's a ******* miracle. After two days of sitting in stunned shock looking for a definitive answer, not being able to drive there, seeing pictures of the neighborhood completely desimated and hearing of a couple industrial wineries which survived, I finally found an aerial video of my storage building. ITS STILL THERE!!! 50 yards from complete and utter destruction of an entire community. I'm literally trembling with tears in my eyes.

My wife taught school in Santa Rosa. Some friends of hers have lost their homes, some have been spared. The firestorm continues, having difficulty burning itself out, since winds continue to exacerbate the situation. 27 now dead, and hundreds missing! Calistoga and even Fairfield are being urged to evacuate. Very glad, (Tom), to hear one of our Café have survived (albeit perhaps with a bit of PTSD). Donations can be sent via Red Cross. Lynn

I just got a text from Lobo that he, Maureen, and their pooch are safely back home.
Another blessing. |

In 1983 we were living in Anaheim Hills, right where the Canyon Fire was burning two days ago. The brush fire then was burning right across the street from our home; luckily, we were spared. In 2008 we were in our current home in Yorba Linda when a fire that started to the East of us spread West to Yorba Linda. We'd been at the optometrist when my wife said that she smelled smoke; we walked outside to see that it was coming from the direction of our home. When we arrived home, the hills just to the North of us were on fire. As I packed up the dogs, cats, computers, and important papers, our neighbor's palm tree caught fire and was dropping burning fronds onto our cars. The three-mile drive out La Palma Avenue took us 90 minutes; while we were stopped on the street, we got to watch 60-foot tall flames in the Santa Ana riverbed less than 100 feet from the cars (and me in a ragtop Honda S2000). We stayed with some friends for three days, not knowing whether we had a home to which to return. Fortunately, the fire missed most of our neighborhood (only one home had any significant damage), but scores of homes up the hill from us were destroyed, including the home of our older son's best friend in high school. I'm so glad to hear that you're safe, and that your storage building was spared. I wish you the best in rebuilding. I cannot imagine having to do that myself. |

Tom, that's exceptionally good news.
If y'all remember, about three years ago I was seriously considering trying to move to Sebastapol myself, so that area is much on my mind and in my prayers. Everyone please stay safe. |
