Konjurer....
Who is the dealer, if you don’t mind telling, that you ordered your machine from? Even though, as my contact at the factory has told me, they are getting about 2 dozen a week out of the door, I have not yet had my delivery announced (despite my being #8 on his list. VERY frustration (especially since I was initially promised a delivery no later than the 2nd week in Feb....) |

I received my dealer’s notification that my machine is on the way to his shop and I should receive it very soon after that. I am beyond excited. I will report on game play when I get it unpacked, dialed-in and set up.

My dealer, Great American Pinball out of Chicago, originally told be January but it was 2 months later. I know the factory had some issues to iron out so they got several weeks behind schedule. They did a great job of integrating Houdini's illusions and escapes, jailbreaks, and silent movies. The music is fabulous! It is beyond fun! Anyone in Eastern Iowa is welcome to contact me to stop by and play some Houdini!

What do you have Extra Ball set at?

Currently set to 200,000 but I'm feeling like that is too low. I think the default was 500,000. I've found you can earn extra ball doing the Card Scaling mode. If you hit 4 small targets you'll be awarded an extra ball.
I'm hoping that the programmer will add a setting to allow more time on the modes. The mode countdown is pretty fast for average player like me.

I’ve been collecting pins off and on for about the last 20 years. I just got my Houdini pinball machine last week. Is a great addition to the collection which includes Theater of Magic among others. If you’re interested in purchasing one I recommend working through Pinballstar. They are a fantastic dealer and I’ved purchased a number of games from them not only Houdini by American Pinball but also a number of other machines made by Jersey Jack Pinball.

Otherwise you will just count on the Extra like an included ball in your game so it becomes a 4 ball game instead of a 3 ball game. UNLESS you have it set to a 5 ball game. Remember those days? I know what you mean by the mode countdown being to short.

My personal Houdini pinball arrived today and was a snap to set-up (although it is REALLY heavy!) I have been waiting for a LONG time and my patience was tested more than once.
It is more beautiful than I could have imagined it would be. The design, layout, lights and gameplay are wonderful. It is, however (for me) VERY difficult to play. The shots are tight and learning the rules and sequences is complicated. That, however, allows for a game that keeps your interest for a long time. There is so much complexity to explore and code updates will add even more I am told. I am just a novice playing it now - but having a machine in my very own home that is set on Free Play is fabulous. Rhett |

Since they've advertised that the Houdini machine will be there...
The Midwest Gaming Classic is a weekend convention with HUNDREDS of pinball machines (and hundreds of cabinet arcade games, plus board games, a vintage computer game museum, and more) on Apr 13-15 in Milwaukee. Everything is set on free play. It's pretty staggering. I went last year with my wife, and she's now hooked on pinball. https://www.midwestgamingclassic.com/ |

Houdini is $7,000 plus shipping adds another $200. It's a lot of money but wow, what a fabulous piece of art and it's built like a tank (300 lbs). Your family will enjoy for years. Pinball machines are not an investment but they retain much of their value if cared for.
Modern pinball machines start at around $5,500 discounted from MSRP. A Stern Aerosmith or Iron Maiden probably can be bought for under $6K. Jersey Jack Pinball machines are the BMW of the pinball world and start at $8,000. Houdini by American Pinball is a great deal at $7,000.

I was thinking today. I've been doing magic for much longer than pinball but learning pinball is a lot like learning a new sleight. There are some basic moves that are in every card magician's tool belt such as double undercut, Elmsley Count and a great DL. Pinball is similar in that you really need to learn the basic moves:
Ball control - don't flap the flippers like a trained seal. Capture the ball and take a purposeful shot Cradling the ball - is keeping the button pressed to capture the ball in the crook of the flipper. This allows you to take a well aimed shot. Over time, your ability to hit shots accurately increases. Dead Flip - you don't have to always hit the ball. Letting the ball bounce off of the "dead" flipper takes some bravery at first but it is one of the easiest ways to get the ball under control. Backhand Shot. New players tend to use the left flipper to hit shots on the right side of the play field - and vice versa. However most shots on the playfield can be hit with either flipper. Backhand is when you capture the ball and hit the shot early as it rolls down the flipper. Left flip to the left targets and Right flip to the right side. Post transfer. Is when you cradle the ball on one flipper and pass the ball over to the other flipper by bouncing the ball off the bottom of the sling shot.

Yes, you are getting it. I used to do all of those pin-sleights some time ago just never knew they had names.
There is also bumping the machine just enough and in the right way to get a teetering ball to roll the direction you want, being careful not to Tilt. Although I turned the tilt off on my own machines.

To anyone who owns the new Houdini pinball machine: what's been your experience with the catapult? I've heard that it sometimes, even often, misses (even if it's been tweaked in the control panel). This has me a little reluctant to invest.
Thank you, Josh |

I have the Houdini - I made one adjustment to the voltage to the coil for the "trunk shot" and I would say I am 99% accurate - in the most exciting shot in modern pinball (IMHO.)
