After finishing supper and relaxing with the cats awhile, Laurie retrieved her guitar and the race was on! Black streaks shredded the track that was the Magic Café.

The magicats, however, didn't let the muley cow stop them. They continued unobstructed until magicatastrophically triggering an avalanche at the woodpile. Fireplace tools and scraps of wood scattered with fantastic crashing, rivaling the din of the intensifying storm outside.

Laurie returned her guitar to its resting place under the table, and proceeded to tidy the rubble. She swept up some shavings and shattered kindling, and tossed them on the fire. They lit up with an astonishing woosh that caught the attention of even the few straggling patrons at the other end of the dining room.

Magicalaurie set about rebuilding the woodpile.

After a while, magicalaurie picked up the last fallen woodblock and set it on the fire. Returning to her booth, she lifted the guitar gently and played a quiet lullaby. The cats began to settle in for the night.

Laurie awoke to a brilliant flash of lightning tearing through the night sky. Thunder shook the walls. The fast burning woodblock had diminished considerably and the fire was fading. There was a noticeable chill in the place. As her eyes adjusted, she realized the power had gone out after all. Another bright flash and Laurie readily noticed there were cats missing. Three.

"Irish... Magic...Kuuipo. Girls. Irish?"

No response. The two youngest and the guardian. If she could find Kuuipo she'd likely find the other two. And vice versa. Likely, the storm had spooked Magic. Or not. They might have run off playing somewhere. Unusual for Irish to be gone, though.

Laurie found her keys and opened the seat cabinet opposite the one she'd visited earlier. Along with a small flashlight, she pulled out a battery-lit tealight lantern box. She set them on the table and closed and locked the cabinet door. She turned on the light in the lantern box and slid it to the center of the table.

Scanning the remaining cats, she saw they were quiet. Laurie grabbed the flashlight and was gone.

A few sets of heavy footsteps sounded near the booth. The cats awoke and looked interestedly toward the footfalls.

Someone peered into the booth.

"I don't think she's here."

"Maybe she's in the bathroom. The cats are here. Hi there, Kitty. What you got there?"

Sweetypie dropped the item, hissed, and ran away. The corner of the tapestry flipped up as she went. A stash of items slid across the hardwood."

"Ha! Look at all this!"

"I don't see any keys."

"What do you mean?"

"For the doors."

"What doors?"

"Hey guys, I thought we came back here to check on things."

"Yeah. And we are."

"Hey. I see what you mean. Look at these. What is that?"

"Look at all that stuff under the mat."

The stash was eclectic: pens, mahogany wands, dried maple leaves, various chess pieces, sharpies, a postcard

"I think maybe she's not from around here."

"I think maybe we need to put a block of wood on the fire, you guys."

"O.k."

One of them turned the rug corner back down. Something rolled down off the carpet, landing at his feet.

"The cat was playing with it."

"*** it's cold in here."

They continued to the fireplace
