Hello everyone. I went out to my usual pitch yesterday. The weather was just amazingly beautiful here in NYC. I started around 11am and had some amazing shows - huge crowds great energy people were loving me... throwing money at me... then suddenly dead. I did about 3 great shows... then around noon... still tons of people walking by but all of sudden they seemed completely uninterested in watching magic. I couldn't get a crowd. I did a few more shows for 2 - 3 people... and would kill the show when no one else seemed interested... so frustrating!
And this seems to be a theme with me... which is why I'm posting it... I really don't get... I'm sure it's me... it happens often... any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I'm not there, so I don't know for sure, but my guess is you may be tired, bored, uninterested in what you're doing...those things transmit. I could be wrong, but it's happened to me before when I get tired. You can't let it show. You can't transmit that stuff. Put on a big smile and get enthused. Do Not change what works. Keep a notebook with you and write down what works after every show. Also, write down what doesn't work, then compare the notes. See if you can identify something. Write down what the weather is like, how you feel before each show, people response, etc... If I can help with anything let me know. My contact info is on my website www.VillageIdiotMagic.com

Describe where you were and the makeup of the passers-by.
The fall off may not have been due to your skills, but may have been attributable to other factors. You seem to have had one good hour and then nothing. Did the crowd become area workers on a limited lunch hour? They may not have had time for a show. |

Greetings MagicDaveNYC!
Welcome to 'the Sidewalk', where,..we all walk sideways. Welcome. Just a quicky here, nö solution, but my experience. The Streets are different then any other stage. And, the Shows and Performers are different then any other. (....we're the ONLY normal ones!) For some un-explained reason, I find that I have one 'good' Show, than, one 'off' Show. Can't explain it. At first, or with a 'new' number, we only hit,...HOPE FOR(!), one out of four! Really. (In all honesty, we're running at about three out of four,...'good'.) Another un-explainible funny thing, about the Streets: sometimes we really stink, but the Audience is really good! ,..they give and give and give, in every which way! Other times, we are 'brilliant', and the Audience doesn't notice. We just can't explain it. But, we accept it. We shoot for two out of three, per day. Then it's a 'good' day. Some days are 'better'. Some,... I guess 'accepting it', is the second best thing to 'understanding it'. Keep going for it. Please keep writing! Gallagher |

Over the years I've noticed a few things, one of which is the rhythm the "day" dictates.
For example, wherever I've found myself, 4:30pm (16:00) usually sucks. That is to say that it's almost universally the worst time of the day to extoll ones art. Then again, 7:00pm (19:00), is the best time. Maybe your dilemma has something to do with this anecdotal factoid? All I'd add is just be thankful for the good times and learn from the rest. Take that for what it's worth, but nothing less. |
