And while it is labeled, I would disagree that it's very clear - they try to downplay it. Kickstarter also emphasizes their model. I couldn't find any indication either way on yours, thus my question. So I appreciate the clarification. I think the site could do with it somewhere (both in the FAQ and on the campaigns, too), or I suspect other people may wonder the same thing. |

I may be assuming too much with indigogo, I've had 4 products funded on kickstarter (4 for 4 yay!) and I began studying and crowdfunding pretty hard since 2012, so perhaps I know and understand indigogo because of the depth of my involvement, I know the way it works and might assume too much when it comes to what others know. So far we hadn't done a campaign (nor did I expect to this soon) that wasn't "all or nothing", however in the video I clearly state that since I have inventory already, we'd be shipping right away. Again, I think it's a VERY GOOD idea to have a clear explaination on the site! thanks again! |

Trickstarter does have a page that explains how the crowdfunding model works and how it works on trickstarter. Here's a quote from the site:
Quote:
Essentially, supporters come along and "reserve" the product by promising to pre-pay for the item IF (and only if) the project meets it's funding goal. Now since the Creator has set a funding goal, the amount raised must MEET or exceed that goal, if it doesn't, NO ONE gets charged, and the project is unsuccessful.  Shortly after the project ENDS, the supporters (a.k.a. backers) are THEN charged for the items they pledged for. This page on the site does go into more detail, but that's just a short snippet from the page on how it works. Since I didn't expect to have any project that allowed "immediate delivery of funds" (which is where the backer is charged right away, even before knowing if the campaign is funded) I hadn't thought of putting up a description of it on that page. As stated, I did explain it in the video, but a page is definitely in order! It will be pretty rare that you'll see anything OTHER THAN "all or nothing" campaigns on trickstarter, I won't allow it unless the creator of the project can provide ample proof that they CAN deliver the goods first. The proof would have to be substantial, and we would have to feel extremely confident that the creator of the project is trustworthy. Since we're such a tight community, we will also be doing our best to look over the creator's reputation. If they're known in the magic world as someone who fails to deliver, if they have a reputation for doing knock offs etc, or anything like that, we have the right to refuse any project. We don't want to play judge and jury, but we'll exercise caution with every project. |

Yes, I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't rely on someone catch all the details in a video on the first watch - and if it's something as important as money, it should be easy to discover via other means. Thanks for clearing it up!
I also appreciate the clarity of your intentions for the future of the platform. Sounds great. As far as the "flexible" funding goes, I never really understood why it was a useful model. Perhaps with your additional experience, you could explain: how is it meaningfully different from just having a very low "all or nothing" limit - any extra funds go to the creator anyway. If you can manage with less, why bother with a high limit (that's not enforced) at all? |

Well the limit on "all or nothing" is, in my opinion, the only way to go in MOST cases. A low limit WOULD be a way to try to make sure you as the creator collect at least SOME funds, but the problem with that is you have to make sure it's AT LEAST enough to cover what you need to get the product made.
Sure someone could put a lower limit than needed just to be sure to get "something" but anyone who does that is risking not being able to produce the item, OR they might be out to just take the money and run. With any crowdfunding campaign, the backer has to look and see if the amount being raised is in fact enough to make the product. A good campaign explains why the amount is needed and how the money is going to be used. Most don't outline the exact details of every penny, but as an example: If I put up that I'm printing a bicycle deck of cards and I'm only raising $1500, then something's not right. Because you CAN'T produce a branded bike deck that cheap period. If the creator had SOME of the money already, (such as was the case with my Spectrum Deck) then they should state that so the backers can understand why the number is so low. As far as a lower limit goes, in my "tips" section on https://www.trickstarter.com I suggest setting the limit as low as possible, since anything above and beyond is going to come through anyway. Low as possible means a better chance of getting the project funded and off the ground. The only way that "flexible" funding makes sense is if the creator already has the item ready to go, or can justify what they're going to do with the funds and how they'll be able to deliver the said product. In the case of Perfect Centsâ„¢ I already had a good stockpile of inventory so I made that available to ship right away, in that case the "goal" I set was somewhat arbitrary as I was going to ship out the items no matter what. but the crowdfunding site requires SOME kind of goal. So I set what I would have wanted minimum no matter what. I could have just put $1. but that would have seemed silly. A high limit isn't usually the way creator's go, its not a good idea, you run the risk of not getting funded and it just takes longer for the project to find success, and the success of the project is important to getting people excited about it and funding it even more! well that's my two cents on it anyway! By the way we've shipped MOST of the first 50 items already! We had promised that shipping would start on Wednesday NOV 9TH, but as I was printing all the postage yesterday, the postal software kept crashing, after several attempts and a call to customer service, AND three re-installs later I had postage but the post office had already closed. Shipping went out today! WooHoo!

Above, I said we shipped MOST of the items, that would not include those who haven't answered the emails about postage.
There are still some who haven't paid the postage. I'll send out another reminder soon just to be sure. |

You may want to fix this:
"Example: if you back the $59 level and you’re in the U.S., change the Total to $53 before you go to the payment page." |

I'll send EVERYONE them at the same time. The truth is, they're already online, they've been online for a year at http://tricksite.com/lessons/ but I went to watch them yesterday and the sound won't play on a mobile device. The MUSIC plays but the dialogue DOESN'T! (no idea, something to do with sound channels. I started re-shooting this morning and should have them up by tomorrow or Saturday. |
