How many of you guys are using a TT to vanish a silk? How many people call you on it? I haven't used it in a long time but it seemed to be a lot more "well known" towards the end of me using it for that purpose. Yes I know there are a million applications for it. . Thanks. db

I went back to the egg shaped p--l, that I used in the 70's, to fool the ones in the KNOW as every child's magic kit has the TT.

It depends on how you handle it. Avoid the standard moves and it should be fine.

I use it quite a bit. I have never been called out on it. I don't just vanish the silk, I build a routine around it.
Here is a DVD that I found very useful. https://www.laflinmagicstore.com/Basic-M......bmtt.htm A very basic routine that I have used that gets a strong reaction. Best of luck Mark

Get the cheap patrick page TT DVD. it's great.
and please don't stick your thumb into the top of your fist. that's' old school. there are other ways...as hinted above. i believe the PP TT dvd goes over the Slydini vanish. dave williamson has a fantastic vanish in "williamson's wonders".

Yup! Once again, "It aint WHAT ya do, it's HOW ya do it!" Too many, do the "moves" fairly well, but, PRESENTATION?..."Here I have a little red silk. I push it into my hand, and, look, it's gone! WOW???
I use a "TT" to vanish an 18" Rice "rainbow" silk for Frank Ducrot's 20th "Century Silk"! (Only a klutz uses a change bag to vanish an 18" silk.) --Max Howard and I use the Hurling Bull subtlety, and, I "bless" Professor Herwin, every time I do it.

I use a Palmo and a ditch for 18" silks. The TT...it's hit or miss. VERY well known out there. I find it's WHO ya show magic to, and HOW you set it up. I don't just VANISH the silk. It ends up in an unlikely place...

Dick just cottoned you onto one of the best methods used for vanishing a larger than postage stamp size handkerchief. I don't use a TT. I use an FT to vanish a silk. I typically use an 18"and rarely smaller than 12". It's right out of Rice.
Interesting story: I was in Al Cohen's shop (in the late 70s) when in walks a young man who wanted a magic trick for an upcoming party. Al put a TT down on the counter saying "this should be all you need". The guy laughed and said that it wasn't any good as he had one already and it didn't do anything (note "IT" didn't do anything)! Well.. Al said that he had a killer trick that was perfect for a party and used borrowed money and asked the guy for a dollar bill. The guy forked it over, Al immediately rolled the bill around his thumb making a little cone, pulled it off and snapped his fingers. He reached into the little cone and pulled up a small bit of yellow cloth (silk) all the while talking about how money was made from cloth fibers and with a bit of skill, some luck, and a pinch of magic, you could pull the cloth fibers out. But that would make the money worthless. So he pushed the cloth back into the rolled bill and opened it up. (Note: Al did not take the silk out of the rolled bill but rather traded it up into view until it looked like he was holding a little ice-cream cone, bill rolled into the cone the bottom and a puff ball of colored silk filling the opening) I asked to see the bill and repeated the moves but pulled a bit of blue cloth (silk) up in the cone, my buddy took the bill next and pulled a bit of red cloth up, and finally Al's son, Stan, took the bill and pulled a piece of green cloth up. At the end of it all Stan gave the guy back his bill and we all acted like it was an everyday thing. We three (Stan, my friend and me) went back to talking the merits of the then new Chris Capehart three ring routine. My buddy was the only one actually carrying his own TT. I simply picked the one off the counter along with the silk. I was pretty open about it. Al's presentation was strong misdirection for me! Stan took one from under the counter while my buddy was performing. The guy begged and begged Al for the trick. Al said it was beyond his skill level and demoed a couple other tricks before letting the guy talk him into selling him the dollar bill trick. I clearly remember that AL had the guy buy a couple of other tricks first (as being within his skill level). The guy bought Color Monte, cigarette thru quarter, and Hopping Halves all based on Al demos. Al gave the guy personal instruction in all three before he gave the guy the "workings" to the silk from bill. Imagine the look on his face when Al exposed the TT!!! As young Dick Oslund is want to say: " It ain't what ya do, it's HOW ya do it!".

A Silk Poke gimmick might be a suitable alternative to a tt for you if you are really not comfortable using that venerable item...

IMHO you can't beat a Hank Ball. I use a 24" silk which is larger and methinks more visual than the smaller 12".
Just to give you an idea how it looks, first 30 seconds of this vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsk-dNAkSAM Will take some work and thought but it is my prefered way to vanish a silk by far. |

Max, is that you?
I was very impressed by that piece! You are a MASTER of the OFFbeat! Fooled ME a couple times! That's rare! You also gave me the answer to a problem I've been trying to solve. THE CIGAR! That is PERFECT! Not gonna copy that...but sure wish I'd thought of it! LOL! Doug |

Yep, that's me Doug.
Glad the Cigar solved a problem.I find it works well as while cigs are somewhat frowned upon, generally I've never had complaints with unlit (actually wooden) cigars. Especially with a bit of spagetti western music. Thanx for the tip Bill.I'll have a look at my pop-up move and see if I can get the kick better/faster. Cheers, Max |

I'm not familiar with the "Hurling Bull" subtlety. Where is it described? Is it in Darwin's TT DVDs? thanks; John

Hi John!
No! Darwin has some excellent material in his TT book, but not, this. It's about a hundred and a few years old! (hee hee) It has been sold by Rice, Abbott, Sherms, and many others. but, very few magicians use it. Max Howard and I both "love it" I will PM you. I'm sure that you will recognize it as soon as I start describing it! I learned it from the late Roy Mayer, one of my mentors, from the '40s. The original Hull routine was a bit awkward. I played with it, smoothed out some of the "wrinkles", and, have used it to vanish the 18" rainbow silk in my 20th Century Silk routine for many years. I also use it for strolling shows, without the 20C, as my finish, leaves it reset! I wrote it, AND, MY version of T. Francis Fritz's 20th Century Silks. in my book, "DICK OSLUND -- ROAD SCHOLAR".

Probably just because he was aware of its existence (maybe from his childhood magic kit). Yet, amplifying some of the comments already made, how you use the TT does matter. In particular, I avoid some of the telltale signs of using a TT. For this, I would recommend L&L's "The Secrets of Thumb tips" (from their World's Greatest Magic series). This is not a set of techniques, but ~14 routines used by some "World's Greatest Magicians" (as the copy says). Each magician in the DVD demo's a unique effect, and teaches some handling techniques that can be use for other effects. One effect, by Steve Dacri, teaches how to steal the TT that DOES NOT look like you are doing anything but gesturing (and that makes for good misdirection). Also, if you are just doing: "here's a small silk, and I stuff it in my fist, and now its gone"; anyone who is aware of TT's, will suspect one is in play. That's not to say it's not mystifying (I remember the first I saw it done, WOW, and then a few minutes later I..). Rather, create more of a routine (reread Harry's story from the past.) Enjoy; John

I do use a TT for "here is a handkerchief and now it's gone" with small children - ages 3-6 - they love it and if there are older kids around that start to say something, I turn directly to them a say, "this is for the little ones - I will perform magic for you later".
For adults, older kids, I use either a palmo or simplex to vanish a silk (generally color change) depending on the setting (size of the silks). If I want to just vanish, I have used a pull, but typically stay away from that now due to set up requirements. Hudson |
