From 2 times a day to every other day, I get advertisements pushed to me as PMs from the owner of this establishment. Nothing else, just UCE/SPAM. Not talking about incidental banners.
Is the true underlying purpose of this site to push products on the members? I've asked to be taken off the SPAM list, but that hasn't stopped the wash of adds directed at me in PMs. It's OK if it is. You can do what you want. I'm just asking straight up.

The Café was started as just what the motto says, Magicians, helping Magicians. I remember Steve talking about it when the site was just beginning.
I costs money to run the site and it provides a real service to me and many others (including yourself on some level or you wouldn't be here). I can't imagine the work it takes to run the place. There should be some remuneration. What's the big deal? Look at the ads and then leave if you are not interested. If you don't think it is worth dealing with, leave the site. You could start your own site without any ads. -Mary Mowder |

Gee, you've been a member for a little over a month and are already complaining about Café practices. This has been brought up several times and the answer is always the same. In our rules forum, you'll find this statement
Quote:
SPECIAL NOTE: Café members regularly receive announcements or special offers via private message from The Magic Café and its sponsors, or The Magic Bakery regarding magical products or events which we feel may be of interest to our magical members. When you sign up as a member of the Magic Café you agree to receiving such notices from us as part of your FREE membership. This is a small price to pay for free access to such a great resource such as The Magic Café. Besides, if the message does not interest you, delete it Steve has access to many many resources and is kind enough to pass on current information that the general membership may not be aware of. I wouldn't call a pm received daily or every other day a "wash" of adds. It takes 2 seconds to open the pm section and delete anything you don't want to read. As the rule above states, this is a small price to pay for a FREE site. There is no spam list. The pm's you are receiving are sent out to all members.

The amount of work to put a site up and keep it going is monumental. It is free and over the years I have found some very good information on it.
In my opinion, I don't think complaining about it is the proper thing to do. My Dad always said " If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything."

It always amazes me with new members here only days or weeks that start to complain about the PMs and advertisements. Did you pay anything to join here? Was there an extensive application and acceptance process you had to endure and pass?
It is the largest magic community online with worldwide participation and membership and you could join for FREE! Do you think it is free to host such a resource? There is a wealth of information here, especially including the archives, access to working pros and likeminded performers at all levels, a continual sharing of ideas in both performance and the business and operational side to our industry...and it's all free. The only thing expected is to be allowed to receive promotional messages by PM. A very small price to pay for such a valued resource and return on your investment. Not to mention many of the ads are a free notification of special offers which many members choose and want to be the first to take advantage of almost always at some kind of discounted savings - another perk to the membership here. It is these paid ads and promotional announcements that keeps the Café a free resource to the community. No dues, no monthly subscription, no billing, no levels of memberships, no upsells - nada, nothing - absolutely FREE. If not for you, don't open them or immediately hit the delete button in the bottom right corner or completely ignore and the automatically go away on their own. Plain and simple. |

You all seem all to eager to be offended. Was I complaining? I hadn't noticed:
"It's OK if it is. You can do what you want. I'm just asking straight up." Sorry to hurt your feelings with a question instead of a statement.

This thread is interesting and I think shows why everyone should think carefully (and read the rules) before posting as the moderators recommend. It's easy to offend and get offended by the written word.
The title of this topic can be read with a couple of intonations and if everyone verbally heard you say it the way you say you meant it, none would even say anything. But just reading the title, and the tone of the posting implies irritation on the part of OP, not just a simple question. I know that before I post something I read it, and then re-read it again with some edits and then preview it because it is so easy to imply something (whether you really feel that way or not; and maybe you do but don't want to come across that way). I have a colleague who says whatever comes into their mind with no filter and most of the time it's offensive. They obviously have certain feelings or those thoughts wouldn't even come into their mind, but basically they are a good person and don't mean to offend the person. (BTW I read and edited my posting 5 times before hitting submit reply) |

This same subject comes up quite often and as Dave stated - "The answer is always going to be the same". Although there is an occasional "long time member or two" who might air the same complaint, it generally is a newer forum member who just didn't read the rules they agreed to when signing up to become a member of this FREE forum. I know myself, I never read the fine print on most things either so it is understandable to an extent. The simplest solution is just to click on the message, if you have no interest in the subject (I personally could care less about new card decks looking for go fund me sponsors) and click "Delete this PM" in the bottom right corner. Then proceed to your forums of choice. That costs you less than a minute of your time. On the other hand, I have followed a couple mass PM's to a significant savings on some items I was interested in in the past. It is a free site and it does take money to run it, I would assume a good bit with all the bandwidth and storage. Steve Brooks has been very generous in keeping it active for almost 20 years now and the mods (like Dave) and our tech guru (Gene) do a lot in keeping it running smoothly. In all sincerity, welcome to the Café. Enjoy the great resources you will find here among the forums.

Steve's announcements are the purest form of supporting the mission of the Café and that is "magicians helping magicians". His PM's alert thousands of readers of new releases they wouldn't ordinarily know about. Steve's vast association with creators, dealers and wholesalers provide all of us an insight into what's available in the magic community. We don't make anything specifically from his PM's although they may direct magicians to those sites, ultimately allowing those dealers to continue their support of The MagicCafe.

Is the Steve who sends out the ads the same as this man? http://www.heknows.co.uk/episode-1-stage......ntalism/ I ask because they look so different. To contribute to the topic I like the ads they often bring to my attention things I knew nothing about. I havn't yet bought anything I've seen but I'm sure I will in the future. I hope it helps to support the Café?

I think they are pretty clear and you don't even need to open them if you don't want to. AND ... they vanish after a certain number of days so won't block up your PM box. Even if the MC gets a fee for PMs advertising decks etc etc...... that's fine by me. It's in the rules I signed up for. If I was feeling pedantic I might say the wording should be changed to "will regularly send" rather than occasionally..... but it's not a big deal .... and not as bad as other sites and nowhere near as many as Pinterest for example. |

Bla bla bla.
Let's say that the true underlying purpose of this site to push products on the members. Let's also say that this is the reason I'm here, and I'm cool with it. Folks, it's not about the rules. It's about choice. Nobody has to be here. If you don't like McDonald's, go eat at Burger King. This is the Magic Café. It is what it is. (It amuses me that someone might go to Disneyland and find out that all the shops sell Disney merchandise. They might ask, "is the underlying purpose of this park to push products on the visitors?") |
