Wow! Thanks, nice article!
I quote myself from my own post of exactly last year: Quote:
On Nov 19, 2016, MarcoLostSomething wrote: Now, I was joking at the time but it's something interesting. Iodine-125 has a half life of 60 days, that means that after some months (about 4 or 5) the quantity of radioactive nuclei should be negligible. What I find difficult or weird is to reveal those gamma rays. Among all detectors you have to rely on solid-state detectors, mainly Silicon or Germanium. They are very direction-dependent so that you can estimate where the source is. Counters like Geigers can be used, but they might pick ambiental radioactivity or muon decays that can simulate a signal, since they don't store information about energy, but only on numbers of particles detected. That's a rough guess of a plausible system using radioactive material as a marker. |

I am skeptical of usefullness of such a system. Perhaps in casinos it could be applied to bypass the cameras (since luminous readers can be seen by them). And I'm not sure about that, I might be just ignorant of what those cameras can do. Otherwise it's a gimmick. If you want high tech RFID seems to be the way to go and if you want just a marking system for a game w/o surveilance then solutions such as sandpaper or juice are adequate enough imo. But again with my limited knowlegdge on the topic I might be wrong.

I am skeptical too, because high energy particles are hard to detect with precision in the lab, imagine a card room condition...
But still, fun to get the brain working. |

From the "nothing new under the sun" category.
Forte wrote about this in Casino Game Protection on p. 493. That was published almost 15 years ago. Jason

And Del Ray was familiar with this concept in the early 1960's. See the Cervon Castle Notebooks.

I know that some professional hustlers where looking into this in the mid-sixties. They enlisted an engineer/scientist from Bechtel Corporation who felt he could design such a system for use against the dealing shoes, not in hand held games. The reason being of course the shoes were stationary.
It is my understanding they did not pursue it further as they were concerned with the possible negative health implications of handling radioactive cards for a period of time.Further, there were much better preparations for cards that were less tech oriented and much more practical in play. Even against the cameras, one really does not need esoteric work or methods to get the money. The will-of-the-wisp stuff is mostly for academic discussion. Sometimes simpler methods work much better and will last longer than the more "intriguing" methods. |

@splice: Yes, CGP is 15 years old. Gee...I hope Forte has not joined the "nothing new under the sun" crowd and therefore writes no more.

Well, he could always publish the other 40% of CGP that was cut out from the original 1000 page draft.

Out of interest, why was that 40% cut?
Was it simply due to size restrictions? |

I already read about it in a book called the Dealing with Cheats decades ago (before the Forte book)....I still have a copy of Dealing with Cheats (I think it was published in 1973) !
You have to be crazy to work with any radioactive materials...I would not risk it.

ExpertMagician,
I have Dealing With Cheats and I looked through it quickly but couldn't find a reference to radioactive marking systems. Maybe I just missed it. Do you remember what section of the book it's in? You are right about the publication date: 1973. I tracked down A.D. Livingston about 8 years ago and sent him my first edition to autograph for me. He told me it was the first copy he'd ever signed. He passed away a few years ago. Jason

I've always felt that Livingston did an excellent piece of work when he wrote Dealing With Cheats.
It's a book that continues to stand up today, and should be in the library of anybody with any sort of interest in this topic. Widely available used, usually for a low price, and very well worth seeking out.

I think the radioactive substance (cobalt-60) is only mentioned in the dice section as a mean of controlling rolls, but basically it was a hoax.

My error ... It was on page 147-148 in Secrets of the Card Sharps by Gerard Majax (Copyright 1977).
I paid $5.99 for my copy...the price sticker is still inside But, that was in the 1970s Jason, I may be Vegas the first week of April....If I have time, I'll look you up then.
