Lately I see a lot of performers telling me what they are actually going to do. I.E. "I'm actually going to put this card on the table" or... "I'm actually going to ask you to sign this card". Actually is better used in situations where the proposed action is out of the ordinary , like, "I'm actually going to ask you to sign my forehead".

I'm also seeing a lot of artificial stammers from performers acting as though they had no idea they were going to ask a spectator to hold a card in between their hands or ask another person to pick a card. I know the intent is to make it seem off the cuff but it is mostly coming off as unprepared and scattered (and annoying).

These mannerisms seem like the new "Now I'm going to take a do...".

I am only mentioning this because there is a certain sameness creeping into some of the performances I'm seeing on TV, as though they are all subtly channeling the same model . Those who wish to set themselves apart might wish to avoid these ways.

I meant now I'm going to take AND do... this that or the other. Sorry about the typo. LOL

Basically a description of every move, even the obvious visible ones, without framing the meaning. I' prefer "we'll mix it in the deck" because it gives a context of some sort over a description of actions or just doing it because it is clear that you are mixing it in the deck.

Magicians referring to themselves as "impressive." Magicians saying, "I know, right?"

This is one of the downfalls of videos.
Like Eugene used to say, "monkey see, monkey Do."

I've done it myself.

I started to get a French accent watching Tabary's Rope video. LOL

At one time Slydini's accent and mannerisms seemed a little prevalent.

The result of just winging it on the presentation. "What I want you to do is, I want you to take a card." Ouch. How about "Please take a card."

Great post Mary..I agree with the "actually" statement..My peeve is. The going through every incident/movement, before the big reveal, is so unnecessary. I took a brand new deck out of a box..You looked at it to make sure it is genuine. You then chose a card, at complete free will, while I had my head buried, in the concrete here, so I could not see your choice. You then inserted it, freely back into the deck, while my head was STILL buried in the concrete. I then had a 6 man crew, jack hammer my head out of the concrete. While at no time, did I look at the deck. We have never met before, have we...Ta Da! your card is the six of spades

These kinds of verbal affectations are found among performers and non performers alike. Words like actually, basically, really, are over used as transition words for every new sentence. Very annoying. "you know what I mean? "

Nearly as annoying as my pet gripe (with many UK performers - including some 'names') - the overuse of the word 'excellent'. Even more annoying when it's drawn out!

"Please take a card......that's exxxxxxcellent".

"Sign your name........exxxxxxcellent".

"Now put it back.......that's exxxxxxcellent".

“Here I have a plane old ordinary deck of cards...”
While we’re at it..
I hate when I watch a card trick where a big deal is made showing selected card placed/lost in the middle of deck and is immidiately fallowed by a blatant double undercut.
I cringe every time I see it.
Why not just put the card on top of the deck then do the double undercut? doesn't that give a meaning to and a reason for suddenly and abrubtly ‘messing’ with the deck
after carefully replacing the selection?
