I had a cold/flu and coughed intensely for a long time, and suddenly I could not talk anymore. It felt like I coughed my vocal cords to pieces.
Anyhow, it's now the 23d day and I have not regained my voice. I CAN talk, with a very strained voice, but if I talk just a little, after several days of silence, I destroy the voice that I have regained. As a magician/mentalist/cold reader, it's not a very good situation being unable to talk. So, do you have any suggestions of how to regain my voice? I'm feeling kind of desperate... |

Have you seen a doctor? Presumably this should heal and recover although I understand your concern after 23 days.
My advice would be to talk as little as possible and drink hot water with honey. |

If you haven't seen a doctor yet, you should of course.
It sounds like you've done physical damage. Other than that I've used fresh raw pineapple juice to cure/soothe a sore throat. It contains bromelain which has been shown to reduce inflammation. It must be the juice of an actual ripe pineapple. Nothing from a can or bottle, or processed in any way. Raw, unfiltered honey is also good. I'm either event they can't hurt. I'm not a doctor of course, but if your cold/flu had been gone for a while, and your voice hasn't returned you probably need medical intervention. Coughing is much more violent and potentially damaging than people realize. Good luck man.

See a doctor.
And don't seek medical advice online. While I am sure the advice you receive when asking random people about medical problems will be with the best of intentions, there's a lot of unqualified people who are willing to give medical advice that is completely devoid of any science, based entirely on wives tales and anecdotal evidence.

Would you seriously take medical advice from someone with this title? I chose it for multiple reasons.

Which is why I'm extra careful not to give medical advice beyond, "See a doctor."

Agreed, as I said.
I just pointed out things that can't hurt, and might help.

Of course, I'll reiterate "see a doctor." I was in a similar spot...saw my doctor...who diagnosed me with laryngitis. I got some medication and had to rest my voice to wait it out. I had one show that I could not reschedule or cancel, so I made up a series of cue cards in the style of the silent movies. I got some ragtime music for the background and did a silent show with some minimalistic patter on these cards, which were held up by an easel. I would just change the cards as appropriate. It was a hit.

Hey Rook. You might need to find a talking partner just in case Penn and Teller retire soon. Mikael see a doctor. From a quick search online, some complications of laryngitis include pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, and vocal cord paralysis.

Today, for the first time, my voice feels like it's about to heal. I'm very happy
Thank you for all the advice. |

Thank goodness you didn't bother with seeing a medical professional.
I mean it is not as if something can be wrong that can permanently damage your vocal chords or anything like that. If you feel better I'm sure that is all that matters and no damage could have happened that will have lasting repercussions. After all it is only your voice. You have a spare.

I was going to stay out of it, because I did not need to simply echo what others were saying. Now that you are feeling better.... Please, go see your doctor. Be honest as to the symptoms, duration and limitations. Be honest with yourself and the doc, as to how you are feeling now. I hope the problem never happens to your voice again. If it was caused by a virus, it may never. If it was caused by you straining, or doing something uncomfortable with your vocal chords, it might. This is why you should see a doctor, because you don't know. If it happens again, it could hit worse or permanently. There are throat doctors who specialize in exercises to help people use their voices properly. If you absolutely will not go to a doctor over this, then at least mention it in detail at your next annual physical. I am sorry to come off as high handed here, but I honestly don't want to see you suffer damage.

They asked why I had returned... They said: "It can take two more weeks until it returns. Don't worry" They thought it was a virus. So you see, I didn't feel I got that much help from your medical professionals. I felt they didn't take my problem seriously. But I'm glad it turned out that I took you advice. I'm not sure for what though... |
