My medical professionals? Sorry you didn't go to one I would recommend or they would have known what was happening.

Also don't you think that is something to tell us?

Vocal chords are muscles. They have to be taken care of. If you damage them so badly, no matter how, that you can't talk for a month you need to be at a specialist to see if you have done damage that is lasting.

Yes, maybe US medical professionals are more skillful than swedish...

I didn't tell I had seen a doctor for two reasons:

1. I was extremly stressed because of the situation.

2. I thought it was obvious I had seen a doctor. We are not stupid in Sweden, you know...

The swedish health care system works differently than your system. Here in Sweden we can't just decide ourselves to see a specialist. We have to do what we are allowed to do. The first doctor have to sign an order for the specialist to call me to a meeting. If the doctor thinks that I don't need to see a specialist, I don't get to see one. In Sweden we have to fight to get help.

Interesting. And Sweden's health care is mainly gov't funded. Therefore socialized medicine which is what some here think is the way to go. So coming from someone who lives it states "In Sweden we have to fight to get help".

@RNK you can see a specialist straight away if you pay for it or have insurance. The requirement for a doctor to sign off on a specialist referral is to make sure only patients with genuine need see specialists.

I am speaking about the UK context not Sweden but I understand the systems are similar.

Maybe Mikael can chime in, it sounds as if he does have insurance and that he cannot see a specialist without a referral from a doctor first and get it paid for by his insurance.

I believe you are saying the same thing, "The requirement for a doctor to sign off on a specialist referral is to make sure only patients with genuine need see specialists. " You need a signature from a doctor before you can go see a specialist for your insurance to cover it.

Mikael can comment better than me but I am under the impression that Sweden, like most of Europe, have a universal system not mobased on insurance.

Insurance being optional and providing coverage for private sector care.

I know this sounds very strange to our Americans cousins but I can't imagine it any other way. Certainly can't ever see me having to pay for medical treatment.

So, you do have to have a doctors signature to go see a specialist for it to be covered?

I would rather pay so I can go see any type of doctor whenever I want and have it covered.

Its not a case of it being covered. There is no coverage as such.

If you are I'll you see your doctor and if s/he believes that the issue requires a specialist you get referred and treated for free.

If you are wealthy and don't want to see your doctor first then you self refer to.l a private hospital.

Anyhow I appreciate this is a cultural difference, like gun control etc. Europeans see things differently to Americans but I didn't meant to start a political debate.

I hope Mikael's voice is better soon.

Yes, that would be the rational choice if you were part of the wealthy 1% class who could afford that luxury. For the rest of us, the choice to have medical care when we need it without regard to cost is much more rational, rather than not being able to get any care.

BTW, having a primary care doctor sign off before seeing a specialist is not different from many many HMOs here in the US. I used to be covered by such a plan.

Let's not make this about political bs please.

Nobody said the Swedish were stupid. I never thought or implied it.

You can get private health insurances here too. So far, the only persons I have met who have them are wealthy persons. I am not wealthy. Yet.

I hope this clears things up.

I appreiciate all your help.

Dannydoyle I think I remember you having an avatar here many years ago. What happened?

Hi Mikael,

Hope your voice is getting better.

Since you didn't feel like your doctor was taking your situation seriously, would you have been able to ask for another opinion? I know I and family members have also been in situations where we didn't feel like the doctor was giving us the best advice and we've gone to see a different doctor and gotten much better care. I know that if I had lost my voice for as long as you had, I would be very extremely worried.

As an aside, I hope to visit Sweden one day as I have a number of relatives there. In fact, at one time my great uncle was the oldest living man in Sweden! Magic Live has also show cased a lot of great magic from Sweden which has only increased my enthusiasm to visit.

Interesting! How old was your great uncle?

Where do your relatives live? It might not be possible, but fun, if we could meet Smile

He's number 4 on the list of supercentenarians. Anders Engberg. (The top 3 are all women.)

Lived in Halland county, so I'm guessing that's where a lot of relatives live although I don't keep in touch with any unfortunately.
